The tension between Fabio Capello and Rafael Benítez grew last night, with the Liverpool manager bewildered by his England counterpart's insistence that Steven Gerrard make a six-hour round trip to prove that he was not fit enough to play for his country in tomorrow's friendly match against Germany.
Gerrard is one of seven first-choice players who have pulled out of the match in Berlin, but his absence has caused by far the greatest controversy, with Capello irked by Liverpool's announcement on Sunday that their captain would miss the match, having suffered a groin injury during their 2-0 victory away to Bolton Wanderers 24 hours earlier.
Eager to prove a point - whether to Gerrard or to Benítez, with whom he has clashed over the player's fitness this season - Capello demanded that the Liverpool captain report to the England team hotel in Hertfordshire to be assessed by the Football Association's medical staff.
The FA quickly confirmed Liverpool's diagnosis of a torn adductor muscle, leaving Gerrard to make the three-hour journey back to Merseyside yesterday, but tensions remain between Capello and Benítez, with both managers unhappy at the way that the other has handled the matter.
After Frank Lampard joined the list of absentees yesterday because of a rib injury, the FA moved last night to dispel conspiracy theories that leading players had withdrawn from the squad while fit enough to represent their clubs. The other notable absentees are Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey, along with David Beckham, who is considered to lack match fitness, meaning that, of the first-choice starting line-up, only David James, Gareth Barry, Theo Walcott and John Terry - the England captain has recovered from a foot injury - are available to play in Berlin.
However, a frustrated Capello has reluctantly accepted that all their injuries are genuine, even if in many cases the players are likely to be fit to play for their clubs in the Barclays Premier League next weekend.
“It's just very unfortunate that we've got a lot of players who are regulars in the squad who are not around,” Adrian Bevington, the FA's director of communications, said. “The fact is that players have been down and have been assessed and we are satisfied that these players have legitimate injuries. The medical scans show it up, so there shouldn't be any suggestion or innuendo otherwise. The players are absolutely gutted that they are not able to play for England in Berlin on Wednesday night.” Jimmy Bullard, of Fulham, and Scott Parker, of West Ham United, have been called up to bolster Capello's midfield resources.
Gerrard will be more disappointed than any of his fellow absentees, particularly because his commitment to the England cause has again been questioned. Capello was disappointed when Gerrard was ruled out of the opening World Cup qualifying matches against Andorra and Croatia in September, believing that Liverpool had timed his groin operation to serve their interests at the expense of those of his country.
Benítez felt on this occasion that he had handled the matter in the correct manner, with messages conveyed to Capello via his medical staff, as has become the norm, before a club statement was issued on Sunday afternoon. The Liverpool manager defended his handling of the matter yesterday. “We had to do a scan after the Bolton game because Steven said he had some pain in his groin,” he said. “It is not a massive problem and we hope he will be ready to return in seven to ten days.”
While Scott Carson, Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Darren Bent expect to appear in Berlin at some stage, the ultra-competitive Capello is likely to keep experimentation to a minimum in the first half, preferring a more solid and experienced line-up in the hope of extending England's unbeaten run to eight matches.

It's the club that pay the wages for the player and they are the ones who lose out without any compensation when they come back injured for stupid friendly games.
patrick, Perth, Australia
Hi Andrew!
The English Team doctors should ask for and receive the medical diagnosis and actual scans etc. rather than repeat a physical diagnosis and subject a senior player to a nuisance trip! There must be a better way to prove a legitimate injury.
Ian Jardine, Madison, USA
Gerrard should tell capello to shove his england shirt.
Its about time he solved the lampard v gerrard once and for all.
Rick, Macclesfield, United Kingdom
Capello does what he thinks it is the best for the team; I don't think he cares a bit of what people think of him (he never did): what he wants is win, win, win. That should be enough for everyone
alfredo, milan, italy
Imagine our England International squad was a Premiership team squad. Can you imagine a team ever having this many first team injuries going into a game? Yet this seems to happen for every friendly.
Joseph, Leeds, UK
Couldn't the doctor travel to Anfield?
D Jones, Madrid, Spain
Most managers of big clubs are not that keen on their stars players appearing for England in friendlies. The Premier League is what it's all about. And it does appear suspcious that so many top players seem to have injuries when friendlies come up. Capello has every right to check.
Andrew Jardine, Hong Kong, CHina
Funny that most the absentees happen to be Man utd and Chelsea players? Why does Capello only demand Gerrard to report to camp? I think this is the worst decision Capello has made since taking over and he really should be having words with Fergie & Scolari
Nick , Cambridge, England
Dear RD, Almeria
1,Gerrard is not the normal captain, though he should be.
2, There was nothing to say he did not want to represent his country, he was INJURED!
3, Benitez has to put Liverpool first, it's his JOB!
Sarah, Chester, UK
How does this proves Capello's point?
How does the headline relate to the story?
Gerrard and Liverpool were correct, Capello decided to check for himself because he didn't believe the club and found that the club and player were telling the truth so again, why the headline
Ged, London,
I would have refused to send Gerard, if Capello thinks Benitez is lying, he is a disgrace.
