A frenzied final day of the transfer window featured Harry Redknapp, unsurprisingly, doing plenty of business, and ended with Arsenal signing Lassana Diarra from Chelsea, their London rivals, for about £2 million. The midfield player, who moved to Stamford Bridge two years ago from Le Havre, was unhappy with his lack of first-team opportunities and was in the final year of his contract.
Fifteen minutes before the midnight deadline, West Ham United signed Nolberto Solano on a free transfer, but missed out on Nicky Shorey, the Reading left back. Portsmouth began the day with the signing of Glen Johnson, who was a regular at right back during his loan spell from Chelsea last season. Johnson cost about £3 million, half the sum that Chelsea had paid for him four years ago, when he became the first significant signing under Roman Abramovich, the owner. Johnson was considered a promising talent when he left West Ham, having played only 15 times in the league.
But although he has appeared competent going forward, his defensive failings were obvious. His fate was sealed this summer when Chelsea signed Juliano Belletti, with Paulo Ferreira as a reserve at right back.
Portsmouth also signed Papa Bouba Diop from Fulham for about £2 million. The midfield player signed a three-year contract. Dejan Stefanovic, the defender, moved in the opposite direction for £1 million. Gary O’Neil moved from Portsmouth to Middlesbrough for £5 million despite there being problems with the midfield player’s medical. Fulham could not match O’Neil’s wage demands, but they did sign Seol Ki Hyeon, the midfield player, from Reading, with Liam Rosenior, the defender, moving the other way. Fulham signed Danny Murphy, the midfield player, from Tottenham Hotspur.
Middlesbrough also signed Mohamed Shawky from Al Ahly for £650,000. The Egypt midfield player agreed a three-year contract after a trial. Middlesbrough sold Jason Euell to Southampton on a free transfer. The forward made only nine league starts since his move last summer, signed a two-year deal.
Much of the transfer business was completed in the Midlands, with Curtis Davies finally moving back into the top flight, with Aston Villa, after a series of battles with West Bromwich Albion this summer. The defender had handed in a transfer request and resigned the captaincy in an attempt to leave. Villa showed again that they were prepared to spend when they agreed a fee of £8 million rising to £10 million, plus a sell-on clause.
Davies joins on loan for the season, but the deal will become permanent next summer. Villa have signed Moustapha Salifou, a Togo midfield player, for an undisclosed fee from FC Wil, the Swiss club, on a one year contract. Derby County signed Kenny Miller from Celtic for £3 million, with the Scotland forward signing a three-year contract. Birmingham City have given a trial to Mohammed Kallon, the forward who has been released by AS Monaco, signed Wilson Palacios, the midfield player, on loan from Olimpia, the Honduran club.
In other deals, Wigan Athletic sold Caleb Folan to Hull City for £1 million and replaced him in attack with Marcus Bent, on loan from Charlton Athletic. The South London club also allowed Amdy Faye, the midfield player, to join Rangers on loan, but signed Sam Sodje, the defender, on loan from Reading.
As clubs frantically tried to fill the holes in their squad, many deals came to nothing. West Ham’s £6 million bid for Giles Barnes fell through because they failed to receive unspecified assurances from Derby about the winger, who has been injured. Tottenham also made a late inquiry. Villa had a £7 million offer for Nélson Marcos, the Benfica right back, turned down. Everton were unable to persuade Fenerbahçe to sell Stephen Appiah, the midfield player, and their attempts to sign Juan Román Riquelme, the Villarreal midfield player, also fell short. Birmingham were unable to sign Peter Luccin, the Atlético Madrid midfield player.
