John Terry became England’s highest-paid player yesterday by signing a new five-year deal, but another long-running Chelsea contract saga is yet to be resolved, with Frank Lampard’s future still unclear.
Terry, the England and Chelsea captain, has doubled his earnings to £135,000 a week – more than £7 million a year – taking him above his team-mates, Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack, who earn £121,000 a week. The pressure is now on Lampard to commit himself to the club, although Chelsea appear to be in no hurry to reopen negotiations with their other England mainstay, who is believed to have rejected an offer that would have drawn him level with Ballack and Shevchenko.
Terry, 26, back in London after Chelsea’s tour to the United States, had initially proposed a nine-year deal, potentially including a provision for him to become manager once his playing career was over. Talks with the club had been continuing since the winter, but the defender, who had two years left on his existing deal, had wanted assurances about the future of José Mourinho, which was not resolved until the season’s end. He also demanded at least parity with Shevchenko and Ballack, reflecting his status as a key player.
“I’m really happy this has now been concluded. There has been a lot of speculation, but these things take time and I never had any doubts that I wanted to stay at Chelsea and that the club wanted me to stay,” Terry said. “I hope the fans can see we are all trying to build something special here, both for now and for the future, and I want to be a part of that. Now it’s time to look forward to the new season, which we are all very confident about.”
Terry has been at Stamford Bridge since he was a trainee and became England captain after the World Cup finals last year. He missed two months of last season with a back injury, which led to concerns that his whole-hearted style might be damaging his body. In fact, his absence only served to reinforce his value to Chelsea as their form suffered badly without him.
Lampard, 29, is in the penultimate year of his contract. The midfield player said last month that he wanted to stay with Chelsea, despite interest from Barcelona, but that the uncertainty of his position felt strange.

No player is worth that much a year let a lone a week! However I do not blame the players for taking as much as they can.
A. Joyce, Wellingborough,
People used to delight in saying Terry was on 90k\week before, but now he's apparently doubled it to 135k. How does that work? Is it really 135k like it was really 90k?
Similarly, people used to delight in telling us Ballack and Sheva were on 130k\week, but now it magics itself into 121k\week to make the distinction sharper.
Or maybe they'e really on 105-110k\week with the rest being made up of signing over their entire image rights to the club.
Let's face it - you don't have a clue what any of them were getting before, nor what they're getting now. Contracts are more complicated than that today and it's facile to say different.
If it was so simple it wouldn't drag out for ten months. They'd just say 100k or 150k and split the difference. You treat us like mugs when you describe it so simplistically. It's not like it's any of your business anyway. Clubs pay what they can afford. Chelsea can afford a lot if they judge the player's worth it.
They do. End of story.

Pre-War, footballers were snootily described as "errand boys" who could kick a bit of leather about.
Today, they are rich "errand boys" kicking a bit of plastic about!
You'd think with all their cash, they'd learn to speak "proper"!

Over rated but earning what I would only refer to as collosal amounts of money, this ,is an insult to humanity, very soon an english player will be the first one to hit bthe 200k per week mark.Hurry up english press,we need that player and you know the criteria to use-nationality ! Period.
simel, swindon, england
I perfectly agree with that, Derek and Tom. But it's football and it's Essien's problem, if he signs a contract until 2012 containing that "less" money...

ir is a mad world. did it take you so long to realise this. this is babylon.

what a waste of money these footballers want to live in the real world and get paid per job performance not many would reach £1000 a game the half hearted show they put on..

The salary paid to premier division footballers is not just a disgrace, its obscene and cannot be justified by any stretch of the imagination.
Philip, Newcastle,
Why the uproar over Terry's new contract? He has been a Chelsea player all his life who played for his Club "rhrough thick and thin"? Although I am a Portuguese, therefore naturally proud of the kid Ronaldo, nobody seems to be very bothered with the 120 he is getting a week.! Ronaldo is just a kid starting out his career in England and who can guarantee any of us that in the future he will not just "up and leave" for greener pastures...certainly not the case with Terry! For all he has done for the Club, I completely agree that he should, at least be getting more than those two..Ballack and Sheva!!

How must Essien and Drogba and Cech feel with Terry getting that much money when objectively they are more influential to the Chelsea team? I think Terry should donate some of his weekly wage to the English Press that over play his true importance to the team because this has fooled the money men at Chelsea. I have no problem with him earning a lot of money, but for him to earn three times as much as Essien is immoral. Is it because he is European and Essien is African that they feel they can under pay Essien, Chelsea's best player, in relation to the others? I think Drogba and Essien should go to Milan or Madrid and get the wages they merit on their performances and let see how good Chelsea really are. Despite the huge sums involved it is verging on African exploitation at Chelsea where the English and European players get the top money in wages and Africans do all the work on the pitch.
Derek, Paris,
what an utter disgrace. give this guy £135,000 a week and no one batters an eyelid. Give a hard working GP £100,000 a year and its a national scandal on the front page of newspapers. insanity. I know who i think deserves the money.

£135,000 a week?
The world has gone mad.
Tom Maxwell, Redhill,
Terry is a fine defender, especially suited for the EPL, but one wonders what a Booby Moore or Franco Baresi would have been worth today in financial terms.
