José Mourinho may claim to have mellowed over the summer, but his new-found calm has been tested before Chelsea’s visit to Liverpool tomorrow, with his team accused of lacking “spark” and Rafael Benítez suggesting that Florent Malouda was seduced by money when rejecting Anfield for Stamford Bridge this summer.
Benítez stopped short of accusing Malouda of greed, but the Liverpool manager left little doubt about why he feels that the former Lyons winger moved to London rather than Merseyside last month. Malouda, having indicated that he would join Liverpool, is understood to have phoned Benítez to explain his decision after opting to join Chelsea in a £13.5 million transfer, but Benítez, unimpressed, implied yesterday that he was not prepared to match Chelsea’s wage offer for a player whose attitude he had begun to question.
“We try to sign players we think are good enough for us,” Benítez said. “Now in modern football it depends on the money. Some players prefer more money and it’s something you cannot control. You must only pay the money you can afford and the right money for each player. We can compete with other teams in the market if we want, but we will only pay the right money for the right players.
“Malouda was one of our names, but he decided to go to Chelsea. He knows why. The lifestyle in London? I don’t think so. I don’t want to say why, but I know the answer.”
The comments about Malouda were symptomatic of BenÍtez’s willingness to engage in verbal warfare with Mourinho in a way that he has not attempted with his other rivals. A familiar dig, one that he repeated yesterday, is that “Roman Abramovich has done a fantastic job for Chelsea”, implying that the billionaire owner is the biggest reason for their success, while Mourinho’s claims to have mellowed were treated with disdain.
“He forgets when he starts talking about us and then sometimes he recovers his memory,” BenÍtez said. “He was talking about us again in the summer. Maybe he will start thinking about his team now.”
Mourinho will not take kindly to BenÍtez’s interference because he resents the Spaniard’s oft-repeated insinuation that Chelsea have bought success, being at great pains to point out that Liverpool and Manchester United have spent far more than the West London club this summer, with Malouda the club’s only signing who cost a fee.
The Portuguese will be equally affronted by the accusation from Javier Mascherano, the Liverpool mid-field player, that Chelsea lack spark. Neither team have hit top form in winning their first two matches this season, but Mascherano believes that Chelsea should be worried before their arrival at Anfield.
“We are playing a lot better than Chelsea at the moment,” he said. “I have seen some of Chelsea’s games this season and they do not seem to have the same spark as in other years. There is no doubt that Liverpool are the favourites.”
Chelsea should put up more of a fight than on their previous visit to Anfield in the league, last January, when their injury-ravaged team surrendered 2-0. Mourinho will welcome back John Terry for his first game of the season after a knee injury and Michael Essien is in contention after a knee problem, but Ricardo Carvalho has been ruled out with a bruised hip.
Claudio Pizarro reacted strongly yesterday to suggestions from Reading that he dived to get Kalifa Cissé sent off in Wednesday’s 2-1 win at the Madjeski Stadium. “Did they see the game?” Pizarro said. “Of course he kicked me and if I hadn’t pulled my leg away, I’d have broken my leg. I was lucky that I did pull my leg away, but I still have a mark there. Yes, he cut me. You could see that my sock was cut as well.”

Remind me how much Liverpool played for players again? Not the net amount that's the price of getting rid of all his expensive failures. The true figure is the total turnover of players.
Harry, Birmingham,
who on earth is saying any team has won the league after two games, let alone two months. you will see chelsea and man utd again this year and i believe chelsea will be on top from xmas onwards.essien and terry will be crucial for chelsea so lets hope they stay injury free. all you liverpool fans out there, its good that you won the champs league but nothing conpared to the great liverpool sides of the 80's. i would love chelsea to win it but as champions of england as it used to be and should always have been, forget the third and fourth teams getting into champs league, should be champions and maybe runner up at a push. come on the chelse!!!!!

