Win Sky+HD for a year and a trip to Barcelona

Switzerland have been locked out of their own party, but their co-hosts dance on. Not that Austria possess much rhythm or co-ordination, but their timing is certainly eye-catching.
A late penalty awarded by Howard Webb, the English referee, earned a point that preserves Austria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages, though they must beat Germany on group B’s final day to progress. Croatia have won the group and Germany need a draw on Monday to join them in the last eight, while Poland must defeat Slaven Bilic’s side. The mediocrity of both teams in Vienna last night would have been the perfect morale-booster for Joachim Löw’s team after their earlier defeat.
This was Leo Beenhakker’s ninth match in charge of a team at a World Cup or European Championship finals and he is yet to win one. Not surprisingly, the Poland coach was aghast at the penalty award. “It is impossible to accept, but I’m working on it,” he said.
Webb pointed to the spot in injury time when Mariusz Lewandowski tugged Sebastian Prödl’s shirt. Ivica Vastic, the 38-year-old substitute, lashed in the penalty to become the oldest goalscorer in tournament history by more than four years. He showed a conviction absent in his team-mates — a brewery has offered a lifetime’s supply of beer to anyone who scores for Austria at Euro 2008 and, Vastic apart, their forwards played as if they had drunk the prize.
While Austria’s shooting was poor, Artur Boruc’s goalkeeping was excellent. It needed to be, since Poland’s defence was as compliant as it had been against Germany on Sunday. Boruc denied his opponents three times in the space of five first-half minutes, saving twice from Martin Harnik and then from Christoph Leitgeb.
Austria were duly mugged after half an hour by Roger Guerreiro, a forward who began the year as a Brazilian. Born in São Paulo, Guerreiro became a Polish citizen only in April after the President fast-tracked his application. Tracking is not something the Austria defence does well, though Guerreiro appeared to be offside when he tapped in after a shot by Marek Saganowski had been deflected into his path.
Austria were short on quality, composure and belief in the second half, but, luckily for them, Webb had the confidence to make a decisive impact.

I am really ashamed of what he did. we british are always a bit cocky, but sorry mate, that?s a bit too much. Stop being stubborn as a mule and just admit your wrong decision before you destroy our good image of British football.
Josh, London, UK
When the ball is in the action- everything can happen.
So calm down - live goes on.
Referee has made a lot of mistakes in this mach, but you don't repair mistakes by making another one - and that's all what should be said in this subject.
(sorry if I made any mistake, but I'm better in japanese:)
Mike, Warsaw, Poland
Webb's decision wasn't fair. He shouldn't be an international referee anymore. I wish someone from Poland was referee for England:) Such a great mistakes cannot be forgiven.
Ela, Wrocław, now London
Euro08 is Howard Webb's debut, therefore he wants to look tough to SCORE with UEFA + the hosts. As for the penalty, it was an awful piece of refereeing, mostly becasue of the selective penalising + that prior decision to repeat the free kick - laughable! As a professional, Ref Webb is a big joke.
Valdeq, Zielona Gora, Poland
40 mln people hate him for one decision!
Kasia, Poznań, Poland
People... it's a game! A point was a deserved reward for both teams. Poland had one decent chance and took it, Austria dominated for most of the game. In the spirit of fair play, this was a fair result. Quit saying how much you hate Howard Webb. He's a great referee. Grow up!
Karl, St Albans, England
Shame!!!! Webb?? Why?
Kasia, Poznań, Poland
to Eric:Pulling down is a foul. Yeah so then there should be about 12 penalties each match, more or less after every free kick and every corner executed. Plus there is also shirt pulling going on from the offenisve player so who is to say that you shouldn't give a foul the other way
Szczepan, Katowice, Poland
The Poles played awfully, especially in the first 30 minutes, and then they still couldn't score, though they were a better team for 60 minutes. Guerreiro was clearly offside when he scored. It was the first big mistake made by mr. Webb.
Krzysztof Buck, Zielona Góra, Poland
But I can't understand how an ENGLISH referee could gave a penalty in 93rd minute in a situation, that was clearly NOT a foul even for an european ref. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they play really harder in English League than in any other league in the world? Webb is a disgrace to England.
Krzysztof Buck, Zielona Góra, Poland
Are we really scraping the bottom of the barrel to be sending such pseudo- refs to Euro 08 ? Would you like to see a Pole refereeing any English game in a major competition Howard`s way? Howard Webb being a cop is not much of a cop as a ref. Mr Krankl, it is high time one had one`s eyes tested
Mark
Mark, Breslau,
First, would you call it a foul if it happened in England, where it's normal?
