Arsène Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson rarely see eye to eye and yesterday was no exception, with the Arsenal manager refusing to accept that his team are out of the title race and his counterpart at Manchester United hinting that the Frenchman should throw in the towel.
Arsenal need to beat United at Old Trafford tomorrow, otherwise a season that promised so much will end in disappointment. Last week, Wenger was confident that his team could win two trophies but, after the Champions League defeat by Liverpool on Tuesday, the Barclays Premier League title is all his team have to play for. United are six points ahead of Arsenal with five matches to play, so victory is imperative for Wenger and his players.
“It will be the greatest achievement of my career if we win the title because we are swimming against the tide at the moment, but I still believe,” Wenger said yesterday. “For us, the game on Sunday is the game of the season. If we do not win this game, we have no chance.”
Wenger’s dream of a European and domestic double died at Anfield and, although he blames refereeing decisions for his team’s elimination from the Champions League, he is willing to accept his share of the blame if Arsenal fail to lift a trophy for the third consecutive season. Despite winning three titles in 11 years, Wenger has been criticised by some Arsenal supporters for not strengthening his squad during the January transfer window and for playing Kolo Touré out of position against Liverpool.
“I’m humble enough to accept I make mistakes and I will every year,” Wenger said. “I don’t mind that I’m questioned. I would prefer that I’m questioned rather than the players. I can handle that. I’m in a position where you have to accept being criticised. I don’t mind, but I have a fantastic belief in this team and I believe I will be proven right.”
Ferguson thinks that Arsenal need a minor miracle if they are to win the title. “It’s difficult for them because six points behind us and three points behind Chelsea with five games to go, that’s not a lot of leeway for them in the sense that they can’t afford to drop anything really,” the United manager said. “If I was in that position, I would be saying that we couldn’t afford to drop any points.”
Ferguson said that he sympathised with Wenger over Arsenal’s series of injuries, although he also suggested that the Frenchman has been treated more favourably in terms of media criticism than he would have been in similar circumstances.
Ferguson believes that Chelsea represent the greatest threat to United’s title ambitions and has expressed concern that Avram Grant’s team could have an advantage before their showdown at Stamford Bridge on April 26. United’s two Champions League semi-final ties against Bar-
celona fall three days either side of that match, whereas Chelsea play their first leg against Liverpool on April 22 and the second leg on April 30.
“Our fixtures are a bit more congested,” Ferguson said. “But there’s nothing we can do about that, I’m afraid. We have to prepare our players for the Saturday lunchtime fixture against Chelsea. We would prefer a better kick-off time for that, but we had a similar situation last year [for the derby match away to Manchester City] and that was refused, so there’s no point going down that road again.”
While United look forward to facing Barcelona and Thierry Henry this month, Arsenal have denied that they want to re-sign their former captain this summer, as suggested by reports in Spain. “That’s not something I’ve considered at the moment,” Wenger said. “I had him on the phone on Monday night and he seemed quite happy in Spain.”

Paul of Kensington-What utter nonsense!!
I'll begin by saying the only thing I agree with you on is that Arsene lets go of some players at 30 even when they still have a lot to give thus we miss that experience.
Would you have critised Gallas if he still played for Chelsea? IMO Carvalho is more instrumental in your defense than Terry
"..Do Eboue, Sagna, Clichy, Traoure, Diaby have the intelligence of Giggs, Finnan, SWP to come on & perform when cold? .."
Intelligence?? Cold???
What has a team of 11 Brits (3 lions in case you can't figure it out..) ever won in 42 years?? I take it most teams in the PL below 5th or 6th place have a higher proportion of British players-does that turn them into champions?
Hleb, Flamini, Fabregas are some of the most skillful midfield players in the trade-and as a Gooner I'll say the most crippling factor in our game is the lack of quality backup in each position.
You sound like a Chelsea fan-2 trophies in 50 yrs how impressive!