I don't know why a club that have spent nearly £400m on players would start to point fingers at a club like Liverpool whose failure to win the title over the last few years could be traced to their lack of investment on players over the same period. It is not Benitez who sparks another verbal attack rather it Jose Mourinho who has a problem with Liverpool when he attacked them over their modest investment on players earlier in the summer.
Mourinho wants Chelsea to be a club like Liverpool yet he resents them. I think it is the fear that once Liverpool starts to win the title with much less the investment already made by Chelsea, Roman , the Chelsea owner will get rid of him.

Malouda's "secret" reason, of course, is that he wanted to learn under a far superior coach; one whose tactical ability totally eclipses that of Benitez. Wise choice, Florent!
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario, Canada
Rafa is right, Malouda only joined Chelsea, for no other reason but the money. Even one of the fans favourites there (Lampard) knows if he keeps delaying his signature on the contract he will probably end up naming his wage, money is no object. Well no object until the Russian Guy gets bored with his toy and moves onto something else. Even with all his money he will never buy what Liverpool have done in domestic and europeon football. Keep dreaming Chelski..!!
Tony Bleasdale, Liverpool,
Tom
i think you'd find that liverpool only played 1 prem game this season..
get your facts right b4 making any comment please
George, london,
I am afraid that Benny Hill and the rest of his slap stick cast need to wake up.
They are so consumed by both theirs and their own expectations that when they are under pressure it is always someone elases fault when it doesn't go right.
Malouda, like all ambitious young talented players want to play where they feel they have the best chance of success.
If he decides that this is with Chelsea then that is his choice.
When you are paid the kind of wages these guys are on, you are not going to be swayed by what would amount to pocket money.
Liverpool need to get real - not everyone wants to play for you even if you have got an over inflated view of yourself.
Good luck in the Champions league - forget everything else - you are not consistant enough.

It rather lowers the respect supporters may have of individual managers when they resort to comments such as Benitez has made on this occasion about Malouda.
Mourinho has ,in the past, also made observations , like "Gerrard will not win as many medals with Liverpool as he would have had he joined Chelsea."
Surely all comments like this have the effect of galvanising the individual/team for the forthcoming match(matches) ?

what about torres then??? didnt he increase his own price tag...think about it RAFA
kosh, London,
Terry was fit to play Wednesday, Chelsea just didn`t want to risk him.
I would rather that than have a manager say, " Gerrard can play Saturday but can`t play for England Wednesday because he won`t be fit", how does that work ?
Scott, London,
how can people be saying that lfc have won the league after two games, lfc have only played one game so far
ei, glos,
RB's comments regarding wages smell of hypocrisy considering Gerrard earns in excess of $100, 000 per week?
To publicly question Malouda's professionalism & imply his decision to join Chelsea was only related to salary shows a lack of quality on RB's behalf & contradicts his previous statements about not being involved in personal comments with Chelsea.
K, Surrey,
What is it south of the Watford gap players at Chelsea and A rsenal get injured it is reported that they will be out for weeks low and behold as soon as a big game comes up a miracle cure is found.I.e Terry will be out for a month 1 week later a miracle cure is found, i hope the southern softies share their miracle cures with the rest of the country, if not the southern teams have an unfair advantage over their northern counterparts. Why wont one of them come forward and miracle cure Rooney, this is the soft mentality installed into the SOUTHERN part of our country.
Gary Anderson, Salford, England
Liverpool is a great team with a far better and ethical approach but Chelsea is more about mind games and money, money and money. They are a bunch of moaners and without a great history of success and they compete with money and nothing else and always find excuses rather than facing the fact.Appreciatio will always to great ever teams like Liverpool, Man Utd , Arsenal and the likes of Reading for their immense hardwork and fighting spirirts for making football exciting to watch in UK without a doubt.Chelsea is just a recent and we will how long it last .
Amal, London, UK
I am not a Chelsea fan but I'm just getting a little bored of how Liverpool have won the Premier League after just two matches.
I suspect Messers BenÃtez and Mascherano might have a lot less to say Sunday night.
