England (4-4-2)
6 David James After sitting out the ill-fated European Championship campaign under Steve McClaren, James has reestablished himself as England’s No 1. The Portsmouth goalkeeper has benefited from the fact that his rivals are either too young (Joe Hart), too injury-prone (Chris Kirkland) or too much of a risk (Paul Robinson), not that he was able to demonstrate his skills last night.
4 Glen Johnson Another to benefit from Harry Redknapp’s tutelage at Portsmouth but yet to take full advantage. With Gary Neville returning from injury and Wes Brown perhaps out of his depth at the highest level, the right-back position is up for grabs. However, Johnson’s reckless first-half challenge on Hyland and the ease with which he was beaten by Daniel revealed his deficiencies.
6 Rio Ferdinand Suffered one of those occasional aberrations that continue to undermine his captaincy credentials, being beaten for pace by Kenwyne Jones before getting rescued by a crunching challenge from James that forced the Sunderland striker to leave the pitch, but was blemish-free thereafter. Remains the favourite for the captaincy, but will endure a nervous summer.
5 Jonathan Woodgate Not the ideal match for a centre back making his first appearance for 16 months and keen to impress a new manager, but given his injury record, Woodgate will have been relieved to come through unscathed. The Tottenham Hotspur defender did little wrong, making one crucial headed clearance as the hosts rallied midway through the first half, and will stay in the squad, fitness permitting.
7 Wayne Bridge Glad to see the back of Ashley Cole after acting as his understudy this season, and made the most of his first start under Fabio Capello. The Chelsea defender endured the odd tricky moment against the pace of Edwards but recovered from an early scare to get forward well, making the first goal for Barry and linking well with Downing. Unlikely to shift Cole in the long run, though.
7 David Beckham (c) The midfield player’s comebacks continue to amaze, regaining the captaincy two years after handing it over amid tears in the wake of World Cup heartache in Germany. Beckham brought much credit to the office and remains England’s most potent attacking weapon, picking out Defoe and Ashton with balls that more accomplished strikers may have scored from.
7 Steven Gerrard Slightly overshadowed by the midfield partner he hopes to be playing alongside for Liverpool next season, but their partnership was sufficiently promising to merit another look against the Czech Republic in August before Fabio Capello’s work begins in earnest with the World Cup qualifiers the next month. Began the move that led to the first goal with an intelligent ball to Downing.
8 Gareth Barry Gave away the ball in the second minute to confirm suspicions that he is a slow starter, but recovered to score his first England goal, on his 21st cap, after a late run into the six-yard box that would have made Frank Lampard proud. The Aston Villa midfield player will not be the next England captain, despite wearing the armband in the second half, but he brings enough balance to merit a regular place.
7 Stewart Downing Luxuriated in the Atlantic-sized oceans of space he was given by the wonderfully named opposing right back, Kern Cupid, who on this evidence must be one of the worst players masquerading as an international footballer. Downing took full advantage to reach the byline almost at will and played a fine ball to Bridge in the build-up to Barry’s opening goal, as well as picking out Defoe for the second.
7 Jermain Defoe Relieved to score his fourth and fifth goals on his 29th appearance after offering little goal threat against the United States, but other than his first in a World Cup qualifier against Poland four years ago, they have come against limited opposition. Could have his uses as an impact substitute, but, given his similar stature to Wayne Rooney, unlikely to become a regular feature.
5 Dean Ashton Has had to wait almost two years for his England debut after breaking his ankle in training in the build-up to Steve McClaren’s first match in charge, against Greece at Old Trafford, and seemed overeager to make up for lost time. Blasted wide from 30 yards after dropping deep to receive possession and volleyed an even better chance over the bar. Worked hard, but lacked composure.
Substitutions: Joe Hart (for James, 46min) 5, David Bentley (for Beckham, 46) 6, Peter Crouch (for Ashton, 46) 5, Phil Jagielka (for Ferdinand, 46) 5, Ashley Young (for Downing, 57) 6, Theo Walcott (for Defoe, 69) 6, Stephen Warnock (for Bridge, 84). Not used: Joe Lewis, David Wheater, Tom Huddlestone, Gabriel Agbonlahor Booked: Gerrard
