Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has escaped further sanction from Uefa following his one-match touchline ban in the Champions League.

Wenger was forced to watch the final Group H game against Steaua Bucharest from the stands at Emirates Stadium as punishment for confronting the fourth official during the 3-1 away defeat by Seville.

Europe’s governing body could have extended that sanction to the first leg of Arsenal’s last-16 match, as they did with Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard for a similar offence. However, Uefa’s control and disciplinary body have today ruled a one-match ban, which has already been served, will suffice.

Wenger remonstrated with Reinold Wiedemeijer, the Dutch fourth official, after being angered by apparent play-acting from Jesús Navas, the Seville winger. Wenger watched the final minutes from the tunnel instead of moving to the stand as he was asked.

It is understood the Frenchman stated in his defence that there were reasons he was unable to move to the stands.
