Sam Allardyce, the Newcastle United manager, is weighing up an audacious £10 million move for Peter Crouch, the Liverpool forward. Twice thwarted in his attempts to sign Crouch while in charge at Bolton Wanderers, Allardyce is hoping to strike it third time lucky this summer, although any deal would be dependent on a number of factors.
Rafael Benítez is willing to sell Crouch, but the Liverpool manager will first want to satisfy himself that a suitable replacement can be found, especially with Craig Bellamy nearing the exit door, Robbie Fowler released and the pursuit of one world-class striker proving difficult enough.
Benítez has struck a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Andriy Voronin, the Ukraine forward, but Samuel Eto’o, the Barcelona striker, and Carlos Tévez, of West Ham United, are looking increasingly ambitious targets, while the manager is understood to have reservations about whether Darren Bent is worth the £15 million fee Charlton Athletic could command.
With Liverpool demanding £12 million for Bellamy, who is being courted by Aston Villa, West Ham and Blackburn Rovers, Benítez would probably want at least that much for Crouch, although Allardyce wants first to establish whether Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins wish to stay at St James’ Park.
Owen is attracting interest from Liverpool and Manchester United, so in theory a swap deal involving Crouch would make sense, but the situation is thought to be more complicated than that, especially because Newcastle supporters would probably be lukewarm to the idea. Crouch was also wanted by Glenn Roeder, Allardyce’s predecessor.
Whatever the decisions of Owen or Martins, they will not prevent Allardyce from pressing ahead with his plans to sign Mark Viduka, who is a free agent after his contract with Middlesbrough expired.
Mohamed Sissoko will hold talks with Benítez this week about his future. The Mali midfield player fell down the pecking order after Javier Mascherano’s arrival.
Benítez’s priority may be to find players who will turn Liverpool into genuine title contenders, but that has not prevented the Spaniard from planning for the future, with Andras Simon and Krisztian Nemeth, two young strikers, arriving on long-term contracts from MTK Hungaria. Simon is a year younger than Nemeth, 18, who caught the eye during last year’s Under-17 European Championship finals.
Owen Hargreaves will have a medical at Old Trafford this week before completing his £18 million move from Bayern Munich.
United are hoping to arrange a replacement fixture for their planned match against a Malaysia XI on July 27, which has been cancelled because it clashed with the Asian Cup.
Thaksin Shinawatra is expected to make a formal bid for Manchester City next week, with Claudio Ranieri the former Thailand Prime Minister’s preferred choice to succeed Stuart Pearce as manager.
Wigan Athletic have accepted defeat in their pursuit of Phil Jagielka. The Sheffield United captain is expected to join Everton.

i think what is missing from liverpool is a striker who can take the ball down/control and then run at the defences. Benitez strategy of "knock-down" balls for the second striker to slam it in is being read by the opposition as was so painfully obvious at the championship final. A striker who can do this is of course Eto, and also Bent. Bellamy has to go. He is more trouble than he is worth. Crouch should stay as he gives us the Chelsea dimension i.e. "route one"!

benitez does not rate crouch, who may do better with the toon army
viduka is way too old
get owen out; he will never hit the heights of yesteryear, no matter which team he goes to

Very original Ray, very original.
Jamie, Newcastle,
Rafa has told Crouch he is staying so the above is already out of date.
mike65, waterford,
I know let's sign a striker for £17 million who then gets injured all season, then swap him for someone who doesn't command a fee of more than £7.5million,
Sounds logical to me
Fred, London,
So, such a move is not acceptable to the Toon Army! Compere Crouch to Owen over the past 2 years. Owen's record doesn't stand up really, does it? And still you are paying him £100,000 a week!!! Also, why would Crouchy want to go to Newcastle?? After all, if he does go he'll never win another medal, will he?
Ray Dunn, Liverpool,
The fact that Allardyce s after Crouch immediately shows the playing style he is going to adopt for Newcastle. Rout one. Unless he wins trophies fast he will not last at Newcastle if he plays that way.
CJ, Woodbridge,
tevez is a good player and would add something definitely but he is not outstanding just because he scored goals in the last few games of the season. Crouch should stay as he provides something different. If Tevez and Eto are proving difficult then, bringing owen back, a goalscorer when fit, for a cut price £9 million would not be a bad idea. Bellamy should leave as he has done nothing. Money should be burned to get another top class striker like David Villa also.

Big Sam is on a hiding to nothing if he thinks he can get away with swapping Owen for Crouch. Frankly, such a move is not acceptable to the Toon Army!
Dave Cook, Newcastle,
I'd keep Crouchy as a 3rd option, especially away from home. Need a quality, proven goal scorer. Sissoko can go too if he wants to, Gerrard & Mascherano should be first choice in the middle, we need 2 quality wide players also.
Wayne, Swindon,
If 12 million pounds for Bellamy seems ludicrous, 15 million pounds for Bent is beyond parody.
B. J. Carroll, Hong Kong, China
I hope the Crouch talk is a joke, as is Crouch's ability.

The idea that already LFC are out of the race for Tevez and Eto is breathtaking. If the board are not willing to back Benitez and bid high and well for players like these, there is no prospect of LFC challenging for the title. Third choicers like Bent, who can hardly merit a fee of £10 million, are not going to add to Liverpool. He is vastly overrated and overpriced. Fellows like Tevez and Eto are born footballers with bundles of talent.
Sé, Liverpool, England
I can't see liverpool selling crouch.
As he add's something different to the attack.
But i can see Craig Bellamy leaving liverpool.
