Arsene Wenger believes Eduardo da Silva will make a full recovery from the horrific injury he sustained against Birmingham City on Saturday.
The Arsenal manager hopes the Croatian forward will bounce back from his broken leg and dislocated ankle, an injury which many thought could end his career.
The Brazilian born striker is recovering at home following a operation to repair the damage he sustained in a challenge with Martin Taylor, the Birmingham defender.
"The first signs are good," said Wenger. "The first problems that could happen are infections and, on that front, it looks good." Asked if Eduardo would make a full recovery, Wenger replied: "We think so."
Meanwhile, Wenger has described the death threats that Taylor has received in the aftermath of the incident as "idiotic". The Arsenal manager brushed off suggestions that he should feel some responsibility for the reaction following an emotional post-match outburst in which he claimed Taylor should never be allowed to play professional football again.
However, Wenger later softened his stance and claims he has not contributed to the vicious reaction directed at Taylor.
"I am responsible for what I say but I came out and retracted what I said. I didn't want to go overboard. I take that responsibility," Wenger said. "But people who make death threats have to feel responsible for what they do. It is idiotic and not accepted but I do not want to be responsible for that."
While Wenger is willing to accept Taylor's claim that he didn't mean to hurt Eduardo, he feels the foul was the inevitable result of a long-held belief in the game that Arsenal can only be beaten if they are roughed up.
"If it is a pure accident you cannot change anything but all the numbers are available," Wenger said. "I do not want to single one incident out but I believe there are some teams that commit more fouls than others.
"There is a consistency there. On our side we just try to be fair and after that we just want the right protection from the referees. If a team commits three times more fouls as the other team, there is three times the chance that an accident like that will happen.
"I would just say one thing. In the last three years we have been the team who has been fouled the most in the league, we have been the team who have made the least fouls and we have been the team punished more than any team in the league. I do not want to go into what is right or wrong. We try to play in a fair way. I do not ask for any special treatment at all. We don't have to find an answer, it is the referees who need to find an answer."
Wenger hopes his young team will put a difficult fortnight behind them and get back to winning ways against Aston Villa on Saturday.
"The response from our team will be positive. We have been deeply disturbed but I also feel something has been deeply touched within the team and I am confident that will come out in the game," Wenger said.
"We are not in a club where hate is part of the culture. We want to get the good things out of the game. We are focused on the magnificent sides of our club."

I hope Eduardo fully recovers, and soon too. The tackle makes British football look like one of the world's riskiest sport. The refs must step up to the challenge and protect players.
Arsenal play football worthy watching, even if you do not support the team.

Hey, Dan, apparently too many cooks are said to make the scots stew...well, you know the rest (or do you feign ignorance on matters only football-related); the perfect world you seem to be talking from doesn't seem to see any injustice in how the level-p[laying field of 11 v 11 is compromised by an over-aggresive attitude to competition.
sam, LONDON,
This is to Dan.
When he said the numbers are there. Don't you watch statistic of every match? Go there and see it will show you everything about fouls committed, cards received and all that.

" so is the issue not the rules themselves but the interpretation of the rules from the officials?"
A 3 match ban for almost amputating Eduardos leg. Its quite clearly that the rules that are the issue. - A 10 or 12 match ban for such reckless play may help,
oh but no! your honour Edurado was too quick thats why I broke his leg. Just like the guy driving reckless and knocks someone over, oh no your honour he was crossing the road too slowly. dummy!!

I'm a little tired of Arsene Wenger's whining over the "over physical" treatment his team receives on the pitch. When Wenger came to this country it was a lot more physical then it is now and he inherited a team that was among the most physical around. There are players in the league who get just as much rough treatment, but some of them adapt their game and physique to suit the robust nature of the English game. A prime example of this is Ronaldo.
Arsenal have resorted to kicking another team on more than one occasion this season, the Carling Cup 2nd leg against Spurs and more recently in the FA Cup against Man U and this from a team who have a pretty poor disciplinary record during Wenger's era.
I'm not defending dirty or cynical play and i believe Taylor's tackle was a result of Eduardo's pace and skill but the rules of the game already state the punishments for such acts, so is the issue not the rules themselves but the interpretation of the rules from the officials?
Dan, London, England
How can you make the least amount of fouls and be the team most punished? Where is he getting his 'foul' count from? Or is Arsene just referring to the fouls he saw? Either way, something doesn't add up...
Sophie, Liverpool,
Edwin, they are castigated because they are insufferable whingers, not to mention hypocrites, led by their manager. Teams like United and Chelsea get just as much physical provocation and abuse, but they neither react on the pitch or moan about it afterwards. They get on with letting their football do the talking.
Arsenal on the other hand seem to think that other teams should make life easy for them by standing back and admiring their pretty football. When they don't get their way, the pouting and the petulance starts, the result being that they often turn nastily physical themselves - not that Wenger would ever see anything. Witness their appalling attitude at Old Trafford. United played great football and Arsenal ended up trying to kick Nani into next week.

Well said Wenger. Arsenal have been victimised and unfairly slandered for too long - and the media are amongst the most guilty.
The overt skill of the team is cursorily dismissed as axiomatic whilst they are often castigated in the next sentence. If other teams and individual players sought to math their skills to innstead of attempting to 'take them out', the game would benefit hugely.
Edwin, Bucharest,
Shame on you FA for not protecting our skilful players!. Dont just sit there do something for the gppd of the game.
