The home team’s fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when Dennis Oli, the Gillingham midfield player, scuffed home what proved to be the winning goal 15 minutes from time. Until then, the home team had dominated, with Mark McCammon, Simeon Jackson and Garry Richards having efforts saved on the line. The second half brought further chances and Accrington Stanley had Kenny Arthur, their goalkeeper, to thank for keeping them in the match with a string of fine saves. But the pressure eventually told and Oli was able to sweep home from a cross by Charlie Daniels for the club’s first goal at home this season.
“I’d been working hard and thought the goal was never going to come, but luckily it did and I kept my composure to put it over the line,” Oli said. “Now I’m off the mark, it will give me confidence going into the next game. I know there will be other chances, I just need to take them.”
Oli’s strike proved difficult for Arthur to take. “We were disappointed not to get anything out of the game,” he said. “We worked hard, but we were playing a team who last year were a league above us.”
