William Gallas has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and dropped from the squad to face Manchester City at Eastlands tomorrow, according to the France Football website.
Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has punished the Frenchman for launching a verbal attack on his team-mates that revealed details of a dressing-room row at half-time of the 4-4 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Gallas, 31, had claimed that Arsenal's young players lacked courage, that the squad included a 25-year-old troublemaker and that he could leave if the club failed to win a trophy this season.
He added to the speculation over his future today by revealing that he wants to play in France. "It's true that I'd like to return to France for one or perhaps two seasons to finish my career," Gallas said.
"But if I go, it won't be to just anywhere. I'd go to a big club or nowhere at all. The choices look simple to me - it would be Marseilles, Lyons, PSG or, let's not forget, Bordeaux. PSG are a massive club and known everywhere."
Gallas said that he was attracted to the prospect of joining Claude Makelele, his former Chelsea team-mate, at Paris St Germain. "He's told me that he's pretty happy to be in Paris. He feels he's getting the respect he deserves from everyone.
"As far as Bordeaux, I really like the club and the region. I was a Jean Tigana fan when he played for Bordeaux. Their coach now is Laurent Blanc who I've never played for but who knows football off by heart and must be a good guy to lead you."
Nigel Winterburn, the former Arsenal defender, criticised Gallas for his outburst. "I'm very disappointed with Gallas' comments," he said. "We all know arguments happen at half-time and full-time in any game, not just at Arsenal, and they're dealt with inside the club.
"It doesn't need the captain to come out and tell the world players have fallen out - that can be good, it shows they care and are not prepared to accept defeat. He actually said one team-mate is being disruptive, which puts the suspicion of blame on four or five players. He hasn't come out and named the player."

give us a break gallas, just go .to blame others to leak goals when you are a full back is a bit much.

What does Mr Wenger expect of the player he appoints as captain? What authority is he given?
There are very few players that I can recall who one could tell were captain by their demeanour on the field.
I have never heard a journalist ask a manager these questions. Says a lot about journalists.

Let the whole French Legion follow. As an Arsenal Fan of 20 years, I am frustrate by Arsene Wenger's policy of not strengthening the team in key positions. He keeps going on about potential, potential and we do not seem to see this potential materialise. With Wenger, this is the best Arsenal can be!
Robert Piresh, London, UK
What?! he deserves it the captaincy...bad decision....Arsene is getting old...
Tai Ford, boston,
The thought of swapping the splendours of North London for dreary provincial Paris - the man must be completely insane! LOL
Tom Howard, Bordeaux, Paris
its a simple illusion trick. the problem isnt gallas and if it wasnt for his public outburst we would all be talking about wenger instead. wenger is the problem gallas is the scapegoat. wenger has got the team all wrong and lack of spending is showing. gallas has saved wenger at his own expense.
tim, london, uk
He had to go. It's sad-Roy Keane did something similar a few years ago and Fergie gave him the boot. I don't think he's a bad guy, just not suited to captaincy. He'll probably have to go in January.

Yes I think there is no doubt that something is very wrong at the moment. Two seasons ago I could talk about the spirit within the team with confidence - interestingly it was Van Persie who first made me pause, after an on-field incident.
Mr Wenger must have a captain who reflects his sensitivities.
Bryan Stanion, Aghios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece
He does not deserve to wear an Arsenal shirt let alone the captainś armband. Would Tony Adams have behaved the way this man over the last couple of seasons? Never...never never
Rob, london, UK
Gallas left Wenger with no choice. Apart from choosing the right captain, the question now is: should the ex-captain be allowed to see off the rest of his contract? (Not to mention whether he should be included in the 18-strong team)

In the U.S. when an athlete calls out his teammates in the media usually it is the only way to get their attention. If the player has a proven track record like Gallas more often than not it causes the team to step up and lose the complacency. Leadership is taking a stand even if it's unpopular.
James, Pittsburgh, USA
Any real lose to english football? Me thinks not!!
Matt, Plymouth, England
I would say get rid of him.
Whigning loser!
he does not deserve to be a captain.
An Arsenal Fan.

Wenger's decision to take the armband from gentleman Gilderto and hand it to Gallas will go down as one of his biggest blunders. For an organisation that talks alot about character and doing things properly, this was a major faux pas. It is obvious that there is no leadership in the dressing room.
