Arsène Wenger has identified this as the season for his young players to grow from boys into men, and this usually angst-ridden process will be well worth watching. Arsenal’s unbeaten start continued with a clinical demolition of one of the most fancied teams in the group H match at the Emirates Stadium last night.
Robin van Persie, the forward who scored the second of Arsenal’s three goals, said that his team “are playing football from a different planet” after a seventh win in eight matches this season. “It’s nothing to do with age, it’s to do with quality,” he said.
Seville carry considerable pedigree after winning the Uefa Cup in each of the past two seasons, but this comprehensive defeat was enough to make them pine for a return to that level. With a combination of pinpoint passing and impeccable control, Arsenal dominated from first whistle to last and could have won by more than the goals scored by Cesc Fàbregas, Van Persie and Eduardo Da Silva.
Juande Ramos, the Seville coach, could at least return to Spain with the knowledge that he is well qualified to manage Tottenham Hotspur, having been humbled by Wenger. The Frenchman could afford to be gentlemanly in conceding that the scoreline was harsh on Seville, but he showed his relentless perfectionism by referring to the two league points his side dropped away to Blackburn Rovers last month.
“It may be a bit unexpected by you, but to start well in the championship and against Seville is nearly perfect,” he said. “But 3-0 is a bit flattering.”
Seville are one of the teams whom Wenger enjoys watching on television and now he must wish he could play them every week, too. Ramos sent his side out for the first Champions League game in their history in an attacking 4-4-2 formation, and were made to pay for their naivety.
As usual, Fàbregas was the pivotal figure, opening the scoring and playing the crucial ball for the other goals, but Arsenal are now more than a one-man team this season. Mathieu Flamini has developed into a genuine holding midfield player with the potential to match his celebrated compatriot, Claude Makelele, Alexander Hleb’s distribution no longer does him a disservice and there can be few strikers who are more of a handful than Emmanuel Adebayor.
Even Manuel Almunia was less jittery than usual, making a smart save from Frédéric Kanouté in the 43rd minute in the visiting team’s one real chance to get back into the game.
Seville started strongly, with Jesús Navas cutting in from the right to shoot narrowly over from 25 yards in the sixth minute, but Van Persie and Flamini both brought good saves from Andrés Palop before Fàbregas opened the scoring in the 27th minute.
Federico Fazio’s poor clearance was collected by the Spain midfield player and after intelligently creating space for himself, he aimed a speculative shot from 25 yards, which was deflected into his own net by the arm of Julien Escudé. Although the initial shot appeared to be going wide, it was difficult to begrudge Fàbregas his sixth goal of what is shaping up to be a remarkable season.
Having likened him to Paul Scholes and Michel Platini already this season, Wenger must be running out of complimentary comparisons. “It shows as well how much confidence plays a part in his game, as last year he couldn’t score and now he can’t stop scoring,” he said.
Flamini’s industry was rewarded when he played a crucial part in Arsenal’s second goal, with his busy run down the left winning the free kick through which they doubled their lead in the 59th minute. Fàbregas’s cross was flicked on by Bacary Sagna at the near post and Van Persie provided the crucial touch with his right foot for his third goal of the season.
Arsenal would have scored more if Adebayor’s finishing skills matched his impressive approach play, although Eduardo added a third in injury time as shouts of olé rang around the stadium.
