Arsène Wenger will stick to his principles and resist the temptation to make wholesale changes to his squad this summer. The Arsenal manager is adamant that his young players have the talent and the temperament to win leading trophies and will give many of them the chance to do so next season.
Wenger will move to strengthen his squad this summer, but without pandering to the clamour for extravagant spending on big-name signings. Arsenal's board is willing to give him a £35 million transfer budget, but he is likely to focus his efforts on securing the best of the upcoming generation, with Hatem Ben Arfa, the 20-year-old Lyons winger, a top target. Wenger is also planning to give greater opportunities to young players already at the club, with Carlos Vela, the 19-year-old Mexican striker expected to be recalled from his loan spell at Osasuna and Fran Merida, the 18-year-old Spanish midfield player, who has been touted as the new Cesc Fàbregas, ready to step up from the reserves.
Wenger's stubbornness may be a source of frustration to some Arsenal fans, but he remains adored by the majority as well as retaining the backing of the board. The Frenchman has accepted the need to sign an experienced defender and there will also be significant departures, with Gilberto Silva and Jens Lehmann expected to leave.
Lehmann made as much clear yesterday with an outspoken attack on Wenger, who has picked him for only four Premier League matches this season, as well as mocking the ability of his replacement, Manuel Almunia. “I stayed here to win the Champions League and I saw good chances to play, but I have not had these chances and that makes me very angry,” Lehmann said. “For me, personally, it is a tragedy, particularly since I did not have a chance to prevent it.
“To be sitting on the bench behind somebody who only started to play when he was 30 is not funny. I am very angry. If the coach had spoken to me before the start of the season, then I would have been able to decide if I wanted to sit on the bench.”

Its it clear that Arsenal have an excellent attacking style and actually play football as the game was designed to be played. However all the great teams in England are measured by thier ability to win trophies. Clearly if you cannot hold a winning position for 8 minutes, as was the case against Liverpool then it must be the defence that is suspect. I would sell Senderos and Gallas, return Toure to central midfield and buy in the best possible central defender in the world - probably Micah Richards at whatever cost. WEnger may be a magician but he must realise that a young team cannot be expected to last for such a long season.

We desperately need a good goalkeeper and a centre-back,and if a new right winger who can shoot will be great.

I'm a gunner fan in Cali, I can't understand why Wenger refused to strengthen during the winter. Teams in every major sports league in the US (baseball, hockey, basketball and football) that recognize they have a (1) legitimate shot at the title, and (2) obvious holes to fill in their roster, always strengthen before the trade/transfer deadline. I'm not talking about spending "silly money" like ManU & Chelsea, but prudent buys to bolster the squad's playoff chances and address glaring weaknesses. With ManU & Chelsea continuiosly adding to their already deep squads, I fear the gap in overall squad talent between Arsenal and the other top 2 clubs (Liverpool situation is unclear) will increase. A stubborn belief in "nurturing" instead of "acquiring" will only go so far. How about Malouda or Ribery instead of Eboue or Rosicky? A good mix of young and experienced players and some badly needed senior leadership (other than Gallas!). We miss players like Pires and Seaman badly!

That makes sense better of spending 35M on top top quality 20-25 yrs old that will be able to gel with the current squad rather than intimidate them. A right winger and a top quality goalie. For some of the remaining 'easier' games we should give Theo a chance to play upfront, Abou to play next to Cesc or in his place, Denilson should be allowed to continue his education. Bring back Randall, Carlos and Fran to see if they can challenge for a spot for the Carling Cup next year.
Haider, London,
Just how much longer will Wenger retain the "adoration" of the fans & board - certainly his ridiculous stubborness to admit his failings... not strengthening the squad in january,, failing to acknowledge his "cover" defenders are simply not good enough , has cost Arsenal both League titles & European glory.
The question is if he fails to win either next year, then the time has come to suggest an early retirement. Use the money you have to buy quality defenders and one further striker.
Mike, London,
Glad to hear it, even if there is no quote to back it up. Football will not be immune from the credit crunch and I am far happier seeing Arsenal stabilise at the new stadium than going for short term glory a la Leeds United.
Sam , Arsenal,
Jens, for me personally it was a tragedy when you got yourself sent off utterly deservedly and stupidly in the first ten minutes of the Champion's League Final. You lost us the trophy, ruined the game and contributed to (subbed) Robert Pires leaving the club. I am balling my fist in my pocket as I send this!
