Debate: Time for Wenger to go?
Comment: Wenger open to scrutiny
Arsene Wenger has branded Stoke City's players "cowards" after critics questioned the bravery of his side.
The Arsenal manager launched an impassioned defence of his under-fire squad after suggestions they choked in the face of a physical performance from Stoke City on Saturday.
Arsenal suffered their third defeat of the season at the Britannia Stadium, where Theo Walcott was carried off with a damaged shoulder after being tripped by Rory Delap and Emmanuel Adebayor hurt his ankle after a full-blooded challenge from Ryan Shawcross.
Both players are now out of Arsenal's Champions League match with Fenerbahce at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow.
"I tell you they are brave," Wenger said of his players. "For me, you need to have more courage to play football when you know someone’s tackling you from behind without any intention to play the ball, with only one intention to hurt you and I can show you some tackles where I can prove what I say.
“The one who is tackling is not the brave one, for me the brave one is the one trying to play football.
“It happened at the weekend. Do you really feel that Delap tried to play the ball when he tackled Walcott or that Shawcross tried to play the ball when he tackled Adebayor off the pitch? All the players have been injured deliberately.
“To say that Walcott is not brave and the brave one is the player who tackles Walcott from behind - it’s just not true. It is something that I want to establish. The brave one is not the one who tackles from behind the player who tries to play football. That’s the coward.
“When you question the courage of my team, I’m sorry it’s not true. The team that tries to play football and respect the rules is for me the brave one.”
Wenger is feeling the pressure for the first time during his reign at the club, but he insists he is not panicking as he looks to get Arsenal's season back on track.
“I believe that when you lose a game you have to listen to many things,” Wenger said. “Some of them are right, many of them are wrong and it’s down to me to analyse what is right and what is wrong and I trust more what I see and what I feel than many different opinions.
“It’s more important for us to be calm, focused, let people talk and show on the pitch what we can do and I’m confident that we have the necessary strengths and quality and that we are united as a club and as a team – that will come out in the end.
“When you speak about listening to things, I read about my team not being brave".

Arsene does this every season - whinges and moans over the onfield treatment of Arsenals' angels whenever they start losing. You can see a tackle similar to Delaps in every premiere league game you watch - was unfortunate that Walcott fell awkwardly and damaged his shoulder. Hope he recovers soon.
jenny, dunedin, NZ
"I agree with Wenger, I watched this game and the player that injured Walcott never even got a yellow card!"
er, yes he did. he received a yellow card for a poor tackle. Walcott's injury was entirely incidental. He popped his shoulder diving full length...
Will, London,
FA should not act negatively on Wengers comments. Look at the number of players who are out because of malicious tackles. Eduardo, Roscky, and we all saw the tackles that are putting Adebayor and Malcot out. Wenger's voice must be loudly heard and respected. That will protect players from injury
Ndyetabura Hamisi, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
We tried to play tippy tappy football against a team that were not only up for it, but clearly had a more positive attitude towards the game. I'm an Arsenal fan and find none of the tackles particularly bad. Wenger and some of my fellow Arsenal supporters are embarrassing and need to get a grip!
Adrian Thomas, Camden, England
There was no mention of Adebayors waist high flying lunge on Shawcross in the first half. Football is a mans game, Arsenal should stick to playing non-contact friendlies against their ladies team if this is their attitude. Arsenal were a poor team with a poor attitude and got what they deserved.
Keiron Phillips, Wexford, Ireland
Yes.Stoke were dirty and the 2 challenges should have been penalised severely. This would have probably been the case had it been Sir Alec's team as other managers and refs are scared of him.But Arsenal need to be tougher, physically and mentally.
paul , Cardiff,
Yep Stoke are physical. However, they are my club and I love them to bits, we have come up to the most difficult division in the world and we have spent money on players that will help us win matches. Maybe next year we will have money and then we can buy someone who can keep it on the deck? he he
Tom, Stoke-on-Trent,
the ref was at fault for not sending off delap and shawcross. stoke play kick and rush 1970s style "football"poorly and wont survive a season in the premier league.good riddance to them when they drop back to the fizzy pop league.
ostevo, hualien, taiwan
Anyone who saw the game knows that Arsenal didnt create the chances we normally do. Stoke defended deep played physical and won. Stoke will play worse teams try to play football lose and be relegated in May. We wont win the league, but we'll enjoy watching good football for the rest of the season!!
neil, birmingham, uk
Teams have phases where several players are out for a fair time. Walcotts injury is more down to bad luck than the challenge itself. Im sure West Ham didnt complain like this when they lost their 1st team last season.
Ian, Liverpool,
Again this is just more proof that Wenger is a bad loser and just snaps back without thinking about what he's saying.
