Manchester United last night appeared to have won the race to sign Carlos Tévez. The West Ham United forward, who is playing in the Copa America in Venezuela, has told his Argentina teammates that a deal has been agreed for him to play at Old Trafford next season.
Tévez has been coveted by some of the top European clubs this summer, including Inter Milan, Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid, after his rousing performances and seven goals were largely responsible for keeping West Ham in the Premiership last season. Their survival was ensured when his perseverance allowed him to score the only goal in the defeat of United at Old Trafford on a dramatic final day of the season in May.
It is likely that Tévez will move to United initially on a 12-month loan deal, with a fee of about £4 million payable to Kia Joorabchian, the businessman who owns the economic rights to the player, and wages in excess of £3 million. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, would also want the option of making the move permanent at the end of next season.
On the day that Liverpool broke their transfer record by completing the £20.2 million signing of Fernando Torres, the Spain striker, from Atlético Madrid, the capture of Tévez, 23, would be a resounding signal of intent from United that they intend resolutely to defend their title and make a concerted attempt to win the Champions League.
United have already committed more than £50 million this summer on an England midfield player and two of the best young attacking talents in Europe. Owen Hargreaves arrived for £17 million from Bayern Munich and was joined by Nani, the 20-year-old Sporting Lisbon winger, and Anderson, the 19-year-old FC Porto playmaker, with the two deals understood to be worth projected figures of £17.3 million and £20.4 million respectively. Even Chelsea have had no answer to the speed and extravagance with which United have gone about their business this summer.
With Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo already in their ranks, the addition of Tévez would give Ferguson a formidable array of firepower.
Despite the problems that West Ham encountered after signing Tévez – they were fined £5.5 million in April for breaching third-party agreements – it would be possible to structure a contract that was acceptable to the Premier League. Javier Mascherano, the Argentina midfield player, moved from West Ham to Liverpool in January under similar circumstances.
Should United sign Tévez on a permanent deal, they are likely to have to pay in the region of £35 million. Inter had offered about £30 million before they pulled out of negotiations.
Ferguson has been looking for a reliable goalscorer and had considered Samuel Eto’o, of Barcelona, Dimitar Berbatov, the Bulgarian who made such an impression last season with Tottenham Hotspur, and Nicolas Anelka, of Bolton Wanderers. The arrival of Tévez could hasten the sale of Alan Smith, who has been made surplus to requirements.
West Ham have meanwhile confirmed the signing of Richard Wright, the former Everton goalkeeper, on a free transfer. The 29-year-old has been signed to provide competition for Robert Green.

chelseas glory days are comoin to an end.
junior, waterford, ireland
Too much like Rooney, not van Nistelrooy who is the one that needs to be replaced!
Jeremy Williams, Bristol, UK
This deal can still be matched by West Ham United, already thye have tabled an offer in the region of £6million, so all this are still rumours. Tevez will decide when he comes back from Copa Americas, I am sure he is concentrating on winning that tournament. I hope he stays in London and with the Hammers.
Indy Johal, Ilford, UK
Oh well. it looks like we'll be seeing a return of the ABU brigade again now that MUFC are buying big again. That's fantastic because the ABU's are jst the spur United will need.
Oh and yes I am from Manchester; Trafford to be exact.
A Thomas, Durham,
makes my £600 season ticket at OT well worth it....can;t wait for the new season!
Paul Hudson, Bolton, England
after the amount of money man u and liverpool have spent i wonder if they win trophies next season they will like chelsea have in the past 3 seasons be accused of buying them.of course not simply because man u/liverpool seem to be exempt from criticism from the majority of press correspondents.
joe t, zurgena, spain
Now that ManU has splashed on new players, their fans and the media including The Times are hailing their action. Only a season ago when Chelsea bought players to revamp an ordinary side and prepare it to be a title contender on all fronts it was regarded as "buying" the title(s). Proves that as Chelsea you can't win - especially with media. That said, the PL will be greater to watch with all these quality players, whether they be at United or Reds. The more stars the merrier!
james , Johannesburg, South Africa
Teves should move to Liverpool and join his mate Mascherano. The two playing together?
