The problems are from the top down, and the problems are the players, the FA and the youth coaches. The FA have to shoulder a lot of the blame. Sure, Wembley is impressive, but that money could have been spent on youth development. We need to select the best team, not the 11 best individuals.

The rot starts from the top — which is the FA. English football is swimming in money, so how come the last English coach to win the title was Howard Wilkinson? Where is the English state-of-the-art coaching centre? Unless there are good English coaches — at all levels, but above all at the top level — good English players won’t come through.

Our players aren’t good enough. The likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Cole are surrounded by better foreign players week in, week out. The likes of Arsenal and Man Utd would destroy this England side.
