Arsenal broke their hoodoo against Bolton Wanderers when they triumphed 3-1 after extra time in their FA Cup fourth-round replay last night. After three successive defeats at the Reebok Stadium, Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, was thrilled finally to emerge victorious from one of his least profitable venues.
Wenger and Sam Allardyce, his opposite number, have not enjoyed the most cordial of relationships in recent years, but, after a helter-skelter match, the sniping subsided. If not quite a love-in — it was Valentine’s Day, after all — at least the rival managers could pay respect to their opponents.
“It was an electric game with exceptional pace and I can’t believe the amount of chances we had,” Wenger, whose side play Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, said. “We have seen some superb football tonight and both sides went for it.”
Arsenal missed two penalties, through Gilberto Silva and Júlio Baptista, but still had enough in reserve to fend off Bolton’s late fightback. “Who would believe it?” Wenger said. “Two Brazilians missing penalties. I can’t believe it. But even though we didn’t seem to be able to finish the game off, we responded well to those setbacks and it was still a good performance. We also responded well in extra time and we showed a lot of maturity. But as long as it was only 1-0 to us, Bolton were always going to be a threat.”
In the prematch build-up, Allardyce claimed that Wenger used mind games by encouraging his players to accuse their opponents of time-wasting, thus putting pressure on the referees. However, Wenger refused to rise to the bait. “No, I do not know about these psychological things,” he said.
“I felt that the way we approached the game was perfect. I don’t think there was any psychological handbrake in our heads. Maybe we wanted to force the ball too much.”
Allardyce has had an advantage over Wenger since the Frenchman’s arrival in the Premiership 11 years ago. In 14 meetings in league and cups, Arsenal had won only four times. However, Allardyce had to concede second best last night and he did it with good grace.
“That was one of the most bizarre cup-ties of all time,” Allardyce — whose central defender, Tal Ben Haim, was sent off in extra time — said. “We had missed three good chances before they scored their goal and then we hit a post in extra time.
“But I have to give Arsenal credit for their second goal. It was a great run by [Jérémie] Aliadiãre and a terrific finish from [Fredrik] Ljungberg. That was right out of the top drawer. You can’t do much about that.
“In fact, it was a terrific game of football all round. Sadly, it wasn’t us who came out on top. But at least we’ve shown that we can compete with the big boys even when we’ve got a few of our better players out injured.
“We can also get back to the main job, which is trying to cement our place in the Uefa Cup by a high finish in the Premiership. We’ve got the team to do that and at least we can concentrate on that now.”

One bad game doesn't mean Baptista is a donkey. Also, I didn't think Diaby played that well as he misplaced one too many passes.
Anyway, I don't think that Arsenal won because they've suddenly found confidence but rather I believe that they repected the so called weaker opposition. Let's hope they keep that frame of mind on Saturday.
David, Poole,
I just think its time people learn to accept defeat. In all ways, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal outwitted and outmanuevered Bolton's bullies, look at the midfield of Rosicky, hleb, Diara and the young Denilson who would only be18 next week, as against, the spitting Diouf, Thrity something year old Speed, Andranik, Campo and others.
Let Bolton go back and restrategise, so that by the time they come back to the Emirates for their last match against the gunners these season, it would not be worse for them
And to members of the big four, whoever wants to go away with the sheild can do so these season, 07/08 surely belongs to these young crops.
Whoever has an ear, let him LISTEN.

Every team has one of those days when even an open goal can be missed, but I can't remember the last time prolifigacy of this rate was achieved by a victorious team. Needless to say, no Champions League opposition will allow Arsenal to get away with this much incompetence in front of goal. Was it only match nerves, I wonder? Mine certainly were as an Arsenal fan.

It seems like week by week arsenal are growing , not so much in ability but as a belief in themselves , that they now have the character to win under all conditions . yes they have great quality , but now they're starting to realise that , and now they don't let the inferior teams who rely on rough tough tactics to take the steam out of them . Let Gallas come back to shore up the defense and let CHELSEA AND UNITED enjoy this season because i feel like they will be looking up table this time next year

wow! what a game it was fantastic. we deserved th win and now many people can stup up about we been afraid of Bolton.
well done lads
julia, london,
IT was a great game to watch but as usual Arsenal keep it interesting by failing to bury the opposition. 1-5 is a bit silly because Bolton had a couple of close things in goal-mouth scrambles and obviously we would not have scored 2 in ET if the game was up at 90 mins. But in terms of good chances I recon 2-4 would be about right.
Baptiste was woeful last night and i doubt if he is Wenger material, but he is a direct kind of impact player. His cross for the winner v Wigan was a classic driven ball in- poor Rosicky could hardly get out of the way, it bounced off his head!
Cappaddona, London,
Arsenal outclassed bolton all match even when we didn't attack well we made soure they didn't by defendeding well they defended rubbish. denilson had a wicked game as did diaby, rosicky, hleb, adebayor, clichy, aliadiere and almunia.
eddiey, bedford,
Overall a great performance from Arsenal, but I can't agree more with John from Birmingham regarding how poor Baptista was, I didn't see him make one good pass all night, for a big lad he was getting brushed off the ball too easily, and once I saw it was him taking the second penalty I already knew he's miss! Thought Rosicky, Adebayor, and Clichy were absolutely superb, and Gilberto did a wonderful job at centre back. also Almunia's handling was excellent. Can't see us having too much trouble against Blackburn at the Emirates on Saturday, although after 120 minutes of football I think some squad rotation is necessary.
Nigel Armsby, London, England
Football and the FA cup was the winner last night. Thats a bit cheesy but it was a great game of football for a change. The importance that has been placed on Arsenal beating Bolton also emphasizes Bolton's achievements over the past 5 years.
As for a 1-5 drubbing...whilst being fairly futile hypothesizing over incidences and alternative results in football games, if Arsenal had scored the penalty, it would have been 1-2, and the game wouldn't have gone to extra time, hence no further 2 goals or another missed penalty.

