Franz Beckenbauer insists Jens Lehmann is in top form despite the German goalkeeper’s less than assured performances during Euro 2008.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper hopes to play a key role for Germany in the final of the tournament against Spain on Sunday, and Beckenbauer has defended Lehmann.

"Lehmann is on very good form right now," he said. "If Germany do not end up champions it certainly won't be down to the keeper."

Before the tournament, the European and World Cup winner labelled the decision to include Lehmann as ‘dangerous’. Lehmann, who will play for Stuttgart following his move from Arsenal, was at fault for both goals in Germany’s 3-2 semi-final victory against Turkey last Wednesday.

"Regarding those two goals he was left without cover by his defenders," Beckenbauer said.

Spain are in fine form ahead of the final on Sunday and Beckenbauer believes it will be a close contest.

“It’s 50-50,” he said. “At this rhythm Germany should be good for Sunday.”
