Arsène Wenger arrived with a weakened team and left with his team weakened. In life, it can take years for the psychological impact of trauma to be revealed. In football, timespans are always shorter and we will know by the end of the season what this day has done to Arsenal. In prime position to win the Premier League and with Champions League aspirations, exiting the FA Cup, in itself, will not overly afflict them but the scale of defeat and its manner was potentially brutalising. Might this affect the title race? “Hope so,” Sir Alex Ferguson said with a smile.
“I’m confident we’ll recover,” said Wenger and Arsenal did, impressively, after being hammered by Tottenham in the Carling Cup, but on that occasion they could cite having played a second-string team and had more possession than Spurs. Here, there was nothing to cling to. United, too, were minus key men: Cristiano Ronaldo, suffering from a tummy bug, Ryan Giggs, Owen Hargreaves and Carlos Tevez rested, Paul Scholes on the bench. Wenger moaned about the pitch being “a disgrace” but it did not seem to affect United. They were unstoppable.
The symbol of the game arose when, with his team 4-0 up, Nani ran 30 yards, keeping the ball up with his head. It was a gesture that did nothing to dispel William Gallas’s suggestion United can be “arrogant” but it also hurt deeply. Justin Hoyte, who Nani tortured all match, lashed out at the winger and Matthieu Flamini steamed in with a tackle that might have caused an amputation had Nani not jumped out of its way. Gallas kicked the Portuguese with the referee not looking and they squared up. Ferguson felt Gallas should have joined Emanuel Eboue, who received a straight red card for leading with a high boot when he jumped into Patrice Evra. Ferguson did agree with Wenger’s assessment that Nani had been “disrespectful, but he’s a young player and maybe he will learn”. Ferguson added: “He [Nani] shouldn’t be doing that. On one hand it took courage but on the other it was needless and we’ve had a word with him.” Moments before his peacock display, Nani had created United’s final goal, dancing past poor Hoyte to cross to the back post where Darren Fletcher scored with an emphatic header. It was the Scot’s best club display in years and even then he did not make the top three of United performers. The best, Anderson, was substituted to a standing ovation. When else has the arrival of Paul Scholes on a pitch ever weakened a side?
Wenger, missing eight players through illness and injury, and a ninth, Bacary Sagna, because of a bereavement, decided not to start with Gael Clichy, Flamini or Emmanuel Adebayor, who all had hamstring problems. Flamini and Adebayor should be fit, he said, for Wednesday’s visit of AC Milan and how Arsenal need the presence and aggression given them by that pair. They were so meek.
By half-time United were three up, it could have been double that, and memories were turning to the 6-1 thrashing at Old Trafford in February 2001. Ferguson praised his players for making amends for their flatness in last week’s Manchester derby. From minute one, they coursed with purpose and Rooney’s return was significant. He had already been through on goal, only for Jens Lehmann to beat him to the ball, and Anderson had menaced the German with a volley, before Rooney scored United’s first after a Nani corner. Nicklas Bendtner cleared, Anderson showed superior appetite to Cesc Fabregas and won a header to send the ball back into the six-yard box. Rooney rose ahead of Armand Traore and sent the ball skimming off his head and into the net. It was his first home goal since November. Four minutes later, Nani, doing his best Ronaldo impression, cruised past Hoyte and crossed into the six-yard box, where spindly Fletcher outmuscled the strapping Gallas to score.
Moments of alarm for United were few. Evra blocked an Alex Hleb volley and that was about it. Ferguson’s tyros kept finding enjoyments. Nani switched wings constantly, unable to decide whether he preferred victimising Hoyte or Traore. There was Anderson,
playing passes while looking the other way. Rooney went close with a left-footed volley and scuffed another attempt, having peeled cleverly away from Hoyte.
Late saves by Lehmann to twice foil Louis Saha helped keep the score down. The best goal was the third. Michael Carrick lobbed a left-footed pass down the centre and Nani controlled right-footed and slammed the ball beyond Lehmann left-footed. He celebrated with a back-flip but it was Arsenal whose world was now upside down.

it's good to see all the gooners with as much class as their team.
so eduardo was persistently fouled? it makes a change from being allowed to hang around offside and use his hands, I suppose. even if it's not actually true.
peter, united's first choice midfield would (according to fergie anyway) be ronaldo, hargreaves, scholes, giggs. none of them started. throw in gary neville and tevez sitting it out and you're looking at half a team at best. whichever way you cut it, you got outplayed by a team with park and fletcher in it. I too would like to see van persie and adebayor come to old trafford. then you will have no excuse.
seems the pitch wasn't so bad that nani couldn't do a bit of showboating. at least the old trafford pitch is a decent size.
as for maggie may blaming lehmann - he was the only arsenal player who could hold his head up. he prevented at least three goals with excellent stops. and he managed to keep his temper.