Denilson - what a star, another world class midfielder under the age of 20. Drool Drool, can't wait until next season, and Diaby's back.
Jac, Pwllheli, Wales
A great result, but is this the end for Baptista? One outstanding element of last night's match was how poor Baptista was for much of the game. His passing was off, his decision making was wrong at crucial moments and his goal scoring ability, well, he threw away 2 maybe 3 clear chances in the first half alone. I appreciate his enthusiasm and desire to stay with Arsenal, but I think Wenger will be sending him back.
John, Birmingham,
This game exemplified a few important things:
1. Excellent technique, team play and sportsmanship win games
2. Psychology and football are two different things. Neither Allardyce or Wenger are psychologists.
3. If you think psychology is about 'mind games' then you are probably working with 'wanna be psychologists'. Real psychologists exercise ethical, professional knowledge, judgement and skills.
Kairen CUllen, London, UK
Congratulations to the Wenger and the industrious Gunners. I am glad this hoodoo talk has been laid to rest and that Arsenal have shown that they have the skills, the ambition and the commitment to get in there among the very past. Not that that was in doubt really! But most importantly, they have progressed to the next round. I followed the game online because I aware from a TV here in the US and at work. At least once I saw Wenger's lineup, I felt he had played the best psychological game over Alladyce by not have Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas and Jens Lehmann from the team. It is almost impossible to find a defender in PL who has not played against TH in England. So they have known what to do to him abeit with limited success in the past. And of course Cesc needed a break while JL needs to stay focused with so big games coming up. Overall Arsenal keep growing and this result speaks louder than the Reebok crowds can be!
Ben K, Woodbury-St Paul, MN-USA
I don't think Big Sam has any right to accuse others of mind games this and an over-physical approach tolerated by sympatheic referees has been the main reason for Bolton's recent ascendency over Arsenal. Although I don't blame him in a way for trying to make a defeat into a moral victory the fact remains that Arsenal outclassed Bolton in the first half despite having fielded a largely second string inexperienced side. Conversion of those penalties would have resulted in a 5-1 reverse at home- hardly evidence of competing with the big boys.
Goonergerry, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
I think it was a great game that could have gone eitherway. I think this is the ROMANCE in the FA cup.
Cheers to you all.
Latigo, Kampala, Uganda
It was a great cup tie, and hopefully both clubs will show cordial respect to each other in future meetings, mixed with the appropriate bitter rivalry.
I can't remember the last time Arsenal missed two penalties and an open goal. Congrats to the ref too, who helped the game flow.
Ashley Dreher, London,
this was real beauty and the beast stuff, hleb was very good him and rosicky have great quick feet. denilson impressed me but ran out of steam, diaby played very well as did clichy who is excelling n ow he has his chance i dont think i've ever seen a quicker team in world football, but as usual our killer instinct was lacking. good refereeing although ben haim should have been yellow carded for the tackle on hleb in the first half.
peter, bedford, beds
David, from warwick, only your football knowledge appears 'laughable' On my reckoning perhaps the only players of note that were missing from the team that played Wigan was Fabregas, Henry and Lehmann. Bolton had their own injuries as well, hence Campo playing at right back, which Arsenal did well to expose. As a Bolton fan I was proud of the way we kept battling till the end despite Arsenal paying some fantastic football at times. It was a great cup tie in which Arsenal deserved to go through and I wish them all the best for the rest of the competition.
Dave, Zurich, Switzerland
I went through every emotion last night but it turned out ok in the end!
Bring on Blackburn.
lee riggs, Swindon, Wiltshire
If it wasn't for Baptista, Arsenal would have crucified a lacklustre Bolton side. The weak link has got to go at the end of the season, Wenger may have different ideas unfortunately.
Will, Durham,
Great cup tie though played in good spirit even allowing for the sending off.
I thought ref Chris Foy had a really good game as well - couldn't fault any of his 'big' decisions (two pens and the sending off)
Brian , Warwickshire,
Utter rubbish from Fat Sam. He's not competed with the 'big boys' on the night. Rather he's lost to the Arsenal kids. Laughable.
David, Warwick,
Fantastic win