Sandi, Dublin, Ireland
Whilst I think Arsene's comments are a bit harsh, one thing that is important to note is the amount of serious injuries thar Arsenal players have incurred on the pitch as the result of ruthless tackles. Diaby, Eduardo, Adebayor, Walcott, Sagna to name just a few. Bit of a conincidence?
Rich, Sheffield,
Oh dear - spoken like a true (?) supporter - everything my team does is good, but eveything the other team does is bad - Wenger should go!
John, Bordeaux, France
Ok, let's have the debate. I've no idea if Wenger is right but the evidence is there. Charge him and let him defend himself. Did Eduardo IMAGINE that he'd broken his leg? Why is Britsh football so far behind many nations? Everyone likes kicking Arsenal, but what if Walcott cannot play for England
gaz, london,
Same old same old with Wenger. Bad winner, sore loser. Maybe he thinks his team shouldn't have to play other teams at all. Do some party tricks with the ball and win the Premier and Champions League that way. God forbid his team should compete against another team.
Sue, Xiaoshan, China
Arsene is correct. Stoke played in a soul-crushingly defensive way - although it's hard to criticise them for that, everyone knows they'd be left for dead otherwise - and intentionally played extremely physical. That's the kind of attitude teams always adopt when playing Arsenal. Ask Martin Taylor.
kita, Umeå,
@Mick from Henley-on-Thames - I didn't see Delap tackle Walcott's shoulder. It was a soft tackle and Walcott fell awkwardly on his shoulder. What game were you watching?
Maybe Wenger should think about adding some strength to that prepubescent team of his...
Victor Tavares, Toronto, Canada
IN tackle 3 above, Delap missed the ball by a good 2 - 3 yards. He is either way off the pace, or deliberately fouled Walcott as he burst into a dangerous position. I know which version I believe!
Andrew, London,
where is the physical inspiration for this team?
instead of standing up and digging in when need to, they prefer to whinge, have tamtrams and claim its all unfair,
like manager, like captain it would seem
David, Melbourne,
Arsenal Arsene...take defeat like a win ..with dignity ..dont end up like Keegan or Ferguson or Mourinho...take a look at your own players desire...They are getting Prima Donnas...maybe they couln`t handle the superb atmosphere.
Well played Stoke
Paul Stevenson, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire
Saying Stoke are rough is one thing (they are, it's a tough game); Saying they set out to deliberately injure someone is another. To make these comments about two players is unprofessional. Delap and Shawcross were guilty of nothing more than misjudged tackles (if anything at all).
Andy, Stoke-on-Trent,
The Arsenal PR machine in overdrive yet again. Arsenal are outplayed, lose the game and the opposition are automatically 'dirty'. I'm sorry, I forgot all other teams should allow Arsenal to play their 'beautfiful' football as is their god given right.
muhunthan paramesvaran, london,
Aww, they didn't let you play your game - poor man, poor gunners - back to whining then.......
Andy, Ipswich, UK
Shawcross has got off scot free with some vicious tackles including against Man City, and Arsenal. Wenger is correct in his assessment of Stoke.
Piers, Bournemouth, Dorset
I agree with Wenger, I watched this game and the player that injured Walcott never even got a yellow card!
william thomson, lincoln, uk
Wenger has plenty of players who frequently show no respect for the rules... Eboue and Van Persie spring to mind. He should get his own house in order before he makes silly comments about others.
Simon, London, UK
hahaha. Whinge Whinge Whinge, whine whine whine,.
So attempting to maim Nani is not cowardly?
Van Persie's barge on Sorensen is not cowardly?
Mat, Liverpool,
It is rather odd that the Saturday after Walcott gave an interview in which he mentioned having problems with his shoulder Delap targets him and injures his shoulder. It's even odder that this fails to get a mention in the press. But then perhaps someone should have stopped Walcott mentioning it.
Mick, Henley-on-Thames, UK
That's right Wenger you carry on throwing your toys out pf the pram. All you are doing is perpetuating the theory that Arsenal have no backbone. Let your players undermine that theory rather than making comments which only go to show what a bad loser you are.
Richard, Norwich,
Arsenal lost and this is sour grapes ,the shawcross tackle was a bit rough and maybe there might have been a little retaliation there from an earlier tackle where Adebayor "left his foot in " trying to injure shawcross himself but i guess arsene didn't see that one.Delap was just to slow on Walcott.
ian, stoke-on-trent, england
"All the players have been injured deliberately" Do you really mean that? Oh dear Mr Wenger, you really should think before you open your mouth.
Remember the retraction you made after you said that Martin Taylor deliberately broke Eduardo's leg.
John Reynolds, Kettering, UK
