Carlos Queiroz says he is relishing the chance to lead Portugal in their World Cup qualification campaign. The former Manchester United assistant manager was unveiled to the media today, replacing Luiz Felipe Scolari who has taken over at Chelsea.

"I am extremely happy to be here," Queiroz said. "I have returned to the national team because I am convinced that we have a great challenge ahead of us and I want to be a part of it.

"I want to thank everyone for their support and I want to repay that trust with dedication and effort to meet the aims of the federation and the expectations of the fans.

"We are going to focus immediately on the 12 points that are up for grabs in the next couple of months in our 2010 World Cup qualifiers."

Queiroz, who spent several seasons at Old Trafford and also had one year in charge of Real Madrid, has signed a four-year contract with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The 55-year-old returns to the FPF for the first time in 15 years after a spell as Under-20s coach early in his career.
