Martin O’Neill will rule himself out of the running to be the next England head coach in another huge blow to the Football Association. The Aston Villa manager, widely tipped to succeed Steve McClaren, will confirm today that he wants to stay in the Midlands, which will leave the governing body to see whether there is interest from potential foreign candidates such as Jürgen Klinsmann, José Mourinho or perhaps even Rafael BenÍtez.
O’Neill is understood to be uneasy about ruling himself out of a job that has not been offered to him, but, with speculation feverish, he has decided to clarify his future after talks with Randy Lerner, the Villa owner. They met in the United States last week and have established long-term plans to take Villa forward.
The revelation that O’Neill, who has not ruled out managing England one day, does not want to be considered now will come as a huge disappointment to Brian Barwick, the FA chief executive, who is a big admirer.
O’Neill’s withdrawal from the race almost certainly means that the next England head coach will not be from the British Isles. “Nationality doesn’t necessarily have to be an issue,” Barwick said yesterday, knowing that he will almost certainly have to look to a foreigner.

Alan Shearer has been mentioned as a dark horse, but the appointment of the former England striker would represent a massive gamble. He has not managed at any level. The FA needs to be certain that the next man can reach the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. England will discover their group rivals on Sunday.
Mourinho would be a hugely popular choice, but while a close associate confirmed to The Timesyesterday that he would listen to an approach, it is questionable whether he would genuinely be interested in two years of intermittent qualifiers and friendlies. He has previously stated that the only international coaching job to interest him was with Portugal, and then only at the end of his club career.
The former Chelsea manager did express his sadness for England. “Without them, the tournament [Euro 2008] will not be great,” he said. “It’s a pity that top players like Gerrard, Terry, Lampard, Cole and Ferdinand will not be there.”
Klinsmann would be a daring choice and not just because he is German. Like Mourinho, he also watched England’s defeat against Croatia on Wednesday, having paid $24.95 to see it on pay-TV at home in California. An Anglophile who is ready to return to work, he has strong views about how to coach, which includes employing a huge team of specialists.
Benítez emerged as a surprise, if distant, contender last night as fresh doubts emerged about his long-term future at Liverpool after another breakdown in communication with the club’s American owners, George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks. The Spaniard was in a dark mood yesterday and said he might be tempted by the FA’s vacancy “if I improve my English”. Later, when asked if he was joking, he insisted that he was not and that he was “serious” in what he had said.
McClaren and his assistant, Terry Venables, were dismissed yesterday after England’s failure to reach Euro 2008. McClaren’s advisers have yet to agree compensation on the 2½ years left on his contract.

The title of this article says it all: "...as search for a hero begins". Typical of the media to unduly glorify anything remotely related to football. What you need is a COACH not a hero!!!

A, Chesterfield,
Barwick was a big fan of maclaren at the time, that says alot for his Knowledge of management in football.
Why do the FA not listen to the England supporters for once , employ a manager who would have the country behind him.
Mourinho is the peoples choice,or why not offer the job to the most succesful club manager Fergi .
Lets not go for a manager who would be good for public relations go for one who would be good for football.
The FA committee should also resign for leading the country into this mess.

