Arsène Wenger has called on Fifa, the world governing body, and Uefa, its European equivalent, to clamp down on players who pick and choose which international matches they play in by pretending that they are injured.
The Arsenal manager urged the bodies to act after he discovered that he will be without Theo Walcott for up to four months. The 19-year-old winger dislocated his right shoulder during training on Tuesday before England's 2-1 victory over Germany in Berlin the next day.
While Wenger has always been happy to release Arsenal players for international fixtures - “unless they are on crutches,” the Frenchman said yesterday - he suspects that other Barclays Premier League clubs are bending the rules by withdrawing players when they may be fit enough to play.
“Many players pulled out because this friendly was very badly scheduled,” Wenger said. “It would be very interesting for Fifa and Uefa to make a study of any players who have not played on Wednesday in any national team and who will play on Saturday or on next Tuesday and Wednesday in the Champions League.”
Walcott was one of only four England regulars who were expected to start against Germany on Wednesday. The build-up to the victory was overshadowed by players such as Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard making themselves unavailable, citing various aches and pains. Ferdinand and Rooney did not play in Manchester United's 5-0 victory over Stoke City last weekend, but Gerrard and Lampard played 90 minutes for their clubs and Cole was an unused substitute in Chelsea's 3-0 victory away to West Bromwich Albion. Walcott started and finished Arsenal's 2-0 defeat by Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium even though he had just recovered from an unrelated shoulder injury.
“What I want is for it to be the same for everybody with injuries and the national team.” Wenger said. “You can go to the best specialist in the world and you can say you have pain in your Achilles. He can do three scans and say there is nothing. You say you have pain and he will have to believe you. I do not accuse Rooney or Gerrard of having nothing, but you have plenty of people in Europe who have not played this week.”
The only good news for Wenger after a miserable week that started with the defeat by Villa and continued with Walcott's injury and William Gallas's outburst about his team-mates is that Arsenal will be able to claim up to £1.1million from the FA's insurers to cover for the loss of their star. “I'm disappointed because he is an important part of our squad, but it could have happened here,” Wenger said. “I do not blame the FA.”
Having lost four times in the league this season, to Fulham, Hull City, Stoke and Villa, Wenger is under pressure from Arsenal supporters to fix his side's problems by buying reinforcements when the transfer window opens in January. “First, I want this team to perform to the maximum of their potential,” Wenger said. “I don't want to give them excuses at the moment, to think, ‘OK, we can go on like that, and, in January ...' We want to perform on Saturday and bounce back and show that we have humility and desire.”
Kolo Touré will miss tomorrow's match away to Manchester City after the defender aggravated a calf injury during Ivory Coast's 2-2 draw away to Israel and Arsenal will also be without Cesc Fàbregas, who is suspended. Eduardo da Silva, the Croatia forward, who has been sidelined with serious leg and ankle injuries since February, is expected to start training with the first-team squad at the end of next week.
