Nicklas Bendtner is convinced Martin Taylor's tackle on Eduardo was not malicious and has urged Arsenal to move on. The Danish striker played alongside Taylor during a season-long loan spell at St Andrews and supports Birmingham City's claims the challenge was clumsy rather than spiteful.
"Eduardo showed good skills to go around one defender and used quick feet when he saw the other defender, but was taken out," Bendtner said.
"The referee had no decision but to send Martin off. Due to being at Birmingham I know Martin is not a player like this. But given what happened you can't say it was anything other than a red card.
"Eduardo is a strong character and good person. He's done really well at Arsenal and I hope he will be back as quickly as possible."
While Bendtner applauded the decision by referee Mike Dean to show Taylor a straight red, he claims the official ultimately cost Arsenal two priceless points.
Dean awarded a penalty against Gael Clichy, even through the Gunners defender won the ball from Stuart Parnaby, which James McFadden rifled home in the 91st minute.
But Bendtner, who replaced Eduardo, has sought to rally Arsenal as they struggle through a crucial period of the season by reminding them they remain in control of the title race.
"It was a terrible day because of all the things that happened - the injury and the decisions," he said. "We're down because the decision has had an effect on the title race.
"When you lose points because of a mistake from the referee and not because of the way you play, then it's even worse. The injury made it difficult but we knew we had to try and win the game because it was very important for us.
"We did everything we could but then a mistake from the referee cost us the game. From the replays it seems that the referee got it wrong. The ball was kicked really hard so obviously Gael got a touch on the ball.
"The linesman said nothing, so we feel hard done by. I'm really sorry the decision went against Gael. But the title race is still in our hands and we just have to do the best we can."
Possibly the only respite from a bleak Saturday were Theo Walcott's first Premier League goals, the second a sensational finish of his own marauding run.
"Theo did very well for both goals. He's been working really hard, is improving a lot and it was fantastic for him," he added.

I hope Eduardo recovers fully, as he is a joy to watch when he plays football. The arsenal fans may just want to watch the first 10 seconds of the video clip below.

notice the young man tackling Nani. Ironic or what!
P.Sharkson, Manchester,
zod of henley, a famous football town, misses the point in moaning about my comments.
arsenal as a club have saved the premier ship by competing wirh M.U.over 10 yrs.
wigan r.l. wrecked their sport by winning 7 years on the run.
as a football fan first i am grateful that wenger came along and stopped this happening with united winning for years.
like all people with strenghs wenger has appalling weaknesses, the main one being unable to see the awful cheating and fouling by his teams over the years.
he has never seen anything in his interviews they did but with the other team he seems to have x-ray vision.
last night a city player was sent off for a timid kick on an everton player and yet gallas for his assault on nani-nothing.
i suggest zod sticks to shooting pheasants, the main sport round there.

Well said Yulia Melnikova - a voice of calm reason amid a sea of reactionary rubbish!!!

A few people here have commented that the tackle was "over ball height". I must ask them, are they sure their eyesight is ok? It's abundantly clear from the photos that Taylor's boot is level with Eduardo's ankle. The challenge was clumsy and reckless, as tackles often are when a skillful player outclasses an average one. I would have hoped that a little maturity be shown by people but instead Taylor receives death threats which is absolutely disgusting.
Scott, Tokushima,
Taylor has played over 200 games in his professional career. To date, he has received 2 red cards (including Saturday) and 6 bookings. He is a central defender.
Take another look at that record before calling him a 'thug'. There are many Premiership players who can amass that in 10 games. It's about time this hysteria died down, don't profess to judge a player on one tackle. Time to separate criticism for the tackle (which, though accidental, was a straight red) and criticism for the man, which has been hysterical and woefully uninformed. Best of luck to both men in resuming their careers.
Sophie, Liverpool,
The tackle was not over the top of the ball, it was simply late, take a good look at the replays. I'm an Arsenal season ticket holder and was gutted that not only did we get robbed of 2 points while united murdered Newcastle, but Spurs won a trophy! But we have to stop all this nonsense about Taylor being "suspended indefinitely" or banned for life. It was an extremely unfortunate incident that could have happened to anyone. As for the comments essentially alleging racism, this is utterly ridiculous. Are we honestly suggesting that fouling an English player would cause more outrage than a foreign player? That Wenger retracted his initial comments should be cause enough to realise this was a freak accident. We all wish Eduardo the most speedy recovery.
Yulia Melnikova, Sydney, Australia
Typical Mancunian comments from Smith and Rezwan. Why dont you tell us about the fact that Arsenal are the most fouled team over the last 10 years? Remember when Man U kicked Rayes off the park? Go on - tell me about Man U's 90 yellow cards last season.