Priceless
Paulo, sydney, australia
Tevez to Man Utd would be huge.
Could you imagine a squad that consisted the attacking talents of Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani, Scholes, Anderson, Giggs, Saha and Tevez.
This is a big signal of intent by Manchester United
Torres who?
Rick, Manchester, UK
What a load of rubbish this whole story is and it is about time all the media gave West Ham and Tevez a break..The chairman of the club stated yesterday Tevez has a 3 year contact with West Ham and that is that.
Paul Gregory, Dover, Kent
So Tevez does not belong to West Ham. I thought a player needed to be owned by a club to be able to play in England?
Can anyone clarify that point?
Pierre, Reading, UK
So much for the concerns that American owners were not going to give Sir Alex money to spend on new players. There is a strong argument that he would not have the opportunity to recruit such talent without the additional funds supplied from across the pond.
Adam, Denver, CO, USA
If United sign Tevez it will make all other transfer business by other Premiership rivals meaningless.
Mark Rossi, Manchester, England
Actually, a more interesting sidebar to this situation will be in determining who actually owns Tevez? Is it West Ham or the Mgt Group? I can see a court case or injunction here that might stop Tevez from playing altogether! If, for example, Tevez does play for UTD and it is deemed that he actually belonged to the aggravated party then do UTD get fined and lose points for fielding what would clearly be an ineligible player! They should! I'll bet the Blades will also watch this situation unfold with interest. If it is deemed that the Mgt Group still owns Tevez then the Hammers did not break the contract with them they certainly fielded an ineligible player! Result! See you in the Championship lads! Welcome back to the Premiership Blades! It is surprising how much agro this guy Tevez has generated off the pitch, not that he did anything wrong. Just a few greedy people wanting to cash in on him! Stay tuned folks this is going to get very interesting and possibly really nasty!
Robert, Mississauga, Canada
Im with Ben in Sydney on this one. Although the fact the Times are running it along with the tabloids suggest there may be something to it. Until it breaks on Sky Sports News or MUTV i wont believe.
He was always my first choice for United as he has settled in the Prem i just thought with all the spending already done we would be looking in the bargain basement for a striker. I guess the way its rumoured the deal will be structured is the reason United will be able to pull it off.
Rooney,Ronaldo,Nani,Anderson,Saha,Scholes,Giggs and Tevez would be some attacking line up.
Nick, Thrapston, England
I notice you dont post comments from West Ham fans that doubt your sources. Does that not show that you are biased and not really keen to share a balanced view on this story. I dont believe this for one minute and who is the source and where ae the comments from Tevez, Joabchin, Fergie, Curbishly. No dont see them do you ? no thought not would be nice to read some reliable source what ever happens with Tevez
Mark, Thurrock, Essex
The difference, that you two seem to overlook is that Manchester United have developed homegrown talent or bought it (Smith, Rooney, Ferdinand, Hargreaves) and it's the reason for our success. Chelsea were mediocre, and bought success. If you argue against it then your simply kidding yourself.
Arsenal in the late 90s came to fruition because of their immense defense which was homegrown. Even Liverpool have developed at least some talent but they too seem to be going the way of Chelsea at present. But for them it seems to work. Although paying 20 million for Fernando Torres is laughable.
As a Man U fan, I really wouldn't like to see 30 million spent on Tevez, it could be better spent.
Richard Armstrong, Rothbury,
...what's all this talk about a Liverpool spending spree? Torres at £20 million does not a "spending spree" make, and he is the only first team player we've bought so far for proper money, Voronin was a free, and the rest are kids for the future, even Leiva is not guaranteed anything as he is still a pup! So c'mon! We will be spending on a winger/s but by the end of it we are probably going to have spent roughly about half of what Man U have now if they get Tevez! We will also be offloading a lot of players, like Bellamy, Gonzalez, heck even Cisse is still on our books, and so the actual "spend" will be a lot lower. Just because Roman has got a little jaded with his plaything and closed his purse you start crying. More to the point, if Tevez has gone to Man U I may also shed a tear as think they have just jumped ahead again just as we were about to catch 'em!
greg, liverpool born, anfield bred, UK
Wow! I think it is rather overkill to have Tevez go to United.
