Fabio Capello wants to speak to Wayne Rooney in an effort to eradicate the striker’s habit of making reckless challenges and reinforce how ill-discipline could jeopardise England’s World Cup hopes.
Rooney was fortunate to avoid being sent off in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over the United States at Wembley. He was booked for a late tackle on Frankie Hejduk after escaping sanction for an even more dangerous challenge on Ricardo Clark.
Rooney’s rashness cost England once before when the 22-year-old Manchester United player was sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho during the World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal two years ago. He was also substituted for his own good by Sven-Göran Eriksson in a friendly defeat by Spain two years earlier. Capello concedes that Rooney’s discipline remains a cause for concern.
The England manager’s comments came amid fresh criticism of Rooney’s behaviour towards Kyros Vassaras at Wembley on Wednesday after he was spotted by television cameras mouthing obscenities at the Greek referee.
Steve Chittenden, an organiser of the Grass Roots Football Live show that starts in Birmingham today, said yesterday that the FA’s Respect campaign had to be seen to be starting at the top. “I understand he’s a fantastic player who lives on the edge but he’s still got a responsibility to teach our young players how to behave. He knows it’s all going out live on TV,” he said. Only last month Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney’s club manager, said that the lack of respect shown to referees was “ridiculous”.
On the topic of Rooney’s sometimes rash tackling, Capello revealed that he displays the same reckless streak in training and that he is occasionally worried about the safety of his team-mates. “I have to keep him on the pitch for 90 minutes and so I have to speak with him,” Capello said. “I have to explain to him that he mustn’t do these tackles. The next time I see him I will talk to him. I saw the same thing from him in training. On Tuesday, in the last session, it was the same. It is normal for him and I told him that. I was worried for the other players, but I like that desire. Great players have good quality, but they also run hard and do not fear making a tackle.”
Rooney was singled out for special attention by Capello in the build-up to the match against the US, being taken aside on three occasions and instructed to play with greater discipline rather than charge around the pitch as he does for United, although the message has yet to get through. Capello admires Rooney’s commitment and workrate, but fears that it is not properly directed and will tell him as much when the squad gather for England’s friendly against the Czech Republic at Wembley on August 20, as Rooney is being rested for the game against Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday. “He is young and he is a good player,” Capello said. “In the future he will be better, but it is something I have to speak to him about.
“You cannot play without commitment and when you need to play with that commitment, you tackle very hard. He did very, very hard tackles, both possible yellow cards, but neither of them worthy of a red card. I think it is a normal game for him.”
After picking what he considers to be his first-choice available side for his first three matches, Capello is planning to field a more experimental line-up against Trinidad & Tobago, with seven Chelsea and Manchester United players being left at home. Glen Johnson will start at right back in place of Wes Brown, Phil Jagielka is likely to be given his debut alongside Rio Ferdinand at centre back and Joe Hart could also win his first cap in goal.
“I prefer to have two or three players [to choose from] in every position on the pitch,” Capello said. “I choose depending on the game, depending on the moment. After three games I have tried to choose different options. I have another possibility in the next game. After that, when we play the last friendly, I think my knowledge will be better.”

"i Said years ago that he should never wear the three lions again and i say so now".
That's so funny - as if playing soccer for England should be something you'd be proud of!
Jack, Beijing, China
Fifa ought to consider an automatic red card for ref abuse and then enforce it. There is no other team sport where refs get so much abuse as football. Rugby, icehockey, cricket - nobody dares to go near the ref because they know they will be punished straight away.
Fred Caprivi, Manchester,
i think it all boils down to the fustration of not being as good at scoring as he once was. Schoolyard football, schoolboy mentality
tim, leeds, uk
Maybe Gazza can be brought in to provide him some with a few tips?
Perry Stalsis, Toronto, Canada
Too long he has played the bad boy image. He is now 23 and must be more responsible. Else, he will join Britney and Lohan as another Teen-gone-Bad. Surely, Capello will see to that.
