One of the most talented forwards playing in the Barclays Premier League was on view at the Emirates Stadium last night, and so was Michael Owen. Harsh, of course, and probably not fair — but it was also cruel of the football fates to give Owen’s struggling Newcastle United two successive visits to Arsenal’s ground, where Emmanuel Adebayor has been in irrepressible form.
The Togo forward’s first-half goal was his ninth in seven matches. Owen, in contrast, has scored only once since October 7, nine league games ago. But then he is hardly playing in a team who have been going goal crazy, having failed to score in five of their past six matches in all competitions. Time and again he was on his marks on the shoulder of the last defender, set and ready to go, but the pass did not come.
So the service was poor, but the explosive pace of yesteryear was seldom in evidence. In the first half, he took possession 25 yards out with only William Gallas in front of him. But as he trundled, rather than burst forward, Gallas had only to stick out a leg to relieve him of possession.
Not that he could not run — far from it. As Newcastle captain, Owen seemed to want to show how much ground he could cover on the team’s behalf, but tracking back and occasionally putting his foot in — as Alexander Hleb will attest — are hardly the best use of Owen’s skills.
Adebayor, languid off the ball, looked lazy by comparison, but he was saving his energy for when it mattered and he was using his brain as well as his legs. When Arsenal were in wide positions, he pulled away, beyond the central defenders, so that if a cross came in he would be up against Stephen Carr or Charles N’Zogbia, rather than Steven Taylor or Caçapa. There was never any doubt that he would beat Carr to Mathieu Flamini’s cross to head home after 40 minutes. Confidence and great service — a blend that Owen cannot find at the moment.

Of course Michael Owen isn't that 'golden boy' anymore, but british people are being too unfair not recogning what he had already done in the english team.
Do you remember Ronaldo (Milan), when he injured his knee for a second time? After a while, he came back and helped Brazil win a World Cup.
I hope Owen may do the same, cause talent is something you can never lose or forget.

With Owen in the team, Newcastle are literally playing with 10 men. He is utterly useless! That is so selfish to always rely on service and on other people to feed you in unmarked and on your own in front of an empty net, if that's what being a striker is about, then anyone could do it. That no-service thing is complete nonsense, look at Adebayor, did he need service for the 2nd goal he scored in the cup tie? Or did he masterfully evade three challenges with skill and pace and then finish emphatically. All his work, that's what quality strikers can do. Owen has nothing - no size, no power, no pace, no technique. One of the most shockingly bad strikers i've ever seen in the premier league.
Strahill Sabev, London,
Owen has mostly himself to blame for where he is. Not content with Liverpool he moves to Real Madrid where failed to shine barely describes his time there. And because he now has a wage expectation that does not take into account both limited ability now his electric pace has deserted him and a games played record that would make Darren Anderton look more like Superman than sick note, only a desperate club like Newcastle would accommodate his return to English football. From national hero when he scored against Argentina to a 5' 6" Alan Shearer replacement in the space of 10 years. Oh, how the once mighty have fallen!

It is a shame that the quality of a player like Michael Owen is being wasted at a club like Newcastle. On his day, he is still without doubt one of the, if not the, most clinical finishers in world football. I just wish Mourinho had had sense and signed him for Chelsea when he had the chance!