Do not let BARWICK and his cronies pick another England manager, they were all in favour of the last one saying he is a top class catch, now they wished they had dropped him
MOURINHO IS THE PEOPLES CHOICE.
Barwick and all the suits at the FA should hang their heads in shame and resign ,.
Mick, Scunthorpe,
how about getting rid of the oldies at the FA. with some young blood we might get the football clubs on a rule to only play five foreign players so giving our own players a chance to develope .also a stadium with a roof. The fans could stay away from games for a week to show support that will quickly bring the bosses into line
tagger Leicester
e.taylor, Leicester,
what about harry potter for manager,if he could conjure some footballers up with England 1966 mentality, passion, and skills and scatter a bit of magic he could be the man.As J.K.is not writing any more books he may be available.
d.nicholson, seaton sluice, uk
Enenthough i don't ike jose Maurino i think he or Alan Sheerar should be the next england manager. Or they could work together.
Ahmad, London, UK
The best choice would be Fabio Capello, I hate him but you can bet he is a winner, and usually he wins!
Anddrew, Rome, Italy
We are a proud nation, but are we too proud? Is it simply not the case that we are not as good as we like to think we are?
I agree that the manager had to go, but at the end of the day there were 11 players on that pitch at any given time who are supposed to be the best this country can offer ( allowing for injuries and suspensions), so does it not follow that our best simply isn't good enough?
I think the shake up has to be from the highest in the FA right down to individual players , coaches, physios - the lot to re invent the England that we fans can all be proud of again.
As for the manager, in my view we could do with the passion of Pearce, and hopefully make it infectious amongst the players!
Sally Brown, Tamworth,
Jose Mourinho as Manager, Harry Redknapp/Glenn Hoddle as Assistant. 1. Mourinho 2. Capello 3.Redknapp. No other candidates should be considered.
Syed, London, England
You might forget mourinho because he said that he will train only the portuguese team at the end of this career!!
And with him, Portugal will be world champion in 2014 in Brazil!!!!!
D.R.F., brest, Europe
Surely Roy Hodgson has to be a top candidate from England....taking Finalnd very close to qualification .... with the likes of Mikel Forsell and Shefki Kuuki upfront and the Pacey Sami Hypia at the back... he has a huge amount of International experience and he could probably take Englands' third team to the world cup......
Ch, LA, UK
What about ... SAMMY LEE?
Timothy Kelly, Oxford, UK
Pleawse, please not Mourinho, he is not the right man at all, short termist and cracks under pressure. Wenger is surely the only man with the intelligence, knowledge, respect and he is determindly his own man.
Monty, Moscow, Russia
Why not Jay Jay Okocha?
Ronald McDough, bolton, UK
How about any RUGBY manager? From singing the national anthem to the end of the game, the difference in Pride, passion, country and honour is immense!
mike, gloucester, uk
Mclaren sacked, how about sacking the goalkeeping coach Ray clemence?
mike, gloucester, uk
O'Neill Redknapp Keane Coppell??? None have done anything! Winning the Scottish championship does not count surely!!!!
Passion Pride Guts honour....how about Under 21 Manager Pearce? Not achieved anything yet, but has all the characteristics.
mike, gloucester, uk
Redknapp, he is English and has proved he can manage a side of 2nd rate players to a high level. He is the man.
Harry, Portsmouth, Cumbria
Fabio Capello said he would like to take the job. What's more to discuss? Rush FA, before he changes his mind. Just a reminder, every team Capello coached won the league title (Milan 4, Juventus 2, Real Madrid 2, Roma 1) for a total of 9 titles in 15 seasons of coaching! Plus a 1994 Champions League title.
Milan, Trieste, Italy
Jose Morinho and Jurgen Klinsman would be fantastic choices, although I am a bit vary of Benitez whose rotation system at Liverpool might reveal itself in the England job. Harry Rednapp would be a good choice although I doubt he is going to leave Portsmouth. I don't think Roy Keane is experienced enough to take a job of such gravitas.
Fred, London,
Why is nobody considering Harry Redknapp? He has shown many times what can be done with an average team of players. Only this season has he had some real financial backing and he's improved the team with that as well.
He's the man for me!
JCS, Cheltenham, England
Gordon Ramsey?
Desperate Dan, London, UK
The best English option is undoubtedly Redknapp. Coppell is a great manager, but doesn't have the temperament to cope with the media circus. Either that or bring back Hoddle for a second incarnation.
Edward Benson, London,
What happened to the root and branch investigation? Here we go, down to two managers, race to appoint them, and then play friendlies until autumn 2008.
Get rid of Barwick please, Gill the accountant from Old Trafford, Sir David whoever, Lord such and such, get them out of the FA and then put somebody with international football experience in the FA.
These people should be down the road immediately , nothing less will do. Otherwise we have learnt nothing from our mistakes.
Alf Ramsey, Retired, Wembley.,
Why not just get the fans to vote during matches as to tactics and who to substitute when, have an interactive thing on the FA website. Would have about as much effect as any manager will. The manager is irrelevant, it's the institution that's got to change.
Alex, Birmingham, UK
Brian Ashton? Did a great job with the rugby team and is as qualified as Shearer to do it
alisdair gray, edinburgh,
why not Capello? he's a winner...
giorgio , monza, italy
What about Steve Coppell?
Paul McKechnie, Sydney, Australia
Roy Keane

Martin O'Neill would be mad to touch the England job with a barge pole. There is little prospect of turning matters around in the short to medium term whoever is in charge until there is a major review of the future set up of English football. He would be best to concentrate on and gain some job satisfaction in restoring Aston Villa to its long forgotten former glories in which he has made an excellent start.
Brian Kibble, Cheam, UK
Unlike with Jose Mourinho, the FA should write in a clause that McLaren has to coach another International team in the future.....
Pete, Melbourne, Australia
