So by now you are as familiar with Andrei Arshavin and Slaven Bilic as you are with David Bentley and Martin O’Neill. Here is a look at some of the others whose stock has risen at Euro 2008. The nine players and one manager who may well be worth the consideration of a Premier League club.

Fatih Terim, 54 (Turkey)

Few managers are as aggressive, in terms of motivation and approach. Turkey, despite a long list of injuries and suspensions (and with a rather Blist squad to begin with), have reached the semi-finals thanks to last-minute heroics in each of their past three outings. Credit has to go to the “Emperor”. Terim’s sides love to gamble and play with a rare combination of guile and intensity, regardless of the personnel available. He has four Turkish titles and a Uefa Cup to his name, but deserves another shot at the big time. He did extremely well in his one season at Fiorentina and then fell out with club officials during his brief stay at AC Milan the next year. It is time to give him the stage he deserves.

Yuri Zhirkov, 24 (Russia/CSKA Moscow)

He can play anywhere on the left flank, equally adept as a full back and as a winger. He has always been able to beat his man and deliver a cross, but he has improved tremendously from a defensive standpoint too, and may be the best left back in the competition.

Jérémy Toulalan, 24 (France/Lyons)

OK, so he did get caught up in Raymond Domenech’s Gallic nightmare. However, it was not his fault that he was asked to play alongside Claude Makelele, the shorter, photo-negative version of himself. Toulalan is energetic, dynamic and an excellent ball-winner, who reads the game very well and could contribute plenty sitting in front of anyone’s back four.

Gabriel Tamas, 24 (Romania/Auxerre)

He has been hyped since the age of 19 and has changed clubs seven times, playing in five countries in his brief career. But it appears that he is finally beginning to harness his considerable physical gifts. He is strong, athletic and intense. While he may not have Franz Beckenbauer’s elegance on the ball, he knows his limitations and plays to his strengths. At Euro 2008, he more than held his own against the likes of Karim Benzema and Luca Toni, two very different but equally respected centre forwards.

Daniele De Rossi, 24 (Italy/AS Roma)

Surprisingly dropped for the Azzurri’s opener against Holland (which they duly lost 3-0), he returned with a vengeance and was arguably Italy’s best player in each of the final two group games. A natural leader, De Rossi does it all: he is a defensive work-horse, who can also act as a deeplying playmaker and loves to get forward, where his long-range efforts and aerial ability make him a constant threat. His contract expires in 2009, but he is close to signing a new one (which means that, if you want him for a reasonable price, you had better hurry). Oh, he also happens to speak English.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, 23 (Germany/Bayern Munich)

This former prodigy is angling for a move away from the Bundesliga and his recent performance against Portugal has only strengthened his case. Schweinsteiger is a versatile, dynamic midfield player, who can be deployed centrally or wide left. Plenty of energy, a cracking long-range shot and a tough-guy mentality would make him an asset to any side. Consistency has been a problem for him in the past, although, at his age, it is understandable. Remarkably, he has already amassed 54 caps.

Arda Turan, 21 (Turkey/Galatasaray)

His late, late heroics have already guaranteed him a place in European Championship history. Technically one of the most complete players to come out of Turkish football, he has played wide, but his future will probably be in a more central position as an attacking midfield player. A talented dribbler with plenty of pace and an uncannily creative and precise passer, there was concern at first about whether he would be too lightweight at this level. He has proved the critics wrong, showing not only ability, but plenty of personality and character, as well.

Gökhan Inler, 23 (Switzerland/Udinese)

This high-energy, box-to-box dervish was arguably the best foreign player in Serie A last season. Inler covers lots of ground, defensively and in possession, and chips in with a few goals, too. He reads the game exceptionally well and, when necessary, provides a crunching tackle. A quiet figure off the pitch, he lets his football do the talking.

David Silva, 22 (Spain/Valencia)

He is the typical quick pixie, with a wide-ranging box of tricks. He plays wide left for Spain, but his future is most likely in the hole, where he can best display his range of passing and his shot from distance. He is stronger than his slight build suggests and is not afraid to mix it with the opposition.

Danijel Pranjic, 26 (Croatia/Heerenveen)

Joined the national side late, but has since established himself as an alert, efficient and team-oriented left back. He can cross the ball well and is a very accomplished medium-range passer. Despite his small size – 5ft 8in – he jumps well on set-pieces and is strong in the tackle. A late bloomer who has gone far, thanks to his own personal intensity and hunger.
