Scott Loach
Started the season playing for Morecambe, finished it in goal for England in a
European final, but will be remembered for losing the flight of Mesut Ozil’s
free kick. 4
Martin Cranie
Undone by Ozil’s fine ball for Gonzalo Castro’s goal, the Portsmouth right
back tried to support James Milner down the right flank but was too often
outfoxed defensively. 5
Micah Richards
Edging past Michael Mancienne this tournament, he has enhanced his chances of
making it back in the seniors. Finished the night up front. 6
Nedum Onuoha
He has been the rock at the heart of Pearce’s defence, but, having
struggled with a thigh injury, he was sacrificed at half-time. 5
Kieran Gibbs
Harshly picked out for criticism when Sweden came back strongly in the
semi-final, the Arsenal left back continues to look silky on the ball going
forward. 6
Fabrice Muamba
Once again linked the play intelligently and forcefully, although Ozil got
away from him for the first goal. 6
James Milner
One of the players of the tournament. The Aston Villa winger never stopped
demanding the ball but a back injury curtailed his 47th and final under-21
game. 8
Lee Cattermole
Has grown in authority out here. Was often the team’s most vocal player and
passed the ball crisply and early. Struck the crossbar with a fine 20-yard
shot. 7
Mark Noble
Covered every proverbial blade of glass but could not produce the killer pass
hoped of him. 5
Adam Johnson
He twisted and he turned, he tracked back diligently, but too often failed to
lay the ball off. Almost pulled a goal back with back-heel that was cleared
off the goalline. 5
Theo Walcott
Started superbly well in his favoured central role, shooting wide after
Milner’s through-ball, but suffered when England started going long and
subsequently disappeared. 5