Second, I doubt that there's an offside if the ball is shot on goal (it was not a pass to Guerreiro).
James, London,
everyone knows that when you call a penalty in the 92 min. it has to be a very clear foul. Players pulling on jerseys is nothing out of the ordinary. Mr. Webb effectively robbed Poland of a victory in such a crucial game. He should be sent home cause he's obviously incompetent, biased or both.
Luke , Ottawa , Canada
One clear penalty not given for Austria, off-side goal for Poland. But infact our team played better against Croatia and Poland as we expected.
Poland will go for the Euro in 4 years at home!
Peter, Graz, Austria
I'm not a football fan but I had misfortune to watch that game. That's a real tragedy!!! The outcome should depend only on players. Something must be done in the future to stop referees from making such mistakes. I'm still at shock!!!
Ela, Szczecin, Poland
Calm down ! The only fraud I've witnessed was the offside goal that was given for Poland ! The penalty was hard but there's no argument about that you can give it ! Proedls shirt was a meter away from his body and as I can remember the referee warned the Polish defender a few seconds before !
Jaques, Brussel,
offside goal and two false penalty-decissions! not a good day for webb! austrian team deserved the draw because of the first 30 minutes
speckman, pusarnitz,
-poland scored from clear offside
- a clear penalty for austria (47th min) - not given
- penalty given in added time - a joke.
to sum up: two weak teams and and terrible performence of mr. webb as to many mistakes.
Mariush, Manchester,
The penalty given in the last minute of injury time was a kind of shock. Lineker was right saying that had referee been more consistent he should have given a penalty after every corner or set piece (thus on average there should be 10 penalties in every premiere league game had -"Webb rule" ).
Piotr, Wroclaw, Poland
I am not watching this Euro for referees any more, I guess Webb couldn't get a nice Polish plumber and yesterday he made even with this sad fact. PITY! Kienast did the same thing as Lewandowski. Shame that it is a refereee who scored yesterday :-( Pity for football.
Tom, Camberley, UK
And if it really was a foul by Lewandowski, in every EURO match there should be over 10 penalties. We didn't deserve to win this match, but it shouldn't be a ref's decision. Greetings to every true football fans
Krzysztof Buck, Zielona Góra, Poland
its a scandal !!!!!!!!
f... HOWARD WEBBB!!!!!!!!
im kill you muthafucker!!!
dante, Warsaw, Serbia
To Roger Tilbury,
At the same time an Austrian player pulled a Polish guy behind the two players involved in the foul in the same way. Moreover, before the free kick a Polish player was hit in the face by an Austrian, which the referee pretended not to see.
Mike, Poland,
If the people complaining about Webb understood football they would realise that pulling an opponents shirt is a foul and if in the area is a penalty. Simple as that. Well done Ref. for doing what should have been done years ago.
Stuart, Manchester,
to all the whingers here...
the polish opener was clearly offside, the foul on ivanschitz was a penalty, so instead of blaming the ref for the draw you should thank him.
and it doesn't matter if a foul in the box happens in the first or last second of the game. if it is a foul it's a penatly.
Hans Krankl, Cordoba,
1. the question is: foul or not
2. pulling down is a foul
3. the referees were informed to inflict a penalty for that
4. the question is not: does another referee decide diverse
5. bad luck for Poland, the Austrian were lucky
6. do'nt worry - things change (we know)
Eric, Zemendorf, Austria
Maybe if all referees started giving penaltys then this shirt pulling would stop.Im happy to see 12 penaltys each match untill the players get it through their thick skulls that it is spoiling the game and is against the rules.
Toni, oxford, UK
It's amazing! Mr Webb was sick or blind! Jesus Christ..he is not really British referee. Howard Webb I hate you!!!!
Arthur, Silesia, Poland
Webb shouldn't have called the penalty kick. It was questionable in the first place AND it was the last minute of the game. Apparently, he wanted to help the host. That's all. Apart from the first 30 minutes, Polish team played better and they didn't deserve such a result.
Eve, London, UK
Austria played good football until Guerreiro scored. After that they started to... um... I don't know what were they doing, but it was definatly NOT austrian football.
We shooted offside goal, they had penalty kick without foul. I think 1:1 is fari result.