Raaja, Chennai, India
He pushes it too the limit and has got sent off for england in crucial matches. In the game on wednesday we got a close-up of a foul mouthed tirade at the ref after he booked him. You didn't need to be a lip-reader. Rooney, Terry, Cole and Ferdinand. Not a pleasant grouping...
mortice, london,
I fear we will lose Rooney permanently. He is a great player. However, it didnt take a lip-reader to know what he said to the referee on Weds. If he cannot stop this he should be dropped in the interest of all those children who witnessed his rage, and who are influenced by such celebrities.
Anthony Hollis, Camberley, Surrey
You all are lucky your football players only curse the referees. Here in the U.S. our (American) "football" players are normally in jail due to drugs, fights, shootings etc. Its interesting how the famous fall no matter where they are at.
The wonders of America. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Adam, Cincinnati, OH, USA
Rooney cannot perform for England. His strike rate is abysmal. Play someone who can score! He believes he has a god-given right to not be substituted, as we saw on Wednesday. ManU diehards may love him, but if they had relied on him they wouldn't have won anything this season. Undeserved arrogance!

How much does gold cost?
dewsbry, london, uk
What? Both possible yellow cards but in total no red card? It's about time refs grow a pair and deal with Rooney in a proper way. Too often he gets frustrated at losing the ball, then makes a horrible tackle, gets a yellow and then argues with the ref. Should get sent off but never does...
_edu, Zagreb,
If Wayne Rooney were a less talented player with Clogbury Town he would have been banned from football by now.
Frank Upton, Solihull,
Unless Rooney starts to listen and grow up the aggression will eventually lead to a mis-timed tackle which will result in him seriously injuring himself a la Paul Gasgoine.
Mike, Liverpool, UK
Rooney reminds me of the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz:
"If I only had a brain".
Connor, Thorpe, UK
Rooney mouthing off at the referee on Wednesday night wan't the worst thing in the world...the ref was frankly awful.
NM, London,
i Don't believe that Wayne Rooney will ever sort out that part of his game that is unacceptable. i Said years ago that he should never wear the three lions again and i say so now. His fouls, his behavior when substituted and especially his attitude to referees should not be tolerated.
Larry Norris, East London, South Africa
how about telling him to improve his shooting and if Cap thinks Roon can really play 2nd striker his passing. He missed what 5 chance to play his partner in? There were 30 competitive ints and CL games without a goal to convince SAF he cannot play 2nd striker why did Cap think he can?
jon, feltham, middx
I'm quite impressed with Capello.
I like the idea of a bit more discipline.
Swearing at referees and stupid tackles are examples of uncontrolled agression. That agression needs to be chanelled into winning the game, not getting yourself sent off.
John Tuohy, Whitchurch Hill, oxon
Why is it always Rooney who gets singled out for swearing at the ref? All English players do it, and most others too, yet you never read articles on people wanting them to stop, telling them kids see it on TV.
Tone, Manchester,
What, do you mean Ferguson's never tried to 'rein him in'?
Stuart, Manchester, England
Rio's "alleged drug abuse" dates back several years, and he has done enough since to show he is a model professional footballer. He has barely put a foot wrong for 2 seasons during which he has won 2 league titles and a European cup.
"JT" is neither a better player nor a better role model.
Robert Elms, Norfolk, UK
Absolutely right . Discipline has always been an issue with wunderkinds and others. However Terry for all his magnificent play and passion is unable to control the rabid dogs of Chelsea continually surrounding referees. The England captaincy could of course go to Ferdinand, alleged drug abuser.
ian grocott, rougnac, france
Capello doesn't like premiership style hot-headed commitment and over enthusiastic tackles. He may well be right, but don't fancy his chances of re-educating players who have come up in that system.
Anyone else getting a sinking feeling about Capello and the brave new dawn?
I am preparing myself for the usual Team England mediocrity and disapointments.