I love this guy and he is my favorite player but I think Rooney and Ronaldo will be jealous of the attention Tevez will get.
He would be better off on a club just down the standings a bit and that would keep the competition level equal.
Maybe he will work out at United, maybe it is all hype and he will be off to Spain...at any rate Go Tevez go!
Richard Belcher, davis, california USA
Can I just ask the obvious question? If United sign tevez, who are they actually signing him from is it West Ham or MSL/Joorabichan ? The reason I ask, is West Ham say, he was a loan player, but they then tore that contract up and he now has a 3 year contract with them, yet Joorabichan, seems to be hawking his 'client' around europes elite teams, and now the PL are threatening to block the transfer unless West Ham get the tranfer fee, mmmmmmmmm time to resign mr scudamore!
Brendan, Rotherham,
No doubt Ferguson has made his intentions very clear..and that is to rule Europe in the not too distant future and to firmly hold on the premiership title.
But i must caution that success will not come easy and i do hope the south americans (Anderson & Tevez) and Nani adapt quickly at utd. Ronaldo took 3 to 4 years to peak!
Joseph Sanna, Nairobi, kenya
Darren, is one top striker not enough? Or are you jealously looking over your shoulder at the one that got away? I highly doubt Benitez will look to steal Tevez, hopefully this will be another piece of quiet and stunning business in Fergies' renaissance in the transfer market.
I simply cannot believe the array of talent United will have if this signing comes off, there will be threats everywhere, and for the first time in years real quality on the bench to change games when its not working - ie against Milan.
Pride of all Europe.
Simon, Macclesfield,
Re Bob from Plymouth - no need to sign another defender Jonny Evans is back at the club, he can comfortably fill in at left back or centre back next season.
Lorraine, Oxford,
Come this season Chelsea will win again the title. Liverpool second and Man U behind Arsenal and Totenham.
Time to Ferguson to go.
Brian, Hull,
glory glory man utd
kandarp brahmbhatt, lewiston, usa
I fear for Chelsea. I am wondering whether Putin has told Abramovitch that Russia wants that money back so that it can go to its rightful owners - the man in the streets of Moscow and elsewhere over there.
David, Poole, UK
Chelsea have already acquired 3 players on free transfers; they are now looking at getting Pato, Chimbonda and Malouda. That makes them the busiest team in the transfer market. Liverpool have signed a host of youngsters with Torres as the only big name signing. Arsenal have added Eduardo and are looking at adding Martins.
The difference has been Utd getting young and exciting talent at exobitant prices. With Tevez coming, it is increasingly frightening for teams in Europe at the prospect of facing a line-up featuring Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and the experience of Giggs, Scholes, Saha and company. Losing to Milan has forced Sir Alex into action this summer.
Fitzmaurice , Perth, Australia
I would love to see Tevez at Tottenham but that would not happened at least for the moment.
But I would be gald to see Tevez out of West Ham because the eastlanders deserve to be relegated for cheating.
Joshua, Singapore,
Boy, that would definitely complete my dream team (and if we can somehow keep Heinze too - I donât like the idea of him going to Liverpool - Somewhere in Europe is still acceptable but not preferable)
Tintin, London,
I am a Man U fan big time but really do not print reports of players sealing a deal with a club until they are absolute fact. PLEASE!
Liam, Sydney, Australia
New winds of goals are blowing in Old Trafford.Sir Alex Ferguson is going in the right way.He chosses one of the best strikers of the word.Carlitos Tevez with Ronaldo and Rooney will fill of goal the oposite nest.
Hugo, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Well to be honest, Chelsea spent in excess of 300 million in the space of 2 years and therefore went from European challengers to Premiership winners. That is buying the title. I'm gutted Tevez looks like he is going to Man Utd, I wanted Torres/Tevez upfront for the mighty reds next year!
Ben, Liverpool, MErseyside
This would be a great buy for Man U, but i'm sure WHU can match the offer or even better it, when does aplayer of such talent ever come to a mid-table side it only comes round once now and again< i hope WHU can keep Tevez for at least end of next season.
