Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Manchester United will win any legal fight with Gabriel Heinze over his proposed move to Liverpool.
It has now been confirmed that Heinze has employed a team of lawyers to investigate whether United are right to block a transfer to Anfield, even though Reds boss Rafael Benitez has met the £6.8 million asking price for the 29-year-old.
The shock move effectively renders his Old Trafford future untenable.
Yet United are sticking to their guns in refusing to let Heinze become the first player to switch between the bitter North West rivals since Phil Chisnall moved to Merseyside in 1964. And, having ordered Heinze to be back in training on August 6, Ferguson has made it clear he expects the Argentina international to meet the deadline.
"We are aware Gaby is taking legal advice," Ferguson said. "That is good. I hope it is good advice because we are confident of our position. He is due back in training on August 6, which gives him three clear weeks' rest after the Copa America. And we expect him back in training a week on Monday."
The deadline effectively gives Heinze's lawyers a week to find out if the former Paris St Germain defender has a case, which revolves around whether a letter signed by chief executive David Gill, confirming the figure United would be prepared to sell Heinze for, overrides the player's contract which still has two years to run.
Gill claims he informed Heinze's agent verbally, prior to Liverpool revealing their interest, that United would not be prepared to sell him to any of their three major domestic rivals; a discussion which is thought was recorded and could therefore, in theory, be used as part of any defence the Red Devils may wish to put forward in court.
Heinze has been the subject of interest from overseas, with Real Madrid and Inter Milan among the clubs to express an interest. But, the huge Spanish-speaking influence at Liverpool, plus an opportunity to remain in the North West, appears to have an irresistible lure for the player.
After pinning much of the blame for the present situation on Heinze's agents, Ferguson must now accept the defender is also a prime mover. After hailing the 2004 Olympic champion a hero, the tide of supporter goodwill is almost certain to turn against Heinze. Even if he remains at Old Trafford, it is difficult to see him being involved when the champions open the defence of their Premier League crown against Reading on August 12.

what's Fergie scared of? Let heinzie go to Liverpool, we'll give him a chance to play in a team thats going to make their fans proud , the pool have gone 17 years without winning the premiership, but don't forget, the Mancs went 26 years and they were religated too, before this last run, maybe Fergie should be afraid!!

The Liverpool fans probably werent too fussed about getting Heinze at first - maybe even opposed to it just on the basis of him being a through and through Man Utd player. But now after Ferguson has kicked up such a fuss they will absolutely love it if they do land him. They will really feel like they have rubbed Ferguson's nose in it and there will be plenty of songs to sing at the LFC v Man Utd games.
The rivalry is about to get more intense if it does go through.
Bring it on!!!
Skelly, Liverpool,
No no no! It's nonsense to think he will get a game at the Scousers, with Riise and Aurelio returning from injury, Utd only have him and Evra, he played just as many games as Evra last year, so it's not like he's second choice anyway! They're both valued for different, equal reasons at Old Trafford, i wish Liverpool would just leave him alone, he's at the best club in the world and the Utd fans love him!!! Stay Heinze, you are loved and regarded as one of the best defenders in the WORLD at Utd, not just England!!!

Heinze is adaptable but is neither proficient enough at left-back or centre-back for a starting spot at United. I think Liverpool have got better players in both those positions too so I don't think it's worth the hassle for a squad player. At least at Liverpool he'll make the bench so let him go. £6.8m is a hell of a lot more than I thought we'd get for him!
I think Liverpool should save a bit of cash though and buy him some boots with longer studs ... Gabby makes Emile Heskey look as sure-footed as a mountain goat!
Tim, Wales,
Its spite which wont allow united to sell.so why should heinze be any different.his valuation has been met and he has been made welcome. i hope to see Gaby in liverpool red very soon

Abdul, the courts are about to decide whether west Ham or MSI own Carlos Tevez, and my money is on MSI rendering Uniteds approach perfectly legal. As for Heinze I think United should allow him to go to Liverpool,he is a liability in the centre back position and not the same player he was at full back, but he is a United player and they dont want to sell him to Liverpool. The key words are "he is a United player"
steve berry, manchester , England
If sir Alex Ferguson is so confident he and Manchester United will win any legal battle over the Heinze impending transfer to their fiercest rival Liverpool why does he spend so much time talking about the matter? His Liverpool opposite number is rather calm.
Besides, over the last couple of days the Manchester United side had been trying to convince the world that a signed letter given to Mr Heinze informing him that he can move to any club meeting the their valuation of £6.8m by the the club chief executive has no legal force yet the same club want the world to agree with them that a verbal communication to Mr Heinze agents that they are not prepared to sell to the premiership other top three clubs has a greater legal force. What an absurd!
It is very fascinating that Sir A. Ferguson and Man United are refusing to negotiate with West ham over Trevez transfer to man United preferring rather to go to the law court through the player's agent in a bid to sign him.
justin chukwu, London,
This is a sad reflection of some of the mercenaries plying their trade in football today. Heinze was United's player of the year after his first season at Old Trafford, was always a fan favourite, and had the full backing of the club having spent almost a full season out injured. He repays this by going to such lengths to try and force a move to United's chief rivals? Incredible. Admittedly, United had agreed to sell him, but surely he had other suitors?
However, his agents could be pushing this move.
Dave, Cork, Ireland
Alex should let Henzie move. What if we say Alex made illegal and inappropriate ,or even unethical move for Tevez .look all the fuss He is doing about Tevez which is indeed illegal because Manu is negotiating with MSI instead of West Ham.
