6 Jens Lehmann
Eccentric he may be, but solid as a rock when needed. Superb reaction save to keep out Iniesta’s deflected shot off Metzelder. Looked to be going in. Kept out long-range effort from Fàbregas, but could have done better with Torres’s goal.
5 Arne Friedrich
Played almost exclusively at right back and consequently little was seen of him in attack. Had he got forward more, Germany perhaps would have had greater threat up front. Defended stoutly but outwitted by the electric Iniesta.
4 Per Mertesacker
Lack of understanding with Metzelder has been pinpointed by observers as the finals have progressed. Shown up again last night. Forays forward at set-pieces could have salvaged his reputation but could not get on end of free kicks.
4 Christoph Metzelder
Almost scored own goal and struggled with the pace and strength of Torres all evening. Played too far apart from Mertesacker, his centre-back partner, as he had all tournament. Nowhere to hide, not even behind his bushy beard.
3 Philipp Lahm
Great when bombing forward, always willing to show off tasty left peg. But, oh dear, desperately at fault for Torres’s goal in 33rd minute. Too slow, too weak and too late. Torres nipped in and shrugged him off. Replaced at half-time.
5 Torsten Frings
A pugnacious presence in midfield, but not one of his better performances. Not helped by Hitzlsperger being quiet alongside him. Picked up the tempo in the second half, but too little, too late from the Werder Bremen warrior.
4 Thomas Hitzlsperger
Showed many of the delightful left-footed touches that he used in Aston Villa days but still too lightweight when going gets tough. Tough it got, especially in the heat of the midfield battle, and he gradually faded.
5 Bastian Schweinsteiger
Blond shock of hair makes him stand out and plenty of all-action displays in the past to get him noticed, too. Not last night, though. Tried to provide support for Podolski and Klose but closed out by Puyol and Marchena.
6 Michael Ballack
Recovered from a prematch injury scare but had to leave pitch for repairs to cut eyebrow. Returned to fray but, despite showing nasty streak when bowling over Fàbregas, could not be faulted for his commitment to the Germany cause.
4 Lukas Podolski
Flitted around ineffectively and frustration became evident when went head-to-head with Silva in second half. Either player could have received a yellow card – or red – but were let off. Roberto Rosetti proved a lenient referee.
4 Miroslav Klose
Spurned early half-chance when seizing on loose clearance but overran ball to let opportunity go begging. With Germany on back foot, little scope to show his predatory skills. Needed treatment for injury in second half.
