Magistrates in Rome have confirmed that Fabio Capello, the England manager, and the former Juventus director, AC Milan and AS Roma manager Antonio Giraudo are being investigated for allegedly giving false testimony in an Italian football corruption trial.
The perjury investigation follows testimony given by Mr Capello and Mr Giraudo in March at a trial involving the Gea World football agency, run by Alessandro Moggi, the son of Luciano Moggi, the former Juventus general manager and the key figure in Italy's 2006 match-fixing scandal.
The prosecutor at the March hearing, Luca Palamara, said at the time that he intended to take legal action against Mr Capello and Mr Giraudo because they had said "once too often" on oath that they "did not remember" key details of the scandal.
Mr Capello told the March hearing "I never knew of pressure on players or cases related to contracts with players. At Roma, and then at Juventus when I was coach, I was only involved in coaching decisions".
Pierfilippo Capello, the son and manager of Fabio, said: "We haven't heard or been informed of anything, but that's normal. There is nothing new from when we first heard about this two months ago. We'll take action and offer an explanation when it is necessary."
Mr Capello, who has also managed Real Madrid and AS Roma, was manager of Juventus from 2004-2006. In the trial six men are accused of putting pressure on players to sign agreements with Gea World, thus gaining an illegal hold over the Serie A transfer market.
An FA spokesman said: "It remains a private matter and we have no further comment to make."
Mr Capello is already under investigation for suspected tax evasion in a separate case in Turin, where prosecutors accuse him of evading 16 million Euros in taxes by using a Luxembourg-based merchandising company and family trusts based in the Channel Islands.