Unfortunately for Wenger his starting 11 are the only players he has. At this point in the season they are knackered and without any solid back-ups the only way is down. You cannot say that Adebayor is going to be up to Henry kind of finishing and Bendtner should consider his options in the summer.
Wenger also does not really add much value to the English game by not playing any English players. Arsenal is a top north London club with a great history and yet not single a starting English lad. Theo Walcott has potential but is bench warming.
The top brass at Arsenal should consider their options for a leader that can deliver the silverware, as the current regime is lacking in substance.
Fixed, London,
Wenger needs to buy in an alternative to Adebayor for next season. The striker has shown in the latter half of the season that he is no replacement for Henry.
Edwin, Bucharest,
If we want to ensure there is a balanced review of matches i would suggest that arsenal playing liverpool off the park for 30mins doesnt result in a deserving win as for the remainder 60mins liverpool took control other than for the odd scare. So on balance you could argue that liverpool played better over the 90mins and showed their brilliance by pressurising arsenal into submission in the last 10mins which arsenal couldnt do at the emirates. Thats the difference between winners and losers!

Hear Hear Robert!
Al, London,
"the Barclays Premier League title is all his team have to play for " !!!!
How many other teams would like to be in Arsenal's position .?Even without a trophy this has been an excellent season for a young team .Wenger is right to try to keep it together without bringing in a "star" name who may not fit in .Senderos comes under much criticism but I seem to remember one of Arsenal's greatest players being criticised & called "Donkey" in his early years . Senderos will improve .

I agree Robert. The other side of this is that during Arsenal's poor run, they lost only once in the league. We are the only team in the league to have 2 losses, the leaders have lost four times. This is why the result on tuesday has been so hard to take, there is not much more Arsenal could have done this season and to very likely come up empty handed is an huge injustice.
The reason why Arsene talks about the referee is that the Middlesbrough game had two bizarre offside decisions that went against Arsenal. If Middelsbrough's goal had rightly been ruled offside then they would not have kept 11 men in there own penalty area for the rest of the game. The gap would be 4 points at worst and the game on sunday would look a lot different. Also Hleb should have had a penalty against AC Milan.
Finally, luck is not smiling on Arsenal, The Middlesbrough goal was their first attack and almost their last in the game. What are the odds that keeps happening? Well it seems to be evens.

Time for Wenger to take a dose of medicine.
Arsene is a tremendous manger, un-rivalled talent spotter and alchemist in creating saleable assets - yet he seems to have been missing the point recently.
My best friend a Liverpool fan tells me Arsenal are the best team in the world and play the best football but I counter how come they haven't won the champs leauge under Wenger or a leauge title in what will soon be four years. To which he counters Chelsea's millions, bad luck, the Champs Leauge isn't that important.
But all of it is important because although Arsenal play pretty football they've lost the steel of their Petit/Viera years. Wenger used to mix seasoned players with raw potential but now seems determined to prove he can win all with potential alone.
He appears afraid to spend money for fear of not having an excuse for losing. Arsenal are not his personal experiment or a trial in economic theory, they are big club which needs to win the biggest tropies.

The problem with the hype that surrounds the Champions League and Premiership is that so much gets reported as black and white. Wenger is having to defend himself and his team as if they did something terribly wrong at Anfield. The fact is they played Liverpool off the park for 30 minutes while scoring a great goal and then conjured up another through the brilliance of a teenager -- and English teenager -- Wenger has nurtured. If the referee had opted not to give Liverpool a penalty -- and it must have been a 50-50 decision -- the odds were heavily on Arsenal defending the 2-2 score for the next seven minutes. In that case Walcott would have been praised to the skies as the greatest thing in football boots and Wenger would have been a genius. Benitez? Liverpool? They would have been rubbish. A balanced viewpoint is apparently beyond us in today's sensation-driven world.
Robert Ingham, Richmond, Virginia, USA
Wenger is lost, he dumps players as soon as they hit 30 & still refuses to play British men regularly. Answer this does Gilberto have the drive n passion of Gerrard or Scholes? Do Senderos, Gallas have a heart like Terry & Carragher? Are Hleb, Flamini, Fabregas prepared to mix it through our winters like Joey Cole, Gerrard, Hargreaves, Carrick or Lampard?
Do Adebayor, RVP have the strength to survive a harsh winter like Rooney or Crouch?
Do Eboue, Sagna, Clichy, Traoure, Diaby have the intelligence of Giggs, Finnan, SWP to come on & perform when cold?
Sometimes yes maybe, when teams do not play deep or when the conditions are perfect Arsene's foreign 11 will batter anyone. But when the season comes to the boil his mix of boys from everywhere, but the damp Island, simply crumble, it happens every year whether it be November, December or March!
Such a shame that such an intelligent scientist of the game missess the obvious. Play some brits, get a heart and success will follow.
