Best goal
Russia’s second against Holland. Marvellous run to the byline by Andrei Arshavin and inch-perfect cross to the far post for Dmitri Torbinski to score
Best save
Gianluigi Buffon to repel Adrian Mutu’s penalty and keep Italy alive against Romania. Going the wrong way, Buffon improvised a save of the highest class
Best quote
‘If Gattuso personifies the spirit of the Italy team, then I’m a priest’ – Luis Aragones, Spain coach
Tactical masterclass
Russia’s Guus Hiddink humbling Holland. Eat your hearts out, England
Comeback kings
Turkey, 2-1 down after 87 minutes, hitting back to beat the Czechs 3-2
Ground-swallow-me-up moment
Petr Cech, ‘the world’s best goalkeeper’, throwing in Turkey’s equaliser
Whoops, there goes the reputation
Italy’s Luca Toni made Emile Heskey look like Geoff Hurst
Moment of madness
France’s Eric Abidal getting sent off for flattening Toni. No barn door was at risk from the Italian’s banjo
Starburst
Russia’s Andrei Arshavin [they do say most prefer waxing]. Stellar against Holland, Arshavin, inset, was anonymous against Spain
Moody Rolex bad timing award
Luiz Felipe Scolari announcing he was quitting after Euro 2008 to join Chelsea. Portugal never won again
Biggest bottler
France’s Lilian Thuram, who dropped out of the vital match against Italy because he was ‘not mentally right’
Good riddance
Italy and coach Roberto Donadoni, after unwelcome echoes of catenaccio
Biggest embarrassment
The host broadcaster was sunk by an electrical storm on Wednesday, losing transmission for lengthy periods, at home and abroad, as Germany v Turkey reached its exciting climax
Ken Bates warm welcome award
Swiss press ‘volunteer’ in Zurich who, glancing at your correspondent’s accreditation badge, sneered: ‘English? What are you doing here?’ The overheated response? ‘We’ll remember that come next season’s Champions League’
Worse than Selhurst Park
Getting to Basle’s stadium by public transport. What a nightmare
Bane of the tournament
‘Tourists’ in the press box, never actually writing anything but snapping everything and everybody with their phone cameras. One took pictures of herself waiting in line for press tickets
Strange priorities
See previous. The Sun and the Sunday Telegraph were among those denied tickets for certain matches while Korean, Japanese and Colombian journalists were given preference. All right, England weren’t here, but it is the European Championship

Caipirinha. A rum-based mind-blowing concoction that comes from Brazil
Worst drink
Any Swiss beer, aka cats’ pee
Friendliest fans
The Swiss, all smiles and alcoholic bonhomie
Worst boors
The all-singing, all-insulting Germans. Are they England in disguise?
Tedious sideshow
Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid
Alchemist’s award
Turkey’s Fatih Terim. How did ‘Imparator’ [The Emperor], as he is known, make so much of so little, when he had half a team either injured or suspended?

Cat, Washington. Rum is also made from sugarcane so it's almost the same thing.
guido, New Orleans,
What is it with you English people that you have to pour derision upon Germany on every possible occasion?
You did not participate because your team did not qualify, get over it without insulting us all the time...
Ilja, Sliema, Malta
Caipirinhas aren't made with rum, they're made w/ a Brazilian licquor called cachaca, made from sugarcane. They are, indeed, delicicious however.
Cat, Washington, DC, USA
The Telegraph has Pavlychenko as their "Euro Dream Team" forward as opposed to Villa. I agree entirely with you, Pavlychenko, although he created some great opportunities and played some very good football, squandered way too many chances.
dom, Leeds,
Dave, Shenyang, China
Dave - he also said "are they England in disguise". The English press and public has done nothing but enjoy, admire and be positive about this competition while lamenting that England are not good enough at present. Would be nice for same humility to be returned.
DW, Beijing, China
Calling Lilian Thuram the biggest bottler is harsh. Surely you know that his signing to PSG has been put on hold because of a potential diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, the not-so-uncommon cause of sudden death in footballers that has already claimed the life of his basketball playing brother.
Paul, Tunbridge Wells,
"Worst boors" - unsurprising that you had to get Germany in there somehow, particularly in a negative.
What about "greatest triumph for football" - England not involved, bringing their usualy cocktail of furniture throwing, bigoted, xenophobic fans all served up by over-optimistic pundits.
Dave, Shenyang, China
Thank you. It is very interesting to know another point of view.
Tatyana, Penza, Russia
