Louis van Gaal, the former Holland coach, is interested in becoming the next England manager.
The AZ Alkmaar coach said he would trigger a clause in his contract that would allows him to leave to take charge of an international side.
Van Gaal was offered the England job before but admits the former Barcelona and Ajax coach admitted his chances now are slim.“I was asked a few years ago [to take charge of England] but then I said no," he said.
“Maybe they [the Football Association] will call me again now but I understand they have other things on their minds, like digesting the fact they have not qualified for the finals of Euro 2008.
“I know the chance of becoming England coach isn’t that big. There are many candidates but I am willing to do it, otherwise I would not have a clause in my contract.”
Meanwhile Sol Campbell, the England defender, believes Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp could make a go of coaching the national team.
Despite guiding his side to sixth place, making him the highest-placed British coach in the Barclays Premier League, Redknapp maintains he “hasn’t got a prayer” of landing the role.
Campbell - who played in the defeat to Croatia last week - firmly believes he could make the step up to international management.
“Harry is a top manager and has done a great job at Portsmouth,” the 33-year-old former Arsenal said. “I am sure he would entertain it, but the FA have got to approach him and see what happens.”