Players missing from united's first 11: Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo, Tevez and Neville (arguably Hargreaves).
Players missing from Arsenal's first 11: Sagna, Clichy, Flamini, Rosicky, Adebayor.
So, is it that Arsenal's team was vastly more depleted than united's, or is it that their reserves are nowhere near good enough?
Don't worry media, if you say it often enough people must believe you. Poor Arsenal.
Des, Dublin,
So Arsenal's young reserves get them to a Carling Cup Final and Arsenal fans can't stop telling us how great the Arsenal youth system is and that the reserve team is full of world beaters who can manfully step into the breach! Now Spurs and United beat Arsenal with a mixture of first team and reserves and the self same fans are deriding the results by claiming the accomplishments are diminished by Wenger fielding these self same afformentioned future world beaters!
Wake up Arsenal fans you can't have it both ways!
Also for a manager that has supposedly prioritised his trophies and this one is down the list he seemed pretty bitter about it yesterday! Even the Old Trafford Groundsman got more than his fair share of the blame yesterday!
But oh as usual he never saw Gallas kick out at Nani!
Jacko, Manchester, UK
How right of Jonathan Northcroft to highlight Anderson's performance. We know Rooney and Ronaldo are the leaders in this team but in two years Anderson will be the star man. This season he has overshadowed both Fabregas (twice) and Gerrard, who are apparently the top midfield men in England.
It is something special to watch the left footed central midfielder, Gerson, Overath, Van Hanagem, Hagi, Rivelino and Davids were all very special to watch. Anderson is one to follow these.
David, Guildford, UK
Peter Hogg; point of order: Keane's tackle never ended Haaland's career. Haaland retired because of an injury to his OTHER knee.
AND how can you say this was Utd at it's best "with the exception of Hargreaves, Ronaldo and Tevez". Surely then, this is Utd at 73% strength?
What should have happened to Gallas then? I like him as a player, but I'm sure even he admits that he was lucky the ref didn't see him. Clear red card. This was just another typical Arsenal display when they have a hard game against Utd: petulant. Throwing pizzas? Keown taunting van Nistelrooy?
Nani was naughty taunting Arsenal like that, but at least Fergie had a word with him afterwards and told him to cut it out. This makes a refreshing change from Wenger who never seems to see any of his team's infringements.
Nev, Amsterdam,
Why are Arsenal fans such sore losers? jeez, that wasn't even Man Utd's strongest team and we still routed Arsenal 4-0 and that score could've easily been double that. Arsenal are sounding like Chelsea of last season and blaming everything on injury. Man Utd has injuries as well and we still show up and win matches. Arsenal were outclassed and outplayed by the better team.
Kema, London,
I have to say that I don't watch that much football these days, but I saw yesterdays match. If all matches were that exciitng to watch I would watch more of these over paid ballerinas. Re the showboating of Nani...surely the pitch is a stage to show off what you can do, where else are you going to do it?
Half of these footballers forget that they are there to entertain the thousands of people who support them week in week out which these days is no mean feat in terms of taking a family to see a game in the premiere league!
Nick , Cranbrook, Kent, U.K.
Arsenal can play the illness/injury card if they like, has never washed with any other club, won't wash with Arsenal.
Man Utd simply out played them at their own game, Anderson is only 19 and was superb, had a mention for the Arsenal Fabregas.
Then the second half they seemed to have instruction to injure a Utd player.
And Nicolas Kozeschnik, I fail to see how Wiley was Utd's 12th Man, had be been Arsenal would have definately lost more players, I seem to remember Utd fans complaing about Webb's performance at the Emirates earlier in the season, where so many fouls were not given and on lead to Arsenal managing to scrape an equaliser.
The simple fact about yesterday - Arsenal shots on target = ZERO, simple can't win games it you can get at goal.
Glen Banyard, Ely, UK
I think before Man U or their manager take the high ground on sportsmanship, where was fergie when keane admitted his tackle ended haglands carreer, on purpose? As usual nowhere. Don't give me this was a weak Man U team, this was their best, with the exception of Hargreaves, Ronaldo and Tevez. Do I need to list the 9 arsenal absentees, or the fact that Van Persie has been absent virtually all season. This was no mighty tactical decision by Fergie, the press told him all week that arsenal were seriously depleted. Can't wait to see a fit Van Persie and Adeybayor take on the erratic Ferdinand in April, things could be so very different. Once again Fergie is up to his tricks and attempts to influence the FA, red card gallas for a petulant kick. He will never be regarded in the same class as Matt Busby, a true gentleman of the game, who would never stoop so low

