David James 5 (out of 10)
Kept a clean sheet at Wembley against Manchester United in the Community Shield ten days earlier, but a repeat never looked likely. Not at fault for the first goal and probably could not have stopped Jankulovski’s free kick, although James was wrong-footed and seemed to see it late, perhaps because he was standing behind his wall. Made an ill-judged ramble far from his net in the second half.
Wes Brown 5
A bitter-sweet evening for the Manchester United defender, whose defensive deficiencies cannot be entirely masked by the scoring of his first goal on his eighteenth England appearance. Like his team-mates, he was too slow to react in the move that led to the Czechs' opener, but there was desire and bite at the other end as he headed home Beckham's corner just before half-time.
Rio Ferdinand 6
How would he react to coming second in the captaincy auditions? Well, he performed better than the man alongside him in central defence in permanent possession of the armband. He had one casual moment when he allowed Baros to sneak in a shot from a tight angle after 15 minutes, but overall was the best - or perhaps that should be the least worst - of the England back four.
John Terry 4
To say he looked sluggish would be an insult to slugs. Appeared unsteady on his feet on the wet ground, not for the first time in his life, and was twisted and turned by Baros at the heart of a defence that was far too easily discomfited by a side deploying a lone striker. For the first goal, he tugged Baros's shirt, yet the Czech forward still turned him with ease and shot.
Ashley Cole 5
Some promising attacking moments as he linked with Rooney and especially Gerrard down the left, but suffered from the same defensive doziness as his colleagues. Was caught upfield several times when the Czechs swiftly counter-attacked. Lacked alertness in the seventh minute, when he helped to give Vlcek a free shot at goal, which he fluffed. The first goal was deflected off his foot.
David Beckham 5
Has played all but one of the Los Angeles Galaxy's matches this season, so it was surprising that he looked rusty in the opening stages, mis-hitting a succession of free kicks and crosses. But his delivery soon improved to its usual high standard, and it was from his corner that Brown equalised. Lazy offside appeal in the second half almost cost England a goal, as he stopped and let Sverkos run clear.
Gareth Barry 4
The (still) Aston Villa player appeared in all 11 England matches last season but will have to step up his game if he is to be an ever-present this campaign. It was one of his poorest performances in an England shirt for some time. Did a bad job of protecting the back four, frequently out of position, repeatedly outwitted and showed little rapport with Lampard. Booked for a dire late challenge on Plasil.
Steven Gerrard 7
England's best performer, as so often. Deployed wide left, as he was against the United States in May, and although it is far from his favourite position he was again a threat, with impressive control despite the wet conditions. Like Joe Cole, cuts inside his man and tends to drift towards space in the centre. A powerful low shot from distance in the eighth minute was a highlight.
Frank Lampard 5
Received a distinctly mixed reception from the fans when he was substituted, with as many booing as clapping. But this wasn't a display that should have generated extreme reactions: it was simply average. Even though Lampard tried to support the attack, he lacked Gerrard's dynamism and danger, and the Czechs sliced through the middle too easily when they went forward.
Wayne Rooney 6
Four England games without a goal now for Rooney. He played well enough, but often deferred to Defoe - setting up chances for his strike partner from deep positions, when it would be nice to see him taking shots himself. Still, he did force Cech to save a decent glanced header from a cross by Beckham and there was less of the excess aggression he showed against the United States.
Jermain Defoe 6
Failed to establish an understanding with Peter Crouch for Portsmouth in the FA Community Shield but dovetailed far better with a much shorter forward, Rooney, last night, impressing with some speedy, direct running. Shooting could have been better but at least he had a few attempts on goal. Showed quick feet to get away a shot under pressure midway through the first half.
