Arsène Wenger has poured scorn on AC Milan’s attempts to sign Emmanuel Adebayor by saying that they will be given short shrift if they even dare to utter the question. Adriano Galliani, the Milan vice-president, has named the Arsenal forward as one of the club’s leading transfer targets along with Didier Drogba, of Chelsea, and Dimitar Berbatov, of Tottenham Hotspur, but Wenger insists that the Togo striker is not for sale.
“If AC Milan are interested, he’s under a firm contract that we extended last year,” the Arsenal manager said. “They just have to call me and they’ll get the answer they deserve.”
Adebayor has three years remaining on his contract but the situation is complicated because he is seeking a pay rise after a magnificent season in which he scored 30 goals for Arsenal. The 24-year-old’s present deal is worth £35,000 a week, a modest salary given his standing as one of the top strikers in the world, and he is hoping to double his pay to secure his long-term future at the club.
“I’m very happy here,” Adebayor said. “Reports which suggest I have threatened to quit are rubbish. I love the club and the fans. We have had a good season, but next year we want to go one better by winning a trophy.”
Wenger also said that he is equally confident of keeping hold of Cesc Fàbregas, despite continuing interest from Real Madrid. Fàbregas seems destined to move to the Bernabéu at some stage in his career, but Wenger believes that he can keep hold of the Spaniard for the foreseeable future.
“Fàbregas will be at Arsenal next season,” Wenger said. “It looks obvious to me and there is no doubt in my mind. I know him well because I see him every day and his intelligence for football is fantastic to see at such a young age. I like as well, in a period when football goes more towards athleticism only, that he is a player.”
Wenger is at Euro 2008 working for French television, but will consider making signings on the back of the tournament, with one of his main targets, Samir Nasri, the Marseilles midfield player, in the France squad.
“I’m here with my chequebook so I won’t rule anything out,” Wenger said. “If I fall in love with somebody, why not, but we all know the big players. What we know about big championships nowadays is that we don’t discover players any more in big tournaments.
“You expect Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Franck Ribéry to stand out, but I’ll have an eye on Mario Gomez with Germany, [Karim] Benzema for France and [Luka] Modric in the Croatia team.”
Pascal Chimbonda, the Tottenham defender, has been released from police bail. The 29-year-old Frenchman was arrested last September for alleged conspiracy to defraud. City of London Police have not charged anyone in the investigation into corruption in football.