Indy Johal, Ilford, UK
Rob W in Singapore and Sonny. Breaking your transfer record and paying £20m for one player who is going to be the fulcrum of your team can hardly be construed as "buying the title". More simply keeping in line with market forces.
Paying more than £20m for several players simply to ensure your rivals can't buy them however does. Pity it didn't work out for you last season.
Adam Clarke, Liverpool,
buying the league? the difference between man u and chelsea is that chelsea spent £200m and won the league and man u won the league and then spent £50m - £80m.
tom, london,
Tevez himself has long been an admirer of United. He was even fined by his former club Corinthians for wearing a United jersey at public engagements. It's no surprise then that Fergie is in the best position to sign him.
If he does sign, no defence will be able to cope with the flair, skill, and blistering pace that United now have in abundance for the coming season!
Patrick Conboy, Longford, Ireland
As a Liverpool fan, I find this extremely worrying. Man U seem to be making a series of excellent additions to an already superb squad. I am, sad to say, envious. Grrrrrr.
Trotter, Bournemouth, England
Did I hear any whimpers and groans (not forgetting, moans)from all the Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool supporters. As a Man Utd supporter, I'm looking forward to watching these three teams (C,A & L) scrapping for 2nd,3rd 4th (and even lower) places for at least, the next 5 seasons. Oh, I almost forgot - also, the 5 quadruples we plan to celebrate. Now, where were we.....
ahmed, Leicester, UK
If Man utd do sign Tevez yes its a great signing but nothing is a dead cert over the years lots of clubs have bought big name players only to see them sidelined for 12 mths, but I still wish Newcastle would sign him.
Pabs, newcastle upon tyne,
Chelsea spent over £175 million on players in 2005 which is over 3 times the £50million man utd have spent this season, it hardly even compares.
No one seems interested in the fact that spurs have spent £35 million are they buying the title?
Or is it that this season all the clubs have pots of money because of the massive TV deal they just signed.
John, Yorkshire, UK
If United manage to bag Tevez, it certainly offers a mouth watering combination up front, not sure why some folk think we need a goal poacher, we had that in Ruud and as last season showed we prospered as a team without a poacher. United are much more fluid and all about speed of attack and power and Tevez fits the bill perfectly especially as he is not made of glass/balsa wood unlike Saha.
Hal, London/Manchester,
Great News, if true, an attack consisting of Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, Giggs/Nani, Scholes/Anderson and Hargreaves would be the best in the league and maybe Europe. Fergie has definately got the champions league in his sights and with that attack combined with the defence we've already got (all of the back four in the PFA team) you wouldn't bet against him winning it.
Liam, Chorlton, Manchester, England
Stunning signings already by Utd and Liverpool, with hopefully more to come. What will happen to Arsenal and Chelsea? Arsenal have great potential in that side, but all those young players have to come good. Meanwhile Chelsea's flash in the pan looks to be over.
Abramovich has turned from Santa to Scrooge, and at just the wrong time.
Martin , Rochdale,
Holy cow! This is a player i'd have liked at my beloved Chelsea. If this deal goes through, the EPL will be done and dusted. And to think it may start as an initial loan or with an outlay of £4m. Is that good business or what?
Peter Koeb, Geneva, Switzerland
united will have great attacking options. now they just need someone in the mdifield who can tackle and someone who wants to repay the debt.
jem, london, uk
Er, who's buying the league now? I don't hear any protests either from the press or the fans...........maybe because the normal order is being restored? All we need now is a resurgent Arsenal, and for Chelsea to slip back into mid-table mediocrity and everyone will be happy.