Michael Rigby, blackburn,
Why would Benitez care about England, he's Spanish. When in time has there been any trust between club and country? Why is it surprising that club managers look after their own players when their jobs are on the line? Isn't it down to the player to decide his allegiance and live by his decsion?
jonners, weybridge,
Well done Fabio, keep the pressure on.
Tim, Singapore,
Does anyone do you really think he cares what anyone else thinks? I think not. He does what he feels is in the best interests of team and squad. Even if it is occasionally the wrong decision.
Hey.....no1's perfect.
matt, Southampton, UK
Listen, I really think Gerrard deserves some credit!!!

Gavin from the midlands,
Footballers get paid by the FA to play for England. They dont do it for free.
Big John from Liverpool,
Capello has proved the point that he expects 100% commitment from his players.
Seems like Gerrard was happy to show that commitment.Havent heard a complaint from him!
Max, Truro, UK
can u blame capello for being sceptical, how many times are england players unfit for england duty on a wednesday and then are miraculously recovered by the saturday.
if players arent prepared to play in a "friendly" against germany they should never play for england again.
will, grimsby, uk
It's a simple question of trust for Capello. Given previous events (when LFC witheld from Capello that Gerrard was due to go in for an op... Capello then played him in a friendly not knowing he would not be available in the competitive matches) it is entirely understandable for him to be sceptical.
Nick , Liverpool,
I agree he could have easily had the scans from the Liverpool docotrs. He owes a massive apology to Gerrard whether it be public or private and I wouln't blame Gerrard for walking away from this now...like Carragher he may quit England sooner rather than later.
Taz, Leicester,
The FA reserve the right to call players up whether they are injured or not. You'd have to be extremely naive to assume that every reported injury is genuine. Capello was simply asserting his authority. He was right on this occassion. Some people are so petty they see these things as "win" or "lose"
harry, manchester, uk
I can't believe people are criticising Gerrard on here. He's complied with the FA's ridiculous demands and Capello has been left with egg on face. I really hope that privately apologies have been made to Gerrard - he'd be well within his rights after this clear lack of trust to walk away altogether.
Matt Houston, London, UK
This article is headed "Fabio proves his point" ...How? In fact he's ended up looking silly by his suspicions being proved wrong and by not accepting the word of Liverpool based U21 doctor. Why not send a doctor to Liverpool? Gerrard should pack in like Carragher did.
Big John, Liverpool,
Perhaps Capello thinks Benitez is a liar (in other walks of life that could end up in court). The time has come for clubs to tell the FA that they will no longer release players for friendlies which appear only there to generate the income to pay often second rate national team managers.
Rod Harrison, Brighouse, UK
surely the concern should be the breakdown in trust between the premiership managers and the FA
alastair harris, DERBY,
Is RD-Almeria in Fairyland?
When has Gerrard been the normal England captain? Isn't that John Terry?
A player's club pays his wages and suffers after international injuries - look at Torres who has incurred several injuries for Spain and has cost Liverpool at lot in being unavailable.
Padraig, Perth, Australia
Friendlies in this day & age are a complete waste of time especially when they are scheduled in the midst of a football season.
Harvey Hui, Singapore,
I hope now Gerrard retires from this comedy national team. What the point of playing for free and risking so much injuries for a country that could not even send their doctors to Anfield instead of mis-trusting the Liverpool doctors. Lets hope Germany stuff Ingurland now!
Gavin, Mids, UK
I am amazed that Gerrard, as the normal England captain, does not want to be present to support tha squad. Also, Benitez has no right to come over all hurt & misundertood when so many times he has clearly put Livepool before England in his priorities. He is reaping the rewards of that bias.
RD, Almeria,
In the words of Spike Milligan, 'i told you i wasn't very well'
jonners, weybridge,
Perhaps Capello did not believe Liverpool? After seeing Gerrard play 90 minutes and fling himself about and then for the club to announce that he was injured straight afterwards is highly suspicious. I know Liverpool think that rules are for other clubs but I'm glad that he took a stand this time.
Wolfie Smith, Sutton in Ashfield, UK
capello has made benitez look a fool ,england football team is a sham, did he want to look at chelsea or man u players to see if they were unfit NO ! Liverpool doesnt need england ,caragher made the right choice in the end to not play again .
mark orchard, milton keynes, uk
Quite a few "gentlemen of the press" are eating humble pie this morning after besmirching Gerrard and Benitez' name yesterday.
Mortice, london,
This has not only embarassed the England medical staffs but also ridiculed the reputation of its own U21 doctor, Mark Waller, who is also the Anfield doctor.
If Capello refuse to get the FA's appointed doctor's trust in words, it is might as well that Waller to quit as the England medical staff.
Kent, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
Maybe its time to admit that International Duty is handed over to the championship. Then we will have an axis of the willing English with something to prove; and at the same time improve exposure to accessible football. And let's face it... would have done as well as England have done for ages.
marzy, paris, france
sounds like money men of the premiership may have spoken
paul, wellington, new zealand
This is typical of the British press, trying to create a problem between the mangers so you've got something to write about!
