José Mourinho devoted the majority of a four-page interview in the match programme to explaining how “11 surgeries and eight traumatic injuries” cost Chelsea the Barclays Premiership title, a seemingly never-ending curse the manager believes could also scupper their chances in the FA Cup Final.
In typically dramatic fashion, Mourinho announced that he will struggle to find enough bodies to face Manchester United on Saturday, although it will be no surprise if at least some of walking wounded recover in time. John Obi Mikel is the latest doubt, joining Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko, Ricardo Carvalho and Arjen Robben on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring problem. Steve Sidwell, the Reading midfield player, is expected to have a medical this week, but his debut must wait.
“Mikel has a muscular injury so has no chance to play,” Mourinho said. “The reality is that for a final we do not have 16 players. It’s not a good picture, but the 11 players I pick will go with a big spirit.”
Mourinho rested Ashley Cole, Michael Essien and Claude Makelele and was fortunate to keep an unbeaten home league record stretching back to FC Porto’s defeat by Beira Mar five years ago. In doing so, Chelsea equalled Liverpool’s record of 63 top-flight matches at home without defeat, although a more telling statistic is the fact that Mourinho’s team have ended the season with five successive Premiership draws, their worst run of his reign. The lap of honour was muted, although Mourinho vowed to return next season.
Chelsea will have to improve for the Cup Final because lethargy has overtaken them in recent weeks. After a forgettable first half yesterday, Everton seized control five minutes into the second, Leon Osman breaking down the right before squaring the ball to James Vaughan, who side-footed past Petr Cech. The 18-year-old could have condemned Chelsea to their first home league defeat in more than three years three minutes later, but Cech demonstrated great athleticism to reach his well-struck volley.
Chelsea are most dangerous when threatened, however, and they used their familiar qualities of strength and cunning to summon an equaliser. Wayne Bridge’s cross from the left found its way to Shaun Wright-Phillips, who picked out Didier Drogba for his 32nd goal of a remarkable season.
David Moyes, the Everton manager, was more concerned by an apparent foul by Paulo Ferreira on Mikel Arteta in the build-up, running on to the pitch, only to be sent to the stands by Mark Halsey, the referee, whose decision to disallow James McFadden’s late effort because James Beattie was standing in an offside position was a questionable call that cost Everton fifth place in the Premiership and £583,000 in prize-money. “ The players were superb, but I’m disappointed because we wanted to finish fifth,” Moyes said.”

And we don't want to hear whingeing from supporters of a team who threw in the towel when they played ManUtd and were 2-0up. at home. Everton were stupid enough to let United dictate to them who they can play in goal and then agent Neville did his party piece. Everton in UEFA, Europe trembles.
chuck wilson, stockport,
Well Chelski, now you know how it feels to be in the position with injuries. United has had the same over a few seasons and so has other teams in the prem.... But, dare I say it Moroninho grow up and show us at United what UR teams is made of instead a bunch of highly priced inderviduals.

Moyes and Mourinho complain about referees, that it was the wrong decision or it should have been a penalty, or he was offside,or he didn't like what the fourth official was wearing!! At the end of the day Everton were lucky to have finished as high as they did. As for Chelsea they are starting to prove that they are 2 season wonders.
Tony Bleasdale, Liverpool,
Schoolboy Moaninho makes me laugh. Have some humility man and grow upEvery other manager in the league, even his own team members accept Man Utd were the better team this year. All teams have injuries over the year, Man Utd have played the last two months without ALL of their first choice back four. United won because they scored far more goals, played better football and more importantly scored from all over the park.
As for this ridiculous Tim Howard smokescreen. Moyes was aware other people were interested in Howard and wanted to tie up his transfer before the end of the season which would have been the norm. Ferguson did him a favour and agreed on the proviso that the same rules that exist for all loan players would stay in place until the end of the season. If Moyes didn't like that proviso then he would have had to wait, again like everyone else, and keep him on loan till the end of the season with the possibility of losing him. Moyes agreed and stuck to his side of the bargain.

Spot on Ben and Tom, all there is to say about Moyes' complain

Everton are lucky that points are only awarded for wins and draws. If "entertainment" points were awardable (or deductible for lack of it) they'd have been relegated. Only one reason for that, David Moyezzzzzzzzzz.

Calm down Brian. Everton have been generously rewarded by
Man Utd for helping Rooney pick up a premiership winners medal.
Thankfully this more than makes up for missing out on fifth place.

When Drogba scored (after a blatant foul on Arteta was ignored) Chelsea had two men standing on the goal line yards offside. Everton score a 'winner' and a beady eyed linesman spots an Everton player marginally offside. I don't want to hear any more whingeing from Mourinho about referees being biased against Chelsea for some time to come. Poor refereering robbed Everton of victory and a lot of money.

If Moyes wanted to finish fifth, perhaps he should have played Tim Howard against Manchester United?