Signed - a p'eed off chelsea supporter
sonny, london,
for me the main worry is at the back for man utd. with heinze and silvestre likely to leave, it really does leave them short at the back (bit like chelski last year). with rooney and ronaldo they already have the firepower needed to challenge for teh title, so im hoping they either get heinze to stay or buy another defender.
bob, plymouth,
It will be interesting to see if the British press (primarily red top tabloids) give Man U and Liverpool the same treatment as they did to Chelsea after their spending sprees in previous seasons with accusations of 'buying the title' etc
Rob W, Brit in Singapore,
It would be great for man utd to sign him. A player of his calibre would add another dimension to our firepower. We certainly need a player who could get the goals consistenly, and a player in the "Van Nisterooy" mould would be a great addition to the team,as the team(in my opinion) sort of "fizzled-out" during the last few weeks of the EPL.
Seriously, coupled with the triple signing of Anderson,Nani,Hargreaves, Sir Alex would have seriously bolstered his team with the arrival of Tevez.
GO MAN UTD!
Shawn, Singapore,
Gillett and Hicks are winning many friends at Liverpool as they seem to be making good on their promises. There is real excitement at the pospect of Quaresma who was many fans top target for the summer, closely followed to Tevez. If Gillett and Hicks can land Quaresma AND hijck United's alleged deal for Tevez they will win enormous Kudos with the Liverpool fans who could all ist a number of United's current squad who were also targeted by Liverpool. If Rafa wants the player who is very god friends with Mascherano also and a loan deal can be arranged as reported, maybe it can happen. I hope Quaresma remains the priority but if the new owners really want the fans on side nicking Tevez from under Fergie's nose would be a stunning coup.
Darren Davies, Manchester,
Flair galore at United next season!!! Brilliant
Alvin, Singapore,
even as a man utd fan tevez clearly stated he wanted to decide his future after the cop america & why are there no quotes from tevez himself and quotes from clubs or any other officials?
this is dodgy at best, unless someone produces a good source then i will no believe until he is wearing the shirt
ben, sydney,
skip the next season and just hand us the trophy. yawn......
woohoo!! Tevez for United!
Chelsea for the Carling Cup!!
Mark, HK,
That would be th final part in the jigsaw for us and i would welcome him, he has proved his class at prmeirship level so would be a good loan move for us
Benno, Belfast, Northern Ireland
we are gonna Rock the World again! For sure now; we have got a better team than Barcelona! Young and Improving!
1. Man United. 2. Barcelona. 3. Chelsea. 4. Inter then the Rest!
Red Davids, Windhoek, Namibia
I'll believe it when I believe it
Yoggi, Oxford, Italy
i cant believe that united bosses have done so much for the club and for the fans. i thought once again they would go for money and sell ronaldo for a huge sum. but this time they have just football in mind. i think its all becoz of the great Sir Alex Ferguson.
Three cheers for him
Bappaditya, agartala, india
I see a change of policy regarding transfers from SAF. Would that be his final season at OT? The type of money and flair he is buying this summer say to me that he is preparing his final hurrah. And he is buying with Europe in mind.
Andreas Skiadopoulos, Bxl & Ath,
Are they all supposed to fit in one team Neil? 2 at the back: v. adventurous!
Spie Dermen, delhi, india
Yeah Tevez is pretty good, but I think he is too similar to Wazza. Where is the goal poacher we were looking forward to? If Saha goes missing again, who is gonna lead the line for us? Not Rossi, not Ronaldo, Wazza is only average at that role and definitely not Tevez (especially in Europe). You have it wrong I think. Tevez wont be signed by Fergie. He is still looking for the goal poacher.
Rezwan, Manchester,
That would be an ugly, yet effective partnership.
Jordano Bruno, Tirana, Albania
Signing Carlos Tevez by ManU should give them years of top performances in Europe, England and Internationally! He is not only a very skilled intelligient player, but is very fast mentally and creative!
No wonder that he won the Brazilian best football player of the year! And this with the traditional rivalry that Argentina and Brazil have, is not an easy task!
Brian L Chaytor, Toronto, ON
If this is true and we sign Tevez, this is the first time in years I can really see the Champion's League coming back to Old Trafford.
Imagine an attacking lineup with Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and Saha/Rossi/Anderson....
Bolstered by Carrick and Hargreaves shoring up the back line.I can't wait for this season to begin!!
Neil, Toronto, Canada

I don't think any club in Europe will stop United if they sign Tevez.
