England went one further than in the previous European Under-21 Championship by reaching the final in Malmo, but, looking beneath the surface of their 4-0 defeat by Germany, which players have enhanced their reputation during the tournament?
Winners
James Milner
England's record cap holder at this level, the Aston Villa winger's 47th and final game for the Under-21s epitomised why he must go to South Africa. He was at the heart of everything good England managed in the final, upping his game as others fell away, demanding the ball, beating his man – one run to the byline to create Adam Johnson's chance was simply brilliant – and tracking back relentlessly. Created four and scored one of England's eight goals. Played high up in a team lacking forwards; finished the season at right-back for Villa. A man for all seasons – a man for Capello.
Micah Richards
England's best defender of the tournament, he was a humungous presence in the air, at both ends, and allied his athleticism to good decision-making.
Badly needs a run of games in the Barclays Premier League to consolidate what this tournament has reawakened – if he is not a regular in August, he should leave Manchester City. Aston Villa and Everton would find room for him.
Jack Rodwell
Suggested that the technical ability of the younger age group is superior. His display in the first game against Germany was the prototype for how to anchor a midfield. David Moyes is well aware of what he has and Everton is the perfect place for a man who only turned 18 in March to keep progressing. Composure on the ball and awareness of others' positioning showed great maturity. Outside bet to go to South Africa.
Kieran Gibbs
Still adapting to the left-back role in which he played the second half of last season for Arsenal, he can expect much more experience under Arsene Wenger this coming season. Lithe, athletic, versatile and with a velvet touch, he is much admired within the FA and has a decent chance of making the World Cup squad, even if he was occasionally exposed in Sweden.