Thanx to Artur Boruc, great goalkeeper :]
Leszek, Gdynia, Poland
"Austria had deserved 3 points, not only 1." - you had deserve through you had paid so much. Sorry but have you seen the same match? - It has been set since beginning, when Austria team was unable to do anything. Austria team would not be able to shot without Howard Webb 'help'.
Mateusz, Warszawa, Poland
Seems that this referee did nothing as seeking a pretext to give penalty the Austrian for the last 15 minutes. Silent about ignoring fouls of Austrian provoking Polish. Why did not he give penalty for far clear foul in the 47 min. but did give in the last moment when nothing can be done about it ?
Michael Goldmeier, Munich, Germany
I can't believe what everyone here is saying about the referee. It was a clear penalty and the referee was brave enough to give it. End of story.
If the same thing had happened at the other end of the pitch, the Polish fans would agree it was a penalty.
Graham Crewe, Salzburg, Austria
An Austrian player was pulled to the ground by his shirt in the penalty area. Will those outraged Poles please explain why that is not a penalty? The fact other refs haven't got the guts to award these penalties is irrelevant. Read the laws of football and you will see it should be a penalty.
Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
The question is how would you react if ref punished your team with penalty in the dying minute of additional time?
The answer is obvious from my point of you. Total shock. I expect 10 - 15 penalties in every game form now on. Beside Austria is still in the tournament that means party is still rolli
zibi, Olawa, Poland
Stupid Howard. Euro2008 is corrupt.
Xavier, Barcelona, Spain
Guerreiro was offside as he was offside as the ball was kicked by his team-mate, whether he was the intended target or not. It could only be onside if the balls initially played by an Austrian player with him in that position. And any player who tugs in the box after the referree warns him? Fool
Jim Smith, newcastle, uk
And what about Golanski's foul on Ivanschitz in the 47th minute? Webb should have awarded a penalty for that one - and the Austrian team that played a great first half would have won the game!
Rapidhammer, Vienna, Austria
Truly it was real justice after this big chances, the offside-goal & the not given penalty after the foul @ Ivanschitz in the early second half.
Austria had deserved 3 points, not only 1.
But now Germany will struggle. ;-)
Gerald, Vienna, Austria
Big THX Mr.Webb!!!!!!!!!You are the successor Pierluigi Collina!!!We will remember.
Voynar, Lubomierz, Poland
I wonder why the British referee hates the Poles so much... lack of professionalism and shame for all Britain...
Ania, Poznan, Poland
incredible, indeed.
A referee (& linesman; incidentally: both British) who hand a 100% offsite goal; who DON'T call a clear penalty (47th min); but guiltily call a -much less, granted- case in the 93rd min
When will soccer start using quaint old video for a tad more objectivity-this is a mockery
Frank, NY,
scoring offside goals is a norm, it happens, but calling an out of the blue penalty in the last seconds of the game during a tournament... I can hardly find words to comment. Are there any ways to protest with UEFA?
Przemek, Kraków, Poland
If Howard Webb made such a decision in the English premier league he wouldn't refree in the next couple of games, I am sure of that...
Marcin, Warsaw, Poland
Unbelievable! Mr. Webb, Austrians' 12th player,, shame on you!
Bartosz, Sosnowiec, Poland
Guerreiro was offside, but Saganowski was shooting at the goal, and not passing a ball to him. Guerreiro got the ball from the Austrians, so there is nothing to talk about.
However, there is much to talk about the penalty. The Austrian defender felt his shirt was being pulled down, and simple dove.
Irek, Kraków, Poland
I think you have not seen Poland´s offside goal.
sigi, tulln, austria
That was a fraud and EURO 2008 sponsors should join the protest that is already stirring, although its early morning.
There will be blood if Webb's bought decision is not cancelled and 3 points are not awarded to Poland, with all the fair-play that Sports should be about.
Tee, Birmingham, UK
actually Poland scored an offside goal and Austria unjust penalty. But doing everything for Austria to score hurts the professionalism of the referee
Lukas, Warsaw, Poland
If you have more referees like Howard Webb - God bless Britain!
Jurek, Tarnów, Poland
Poles should boycott last match. It`s a scandal. I can`t even imagine what Polish fans feel now. It should be last match in career of Webb.
Joe, London, UK
H. WEBB- the most inefficient, the most stupidest referee I've ever seen. EURO is not a event for him. He stole Poles victory, he sold us...
tomek, wrocław, POLAND
this penalty was simply outrageous! i really hope, that this was webb's last game at international level. there's not much more to say - worst performing man on the peach that day was the referee...
fabyo, barcelona,
