Fabio Capello, the England manager, is leaning towards giving John Terry a badly-needed lift after his Champions League final trauma by naming him as captain for the friendly against the United States on Wednesday. Capello is concerned that Terry is still suffering a crisis of confidence after the penalty miss that cost Chelsea the biggest prize in European club football.
Terry took Chelsea’s fifth penalty against Manchester United in Moscow and, had he scored, would have lifted the cup as captain. His miss sent the shoot-out into sudden death and Chelsea lost when the fourteenth kick of the night, taken by Nicolas Anelka, was saved by Edwin van der Sar, the United goalkeeper. The Chelsea captain was inconsolable after the game and would not even meet his father, who had travelled to Moscow, at the team hotel later, heading straight for the isolation of his room. He later issued an apology to his teammates, club officials and fans, blaming himself for the defeat.
Capello is aware that Terry was hurt to be overlooked in Paris, when Rio Ferdinand was made captain against France. He was missing with injury when England faced Switzerland in February, and Steven Gerrard was given the armband.
Graham Taylor, in an interview with The Times today, has criticised Capello’s policy of rotating the captaincy. “From John Terry’s point of view, there must be an element of uncertainty,” Taylor said. “If you’ve been the captain, you’d understand him wanting to ask, ‘Can you tell me why you’re not retaining me?’ ” In Paris, Terry was shocked that Capello announced Ferdinand’s captaincy in a curt sentence, without any advance warning. He thought that as the captain under Steve McClaren, the previous manager, he might have been alerted to Capello’s intentions.
Yet Capello has since made it plain that he did not intend to upset Terry or teach him a lesson. His brevity was more because of his loose command of English, which precluded a longer discussion about his intentions.
He is aware, though, that to keep Terry waiting much longer could cause more anguish at a time when his confidence is low. No firm decision has been made, and Capello does not intend to make an announcement until tomorrow, but it would appear that the thought of attempting to lift the gloom around Terry is appealing. Capello has said that he will make a final decision on the job before the World Cup qualifying campaign next season but Terry will welcome the opportunity to demonstrate his worthiness after what must surely be the lowest week of his career.

Oh yeah he did a brilliant job leading us to Euro 2008...
Chris, Brighton,
i think everyone tends to forget how tough it is to play in these finals. When David Beckham lost in the World Cup he cried. Terry deserves the armband. He has been a great leader for Chelsea and is one of the main reasons Chelsea got that far. He can do a brilliant job for England too
hillarie, london,
Trouble is that Terry is not captain material. Maybe forcing him to act a bit more grown up is what he needs, rather than reward for his yobbish behaviour. The other lad, Gerrard, looks a far safer bet.
Jock Stein, Dunfermline, Scotland
There's only one obvious choice for England captain: Wayne Rooney.
Arthur Durbano, Springfield, USA/Pennsylvania
JT is a brilliant leader..............oh how quickly we have forgotten Rio's drugs indiscresions and him kicking a lady steward. Is that a role model? Of course not
Davie P, London,
Give Terry the captaincy cos he's sad. Give Beckham his 100th cap, cos sure doesn't he have 99. Give me a break.
Barrie, I agree - Terry is no Lee Bowyer. But he doesn't deserve the captaincy over Ferdinand, Gerrard or Owen - all of whom are better candidates.
Claire, Dublin,
Once again, people brand John Terry as a thug. Several years ago, Terry was arrested after a fracas outside a nightclub. The courts absolved him of all blame. Since then his behaviour has been exemplary, his captaincy inspirational.
Please explain why you think this fine young man a thug.
Barrie Collins, Long Sault. Ontario, Canada
Terry's miss underlined exactly why he should not be England captain. We need someone who thrives on pressure, not someone who crumbles underneath it. Compare his lacklustre shot with Frank Lampard's two penalties, one taken under incredibly difficult personal circumstances.
Steve Johnson, London, UK
The England captaincy is not meant to be a pick me up for someone who has missed a penalty. I don't know why there is any sympathy for Terry after all it was his behaviour that instigated the trouble on the pitch last Wedneday that led to Drogba hitting Vidic and being sent off.
Lorraine, Oxford,
Needlessly start the hand bags that gets Drogba red carded, miss a penalty that wins the Champions League, cry like a baby, send a letter, instead of appearing in person, to explain your feelings! Become Captain of England. Yes, it sounds like Terry earned the right to be Captain of England!!!!!
Simon, London,
So Ferdinand looses out because Terry missed a penalty. Maybe Joey Barton will be called up to the squad once he comes out of prison, after all its only fair he gets the chance to rebuild some confidence as well. And why wasn't Darius Vassell made captain...
Chris, Brighton,
No need to look any farther than this sugestion as to why England can't be a serious competitor at the international level. Think a pro athlete who bottled a chance to win the biggest club competition in his sport would be considered for captaincy of his national team in the US, India, Italy? No way
ms, London,
Gerrard really should be the one, but sadly he remains more a doer rather than a leader / organizer. Terry's clearly unsuitable both as a thug and as scarcely better than any sarf London oik when interviewed on TV. Rio speaks coherently, organizes, and seems to have learnt to behave.
john in dulwich, s london,
You simply can't have a charmless, arrogant thug like John Terry as England captain. Go on, Capello, give him the armband and I'll bet you any money you like he'll have to be stripped of it by the time of the next World Cup.
jonathan anthony, london,
Terry's maturity is such that he would be last choice as captain for an under-10 side. In a footballing world of oversized egos his must be the biggest. It was so appropriate that he missed the match-winning penalty.
Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
Anyone but Terry. Much as the nation is delighted that tearful Mr Chelsea is so in touch with his feelings, the captaincy isn't for rehabilitating yobs, no matter how much they cry that they've let down their team mates and rich benefactor.
john in dulwich, s london,
aaaah, poor John Terry, so upset he locked himself in his room. Is he for real?? These are the actions of an 8 year old girl, a particularly whiney one at that. What sort of captain puts his own petulant feelings before those of his teammates?
Tom, Chelmsford,
What a Joke! Capello will lose all respect if he gives Terry the armband. Afetr his antics in Moscow he is no role model.
For me Capello is wandering around in the dark, trying to please everyone, where is this tough streak we were promised?
Graham, Worcester, UK
I agree with Dean.
A cap should come by merit, and merit alone. Same goes for captaincy. I think people would look down on him if he had to be given captaincy to cheer him up. He's big enough to deal with it.
Plus, with his behaviour on the night, I don't think he deserves to be captain.
Bertrand Lee, Singapore, Mauritius
If Capello does this it will be an absolute joke. This man needs knocking down a peg or two, not bigging up!
Rio is the man for the job. More dignified and a good role model for the kids who look up to these men.
Geoff, London, England
I disagree with the idea that Terry should be given the armband as a kind of pick-me-up. There is no sentiment football and if psychologically he is in the wrong frame of mind Capello shouldnt start him. Capello should continue with his strategy of picking captains for the RIGHT reasons.....
Dean, Manchester,
