Charlton Athletic have warned Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool that they will not move on their valuation of Darren Bent. The forward turned down a move to West Ham United after Charlton accepted a £17million bid for the 23-year-old.
Tottenham have reportedly offered £13million and Liverpool have also been linked with the England international but Peter Varney, the Charlton chief executive, says he will not budge. "We've a valuation and we will not sell for less than that, other bids have not met our valuation," he said.
Bent turned down a move to Upton Park in the hope of Spurs or Liverpool making a move for him. But Varney said, that unless Charlton get their asking price, Bent will be playing in the Championship next season.
"West Ham matched our valuation and that was why they were given permission last week to speak to Darren," he added. "No other club has managed that and as things stand Darren will be staying with Charlton. He is our player and under contract to us."

Has Darren Bent asked to leave? No. He likes the club and fans, and has said he will leave if it will help the finances at the club. I agree that we should cash in on him, its a gamble because if we come back up to the Premiership, his value would still be around 15m. I say that take the gamble and cash in on him, and see the new talent coming through, especially with young strikers such as Luke Varney, who I predict will be the next big thing in the Championship. I will be very sad to see Darren leave, but the club comes first and us supporters pay good money each week and we want to be back in the Prem this time next year. As for Spurs getting rid of some players, I wouldnt mind Ziegler and Ghaly, or even Routledge. If Spurs offered 14m plus one of those players, I would take that.
Good luck to Darren if the deal goes through...Charlton the club, lives on. We will be back with new quality.

It's clear Liverpool aren't interested with their continuing interest in Torres so why does their name keep coming up? Because Charlton would like Spurs to believe Liverpool were also in the running?
£17m for Bent? £16m for Henry? It is clear he's not worth that and Spurs are the only ones after him.

look thats a lot of money to warm the bench when a hot water bottle will cost about a tenner , besides all joking apart if we do get him ??? will there be some sort of clause in his contract stating he MUST play at least 25% of every game ???? and we all know jol isn't the best when it comes to tactical substitutions is he ??

i dont think we (thfc) should buy him , we know he wouldd'nt start and somewhere in his contract will be some sort of clause stating he must play at least so many mins a game ? at times and with jols sub tactics i can see this being a huge problem ???

Bent is not the sulking type - He hasn't asked to move, so I think if he is at Charlton next season he will work hard and probably be the difference between them getting promoted or not. Nugent's recent inclusion in England squad (ok, so there were some injuries) shows that Bent will still be in the frame for international call-ups... He wil score a hatful in the Championship - so I don't really see how/why his value would fall by very much?... So Tottenham or Lieverpool should put up - or shut up... £17m is the price. Hope WH don't go back for him again...

Although I understand Charltons position, I think they could be "shooting themself in the foot".
Should the choose to keep him and play him in the Championship, his value will very soon decline rapidly. By Xmas it could be as low as £9m. Next summer £6m and so on.
Keeping a player who clearly wants away does not do the club any favours, both short term and long term. Disruption within the sqaud is common. The player not pulling his full weight. Even pretending to be injured.
What will Charlton then be able to do, Either play him in the reserves as a punishment, which off course will drastically lower his value. Or let time slip by until he is out or near the end of his contract. Either way the result will be the same "CUT PPICE" for Bent.
Take the money while you can, re invest in other up and coming talent and move on.
Les, Worthing, UK
Charlton are pathetic - the player clearly wants to leave and all this means is that they will have a player on their books who doesn't want to be there.
£17 mill is an outlandish valuation. Lest we forget the £10.8 mill that bought us Berba...also, isn't that Huntelaar boy available for £10mill??
If we chuck Mido into the equation that might knock a couple of quid off
Slads, Bromley,
If Daren Bent wants to move on from Charlton then he should submit a transfer request. I am sure any club who wishes to utilise his ability will make up any shortfall. Charlton , like any other club will not hold on to a player who does not want to stay with them, regardless of contract. They are also requesting a transfer fee designed to scare off all but the foolish or stupid. Charlton needs to wake up and realise that by holding on to Darren, they will only damage his international playing career and is no guarantee they will make the premiership at the end of next season. They do not need a dispirited striker.
