Arsene Wenger says footballers' private lives should have no impact on how they perform.
Asked about the "circus" that Rio Ferdinand said surrounded England's 2006 World Cup campaign, the Arsenal manager insisted only a player's performance is significant. "What is important is when the guy has the ball on the pitch that he makes a good pass and a good decision," Wenger said.
"If that is related to the long heels or the short heels which the girls wear in the street, then I am not a great fan of that and do not think that has anything to do with football."
Wenger, who once was approached to take charge of the national team, says the renewed confidence in the England team can have a ripple effect through the game. "I am happy that there is an optimism around the national team. You know better than I that it is all euphoria or all depression," Wenger said.
"I prefer to see the country with euphoria but you have to think that it is normal that England beat Kazakhstan at home and not abnormal that England beats Belarus. England has a good team and a good squad. I am glad that Capello does a good job."
David Beckham is reportedly considering a return to Arsenal to continue his training regime when the Major League Soccer campaign finishes later this year. Wenger allowed the midfielder to use the club's Hertfordshire facilities last year.
"I have not heard about that, but he is always welcome back," Wenger said, "His behaviour was spot on. He was a top level professional and he earned a lot of respect here."