Can't agree more with you Monty, Bermuda. Never seen such an awful performance...
Adam Harding, Putney, UK
How much longer is Wenger gonna keep using Lehmann? He should be on his way out now, before his blunders shames the club .. again and again!
Maggie May Gunners 4-ever, Selangor, Malaysia
The Old Trafford pitch is a disgrace to football. Sunday league council pitchâs are in better conditions. Alan Wiley was Sir Alexâs 12th man in his many strange decsions all match that went hugely favoruable to United. You could even argue he was a United fan. Justin Hoyte, Armand Traore and Emmanuel Eboue are simply not good enough at this level and Gilberto Silvaâs days are numbered as are Jens Lehmanns. Good luck United in the FA Cup but the Premier League Title is coming South to the Emirates â even Ferguson admits that!
Nicolas Kozeschnik, Hertfordshire, England
Is juggling the ball more disrespectful than holding the ball under the goalkeeper's nose after taking it around him to score (Thierry Henry/Chris Kirkland two seasons ago) - you need to get that selective memory sorted Arsene, people are starting to laugh at you.
Stephen Wilson, Plymouth, UK
Agree with star man rating for Anderson .He is simply awesome. If he improves on this showing in the next few years he will be competing for ballon d'Or ! What a talent.
noel , ta'Xbiex, Malta
United was very impressive last night but let us not write Arsenal off at this point. Have no doubt that the quality in the Arsenal team will be demonstrated on Wednesday night.
It is very unusual to see Arsenal lose - especially by such a wide margin, the team certainly didn't play with their usual passing flair. Rooney was simply brilliant which bodes well for the national squad. Wayne is well accustomed to the physicality of the English game but Eduardo is only just learning to be more robust, he was the subject of many nasty tackles on Saturday that went without censure. After half time Eduardo's attempt at standing up to the United defence was greeted with a yellow card, incredible that he was reprimanded after merely trying to be aggressive in kind after 45 mins of being kicked about.
What sometimes holds Arsenal back is an inability to be covertly aggressive; the skills of European footballers are overshadowed by the physicality of the English game.
Kim, Loughton, UK
that'll learn 'em
steve, brixton,
Why focus your headline on Rooney, who we're bored of hearing about, when there was a one-off chance to praise the normally obscure Fletcher? The man scored two goals for goodness' sake, give him his due. I'm an Arsenal fan so it's especially bad that we let this guy score twice, but you might as well let him have his time in the spotlight, rather than keep it on the same old usual suspect in Rooney.
H.W.Davies, Ware,
Forget Nani's show. There are a lot of things that the Arsenal players shouldn't have done too. Like Flamini's tackle and Gallas' little piece of 'sportsmanship' one minute later. Or the attack on van Nistelrooy some years ago, or the pizza-gate or, or, or...
James, Thessaloniki, Greece
It shows where the FA Cup is these days.
Come wednesday, Utd will be be behind and Arsenal will be in front, and it will be that way in the EPL as well.
D.Dent, Ipswich,
Monty in Bermuda, what an utterly stupid comment to make.
John, London,
Not sure that I accept that Nani was show-boating. He was facing his own goal and keeping the ball up like that and moving fairly quickly was the only way he could keep the ball when the Arsenal clods were hacking away at him.
Good to see all those empty spaces in E stand towards the end of the game. Safe journey back to London, lads.
David, Poole,
As a paying customer at OT, players like Nani can "show boat all they like" for me. Fabregas will likely do it next week (I will enjoy the same) and Wenger will no doubt see it different; just like he does with everything else that portrays Arsenal in a negative light. Carefull Arsen, if you happen to be looking the other way again you are going to blow the Premiership with your usual petulant behaviour. Shame because you have footballing team with class in abundance.

Judgeing by the display by Hoyte it's little wonder Wenger hasn't got any Englishmen in his team.
Monty, Bermuda,
Nani shouldn't display his skill because it's disrespectful? What's the point of having such a skill if you can't use it where it matters? Or have I missed the point? If a player wants to "showboat" his or her skills on the pitch it may have some reflection on the opposition team's inability to prevent it in the first place....long live showboating, it's one of the few redeeming features of an increasingly ugly game.

a terrible defeat for arsenal
Antoine, Warsaw, Poland
Gallas and Toure's partnership was destablised because they constantly had to cover for their woeful full-backs - Traore and Hoyte. Bacary Sagna and Clichy were really missed. I do not know just what Wenger keeps seeing in Hoyte and Traore. Traore and Hoyte's positional play is so juvenile that both were again exposed in the 5-1 drubbing at White Hart Lane. I notice that Traore can hardly use his right leg - he is very handicapped, defensively. It is also now clear that Gilberto is fast becoming a liablility and Flamini is now the main man. It is also baffling how in 90 minutes our centre-forward - Bendtner could not even manage a shot on goal - terrible!
