John Terry became England’s highest-paid player yesterday by signing a new five-year deal, but another long-running Chelsea contract saga is yet to be resolved, with Frank Lampard’s future still unclear.
Terry, the England and Chelsea captain, has doubled his earnings to £135,000 a week – more than £7 million a year – taking him above his team-mates, Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack, who earn £121,000 a week. The pressure is now on Lampard to commit himself to the club, although Chelsea appear to be in no hurry to reopen negotiations with their other England mainstay, who is believed to have rejected an offer that would have drawn him level with Ballack and Shevchenko.
Terry, 26, back in London after Chelsea’s tour to the United States, had initially proposed a nine-year deal, potentially including a provision for him to become manager once his playing career was over. Talks with the club had been continuing since the winter, but the defender, who had two years left on his existing deal, had wanted assurances about the future of José Mourinho, which was not resolved until the season’s end. He also demanded at least parity with Shevchenko and Ballack, reflecting his status as a key player.
“I’m really happy this has now been concluded. There has been a lot of speculation, but these things take time and I never had any doubts that I wanted to stay at Chelsea and that the club wanted me to stay,” Terry said. “I hope the fans can see we are all trying to build something special here, both for now and for the future, and I want to be a part of that. Now it’s time to look forward to the new season, which we are all very confident about.”
Terry has been at Stamford Bridge since he was a trainee and became England captain after the World Cup finals last year. He missed two months of last season with a back injury, which led to concerns that his whole-hearted style might be damaging his body. In fact, his absence only served to reinforce his value to Chelsea as their form suffered badly without him.
Lampard, 29, is in the penultimate year of his contract. The midfield player said last month that he wanted to stay with Chelsea, despite interest from Barcelona, but that the uncertainty of his position felt strange.
