England
David James: caps 43, age 38
He was put under more pressure by the backpasses of Upson and Brown than anything else early on, but was important when Kazakhstan stepped up their attacking after half-time. Alert save from Nuserbayev’s shot to preserve the lead just after Ferdinand scored 7/10
Wes Brown: caps 20, age 28
Solid, reliable, unspectacular Brown achieved pass marks. His defensive work was sound, especially tidying up when Upson was under pressure just before the interval, but for England to become a top-level nation the attacking of their full-backs has to improve 6/10
Rio Ferdinand: caps 41, age 29
The programme ran a feature on England’s all-time top 20 scorers; Ferdinand will never be in that but he has a habit of coming up with goals at important times. Kazakh keeper Alexandr Mokin tugged his mullet in frustration at giving Capello’s skipper a free header 7/10
Matthew Upson: caps 10, age 29
Upson had a turkey, beaten in an early aerial challenge by tiny Tanat Nuserbayev and not really improving from there. Poor with his distribution, although his tackling improved and he semi-redeemed himself with a vital penalty box interception on the hour 4/10
Ashley Cole: caps 68, age 27
Enjoying a renaissance for Chelsea but this was back to the Dark Ages for the left-back, who continues to struggle for England. Offered nothing going forward and goodness knows what he was thinking with the lazy pass to gift Zhambyl Kukeyev Kazakhstan’s goal 3/10
Steven Gerrard: caps 69, age 28
Got the biggest cheer when England team was read out but he was unable to reward the fans with the kind of performance he regularly gives at Anfield. Passing not up to his best but good moments too, including a breathtaking surge and one-two with Rooney 6/10
Frank Lampard: caps 65, age 30
Led the counter-attack for England’s third and his set-pieces provided goals one and two. Another step in Lampard’s international rehabilitation, he enjoyed the role given him by Capello, who seems to have decided he is to be given more attacking licence than Gerrard 8/10
Gareth Barry: caps 24, age 27
Did little wrong during his 45 minutes and his half-time substitution by Shaun Wright-Phillips was tactical, not punitive. Always in position and always tidy in tackling and passing, he was missed defensively and without him England were vulnerable to counter-attacks 6/10
Theo Walcott: caps 5, age 19
The pace and trickery of Walcott’s early running had opponents choking on their pre-match horse stew and he went close with an early curler from 35 yards. The Arsenal teen remains a vital block in the team Capello is building, though he faded as the match progressed 6/10
Emile Heskey: caps 49, age 30
As unselfish as Mother Teresa but then that is what we have come to expect from the Wigan man. A first-touch layoff to Lampard early on typified what he is about and he won his share of flick-ons from high balls. Still looks a million miles from being a goal threat, though 6/10
Wayne Rooney: caps 47, age 22
New haircut, old Rooney. The past two matches under Capello have suggested the Rooney of Euro 2004 and he was England’s best player. Wrongly credited with second goal by Wembley stadium announcer but no doubt about his finish for goals number three and four 8/10
Substitutes
Shaun Wright-Phillips offered greater width after replacing Gareth Barry. Beckham came on for Theo Walcott to draw customary shrieks of pleasure from his biggest fans, the Wembley crowd