I am English and I support Manchester united. The tackle was over ball height and was intended to harm. It may well be that Taylor did not intend to break Eduardo's leg but it certainly intended to cause him pain judging by how high his studs were. I have been absolutely outraged by the comments of the pundits on Tv saying that Taylor is not 'that type of player'. He clearly is a dirty player. If a thief goes to burgle a house and ends up killing someone, it is murder. How would we have felt if say Bendtner broke Wayne Rooney's leg in the same way?
Don't tell me that Taylor did not mean it. Don't tell me that it was Edduardo's fault because he was 'too fast'. Do say that Martin taylor is a thug and should not be allowed to play again. If murdering a player's career is not enough for English football to make changes, what would it take?
Joe Hammond, London, London
I agree with Walter H PothMann. Just saying that there was no malicious intent is not good enough. He needs to take responsibility. These players are paid thousands of Pounds per week for no reason. being a responsible player is part of the job. Taylor should be banned as long as Eduardo is out, if not more.
Those who are having hard time blaming Taylor at all, imagine Lampard or Gerrard at the receiving end of that kind of tackle and the the player who committed the foul is a foreigner . That will put things into perspective.
Hasan, Minnesota, USA
Its hard to be sympathetic towards Taylor. When his foot connected with Eduardos shin it was higher than ball level..later pictures show the situation after Eduardo's leg had collapsed at a right angle and are confusing in that it appears that the tackle is around his ankle area..its not..its at the point where his leg is broken at aright angle...you can actually see the studs on Eduardos boot as his foot lies sidefoot down on the pitch.Reckless in the extreme.
CLIVE LEAH, NR LEEDS, W.YORKS
It was a horrible tackle with a terrible consequence for Eduardo who is a talent that anyone who loves football will miss during his hopefully speedy recovery. However Martyn Taylor is certainly no kind of malicious player and will be utterly devastated by what has happened. He was beaten by a skillful player leading to a horrific outcome
Graham Rickard, Manchester, UK
the players today know exactly what they are doing.
I would suspent Taylor as long as Eduardo is out of action.
Period, one has to set an example.
walter h pothmann, kihei, USA
Arsenal did not do enough to win the game; as simple as that. Everything else are just attempts to offer excuses for the missed points - pathetic!!
S K LIn, HOng Kong, CHina
Taylor set out to intimidate a more skilful player. H e deserves a long ban pour decourager les autres. Ignore what his mates say they lack the distance judgemnent requires.
Thomas, edinburgh, scotland
I do find it funny how Taylor is being made to look like an angel!?! People are saying he is not a malicious player, so who is, and when they find them surely they should be banned? If you look at the tackle he is at least a foot or two above the ball and he is looking the other way which shows his malicious intent. He should face criminal damages.

steve, london, uk
wengers rant was pitiful esp as he could have finished the game at old trafford with 8 men.
to say his players had a right to kick at a nineteen year old for
showing his outstanding skill when his team were 4-0 up shows his selective morality.
the player at birmingham was injured because his foot and studs were in the ground.
arsenal have got one of the worst red card records in the premiership and it is about time the F.A. DID SOMETHING ABOUT HIM.
rod smith, manchester, england
Well done Nicklas. Finally some maturity and professionalism displayed by someone representing Arsenal.
