Arsenal will step up their efforts to sign Xabi Alonso from Liverpool this week after Arsène Wenger’s team were outplayed by Fulham in the 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage on Saturday. Alonso wants to leave Anfield after falling out with Rafael BenÍtez, but the Liverpool manager is holding out for £16 million for the 26-year-old Spain midfield player.
Arsenal’s opening offer of £10 million was turned down three weeks ago, but after such a lacklustre performance, Wenger knows that he has to make a significant move in the transfer market if Arsenal are to be challengers for the Barclays Premier League and Champions League.
Lassana Diarra, Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb and Gilberto Silva have left the Emirates Stadium this year and Cesc Fàbregas’s hamstring injury forced Wenger to start with Denilson and Emmanuel Eboué in midfield against Fulham. “We lacked quality but when you lose a game it is not always a solution to buy,” Wenger said.
Arsenal have been linked with four midfield players this summer – Gareth Barry, of Aston Villa, Marcos Senna, of Villarreal, Gökhan Inler, of Udinese, and Alonso – but the Liverpool midfield player, who was in Spain’s Euro 2008 squad with Fàbregas, is Wenger’s No 1 target.
“Alonso would be perfect,” Fàbregas said. “He is my friend and apart from that he is a great professional.”
Alonso’s relationship with BenÍtez became strained when he discovered at the end of last season that his manager wanted to replace him with Barry. Matters came to a head during an angry confrontation before Liverpool’s Champions League qualifying match away to Standard Liège this month. Alonso is adored by many Liverpool fans, but he failed to impress during the 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield on Saturday.
Liverpool signed Alonso from Real Sociedad for £10.5 million four years ago and the Spanish club are set for a windfall if he leaves Anfield. Under the terms of Alonso’s transfer from Spain to Liverpool, Real Sociedad will receive about £5 million if Alonso is sold for less than £13 million and 20 per cent of the transfer fee if he leaves for more than £13 million.
Wenger has money to spend after a quiet summer in the transfer market. The Arsenal manager has spent about £18 million on Samir Nasri, Aaron Ramsey and Amaury Bischoff to boost his midfield options, but none of those players is the finished article.

It would be ridiculous to sell one of your best players to one of your main rivals. I know, lets sell a v good player to our competitiors who are struggling in the same position. IF, he sells him to Arsenal, he doesn't know what he is doing. But it is still a big if at this moment in time.

Liverpool are being incredibly unreasonable here. Surely they should let Alonso -who has been a good servant- follow his dream at Arsenal? It is downright selfish of them to hold on to the player by demanding such a ridiculously high transfer fee for his services.

Alonso would be perfect and probably allow us to hang on to Cesc for a couple of years more and give us a real shot at the title. So there is no logic to hang on to a couple of million pounds when we have champions league football hanging/ no cups in 3 years in the balance.
Stuart, London, UK
As a Fulham fan I purchased the Times today to read your normally excellent match report in The Game. Instead I was treated to a Arsenal eulogy (unquestionably a great team) with Fulham only mentioned in the 5th paragraph. There maybe a simple explanation - Mr Solhekol wasn't there!

Interesting speculation. Alonso was Liverpool's best player against Liege and Sunderland and is, including Gerrard, the best passer of the ball at the club. As a result of playing against Liege he is cup-tied in the CL until the knock out stages so how he is worth £16m to Arsenal is beyond me.

It's a very strange clause.

It was only recently that Arsene Wenger was described as a "cunning fox". He has no real intent on buying Barry but the rumours are out there to "frighten" Liverpool in losing him to Arsenal. His real target is Alonso but he will wait for Liverpool to buy first so he can negotiate at a low price.

Alonso, Fabergas, Nasri and Rosicky as a first choice midfield would be fantastic for Arsenal!!! Diaby, Denilson, Song, Ramsey, Walcott as a second string then Bischoff, Eboue, Wilshere as back up to all them and the midfield looks a lot better. I'd like to see Toure & Silvestre in defence!!!

Perhaps it's £5m for a sale below £13m, and then 20% of anything over £13m PLUS the base £5m?
It's seems a ridiculously generous sell-on clause, but who knows what was agreed if Liverpool were desperate to sign him at the time.
That may be why they're asking for such a high figure now...
John, London,
I totally agree with you, Matt. If thats the real scenario that would be awful negotiating by LFC - it should be the other way around surely?!
samrad, London,
Rafa needs to get rid of alonso sharpish, he was abysmal on saturday. he's the same as berbatov. if he doesn't want to be here, we don't want him around. contract figures look right, they were in the echo. sociedad must be laughing
elaine o'connell, witney, uk
So Real Sociedad would be due £5 million if Alonso was sold for £8 million, but only due £3 million if he was sold for £15 million. Does that seem a tad unlikely to anyone else?
