Will someone have the balls to put “Goldenballs” in his place? David Beckham is hurting England and I can't believe Fabio Capello hasn't noticed - and that Beckham's team-mates aren't trying to sort out the problems he creates. It's in their interest because the way the former captain is playing is making the rest of the midfield look bad. He could cost them their places.
Against the Czech Republic, as usual, Beckham was indulgently wandering wherever he liked with no sense of positional discipline. It unbalanced the team. One moment he's where he should be, on the right; the next he's drifted over towards the centre, even the left wing. It's a recipe for confusion. Beckham is far from the only culprit for England's poor show at Wembley but I'm shocked that a manager of Capello's stature can't see the issues Beckham's tactical failings are causing.
Take the Czech Republic's first goal. Beckham gives away the ball on the right, moves towards the centre and ends up on the left, leaving Wes Brown exposed at right back. Do Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry tell him to get back to his place? No, they let him wander into their territory and even get out of his way. Beckham is constantly demanding the ball. He's hungry, which is fine - but it's no wonder then that Barry and Lampard look anonymous when Beckham's jogging into their position and collecting the ball, or taking set-pieces he should leave to others. What does he do in possession? He's always looking for the 30 or 40-yard glory ball. But to whom? What's the use in finding a player who's isolated because his team-mates are out of position as a result of these ramblings?
Beckham's England reputation is founded on the World Cup qualifier against Greece in 2001 when he scored a crucial equaliser from a last-minute free kick. But watch the game again and you'll see him play like he did on Wednesday: roaming wherever he fancies, neglecting his defensive duties. It's all forgotten because of that superb free kick.
The difference between Beckham now and then is that his legs are betraying him. He's never been quick but he always had a fantastic engine. These days he's that fraction slower, that bit less energetic, and so he's not able to support the attack or protect the defence well enough. He's just sitting deep spraying passes.
Beckham's supporters will say that his set-piece expertise can win games. But there are too many negatives to justify his inclusion ahead of David Bentley or Gabriel Agbonlahor. Good teams will expose him. You can just see this scenario happening: Beckham plays against Andorra, scores a free kick and everybody's happy. Then Capello picks him in Zagreb and England lose looking disorganised, unimaginative and slow. Golden? I don't think so.

I know when you think the world is crazy the fault usually lies with yourself. But Becks...he can actually create things. No one else has shown that ability. Bentley hasnt done a thing, Walcott cannot cross and Agbonlahor is a striker Tony- homework. if we stand a chance, David must play.

Seems to me to be a lot of comments here from people that watched the game from the comfort of a barstool/armchair/DB fanclub HQ. Having been to the game (and many others) Beckham was constantly out of position and unable to put one of his famed dead balls past the first man on many occasions.
Richard, Bristol,
I was sitting on the halfwayline for England vs Greece. In the second half, everyone had given up except Beckham, especially on the right. I can forgive him everything else in his on-field career after seeing that performance. Off-field is another matter...
ja, London,
i think beckham played awesome against greece. he ran tryin to make a difference n in da end he did....he s a golden player no mata wat people say or write about him.....widout him england players cannot provide a good attack, its only wid his long balls. Let da manager decide hus plays in da team.
Sana , Bradford, England
I agree with Mike from huddersfield, beckham was awesome against greece and was only rivalled by nigel martyn who made a couple of matchwinning saves.
However, at this moment in time, David Bentley would be a better option. Agbonlahor lacks consistency.
Chido, Durham,
Beckham was England's best player in the Greece game. The rest of the England team were dire - it was only Beckham's awesome performance that kept them in with a shout, and then fired in the free-kick.
Whilst the man might be dropping off now, he has been an utterly brilliant player for England.
Stuart, Leicester,
Beckham had possibly the best game ive ever seen from an England player against Greece.
mike, huddersfield, uk
How can anyone say that beckham is constantly searching for personal glory? He has admitted that he prefers assisting than scoring goals himself! At least Becks helped England salvage some pride when he set up Brown's goal from his superb corner. Its time to stop uing Becks as the scape-goat!
Hattie Mulhearn, Bungay, England
Drop Beckham once and for all; he has his 100 caps, what more does he want?
Beckham was never any good at wandering round the pitch - he simply isn't talented enough, he was never Zidane and never will be. He doesn't have the legs and is constantly searching for his individual glory.
Sundeep Bhamra, London ,
I agree that David Beckham has probably ceased to be a particularly useful member of the England team. But Cascarino's attempt to dismiss Beckham's entire international career is alarmingly bitter. And invalid. And rather rich, coming from such a carthorse.

Concerning 'the goal' against Greece, people forget the job Sheringham did, by spinning and pulling the wall out of position as Beckham took the shot, had he not done so, would the ball still of gone in ?
For all his heart he should not still be starting games for England.
Dean Parkinson, Grimsby, England
It's about time somebody spoke up about the infatuation with Beckham who surely never should have been anywhere near 100 England caps. Once again he has shown his limitations and for years he has been in the way of the international developement of other wide players.
Well spoken Tony Cascarino
Richard H Allison, Norwich,
It is so narrow minded to always blame beckham. Lampard, Rooney, Terry, Gerrard were all well below par on wednesday-but the blame always has to lie at beckhams door. Mclaren left beckham out of the team and we were no better then-so please for once, just admit that its not beckham to blame!
zoe, chelt,

Absolutely spot on, Cas. Playing with Beckham is like playing with 10 men - he takes one of his own players out of the game while taking up his space and he leaves holes where he should be - he takes all deadballs making the team predictable, and its been going on for far too long.
Dave, Bristol,
I think we saw from the Euro Qualifying how much England needs David Beckham. Gareth Barry is the one that needs to go. Put four in the midfield or use Hargreaves.
Evan, Charleston, USA
I'm at a loss to see how anyone can rate Bentley ahead of Beckham. Sure, Bentley tries to go past players, but he generally fails. Beckham's passing is superior and he can fail to go past players without even trying!
Tim, Notts,
At MUFC, in Beckham's early days he would get to the within the 18yd box using Neville to overlap to send in superb crosses, but Fergie spotted the traits developing, stated in the article, ie 'crossing from the half way' line becoming the norm - thats why he was ushured out of the door to Madrid
Dave, Manchester,
Surely a good side should have players that are able to interchange like Manchester United and Arsenal. If Beckham comes inside, it just needs one of the other players eg Lampard or Gerrard to be intelligent enough to know they have to move to the right. The players are not statues on the pitch.
Lorraine, Oxford,
rubish. David Beckham was one of the better player last night. where is stupid idea came from??
alan, London,
At last someone speaks sense, and amazingly it's tony Cascarino.
End the Beckham PR stunt now. 2 years too late, alas.
