Accrington Stanley 3 Bournemouth 0
Attendance 1,152
Paul Mullin, Terry Gornell and Rostyn Griffiths were on the mark as Accrington Stanley registered their first win in five games. “Our finishing was outstanding, which is rare for us as we usually squander chances and get punished,” John Coleman, their manager, said. Jimmy Quinn, his Bournemouth counterpart, sympathised with the travelling fans who voiced their disapproval when the final whistle came. “They had every right to be fed up,” he said.
Aldershot 1 Exeter City 0
Attendance 3,784
Exeter City failed to bounce back from the FA Cup defeat by Curzon Ashton last week, falling to John Grant’s goal in the 53rd minute after Steve Tully’s mistake. Grant later had a penalty saved by Paul Jones before Danny Hylton was sent off for the home side with two minutes left.
Paul Tisdale, the Exeter manager, said: “I’ll make sure we learn from this game.” Gary Waddock, the Aldershot Town manager, said: “It was a good three points.”
Barnet 0 Notts County 4
Attendance 1,934
Jonathan Forte scored a first-half hat-trick on his debut for Notts County after joining on loan from Scunthorpe United last week. Ian McParland, the County manager, said: “Jonathan has bags of pace and I knew if we could get the ball in the box he would score goals.” Barnet are now without a win in their past five League games and Paul Fairclough, the manager, admitted: “Some of the defending out there was just calamitous.”
Bury 0 Grimsby Town 2
Attendance 2,549
Grimsby Town picked up their first league win of the season, despite having Jean-Paul Kalala, the midfield player on loan from Oldham Athletic, sent off in the 36th minute. Liam Trotter and Nathan Jarman scored the goals. Mike Newell, their manager, said: “The club’s been on a horrible run since March and it’s strange you end it with ten men.” Alan Knill, the Bury manager, said: “We can’t seem to find the net in one box and are giving goals away in the other.”
Chester City 1 Morecambe 2
Attendance 1,647
Morecambe denied Mark Wright a first win on his return as Chester City manager in a game that finished with both teams down to ten men after the dismissals of Kevin Ellison, of Chester, and Danny Adams. After watching his side just fail to retrieve a two-goal deficit, Wright said: “The bottom line is that changes will have to be made. Sammy McIlroy, the Morecambe manager, said: “We showed a lot of courage and a tremendous will to win.”
Gillingham 4 Rotherham United 0
Attendance 5,304
Four different players got on the scoresheet for Gillingham in a comfortable win over a side weakened when Danny Harrison was sent off after 34 minutes. “It was a great performance against a good side,” Mark Stimson, the manager, said. “I prefer to see my players share the goals.” Mark Robins, the Rotherham manager, was angered by Harrison’s dismissal and accused Barry Fuller, the Gillingham midfield player, of play-acting.
Luton Town 2 Dagenham & Redbridge 1
Attendance 5,402
First-half goals from Sol Davis and Paul McVeigh, either side of Magnus Okuonghae’s 33rd-minute equaliser, were enough to move Luton Town to minus 11 points at the foot of the table and Mick Harford, the Luton manager, praised his players’ work rate: “It was a must-win game in terms of our results at home and our situation,” he said. Dagenham have just one win in eight games but Terry Harris, the assistant manager, said: “Luton are a good side.”
Port Vale Brentford
Attendance 6,058
Ian Brightwell, the Port Vale assistant manager, pointed an accusing finger at Andy Haines, the referee, for sending off Ross Davidson after he had challenged Karleigh Osborne for a loose ball in the 37th minute. “It was a rubbish decision,” Brightwell said. “It should have been a yellow card at worst.” Goals from Osbourne, Marcus Bean and Charlie MacDonald secured Brentford’s win and Andy Scott, their manager, said: “It could have been four or five in the end.”
Rochdale 1 Macclesfield Town 1
Attendance 3,013
Nat Brown’s 80th-minute header to cancel out Adam Rundle’s close-range effort was no more than Macclesfield Town deserved. Brown is on a month’s loan from Wrexham and Keith Alexander, the manager, said: “Nat is a player who can get into the box and score you a goal. I think he’s been excellent since he came.” After Brown had denied Rochdale a fifth successive league win, Keith Hill, the manager, said: “Perhaps we were in the comfort zone.”
Wycombe Wanderers 1 Bradford City 0
Attendance 5,002
Angelo Balanta, 18, who is on loan from Queens Park Rangers, created the chance for Lewis Hunt to score the second-half goal that maintained Wycombe Wanderers’ unbeaten league run. Peter Taylor, their manager, said: “Angelo is an excellent player. His awareness is different class and I really respect QPR for loaning him out.” Stuart McCall, the Bradford City manager, said: “We saw why Wycombe have only conceded six goals all season.”
