Joe Hart will remain with the England Under-21 squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Poland at Molineux, despite Stuart Pearce naming an experimental group. The Manchester City goalkeeper, who has been in fine form this season, had been touted for a senior call-up, but the England Under21 head coach has been able to keep hold of Hart, whom Fabio Capello has described as “very interesting”.
Pearce left out several of his established players, such as Tom Huddlestone,
Steven Taylor, Mark Noble and Theo Walcott, and called up Fraizer Campbell,
the Manchester United striker on loan with Hull City, as well as Scott Dann
and Daniel Fox, the Coventry City defenders.
Ankergren charged
Casper Ankergren, the Leeds United goalkeeper, is facing a three-match ban and
a large fine after being charged with improper conduct for allegedly
throwing a bottle at Swindon Town supporters. Ankergren has been charged by
the FA after home fans at the County Ground reported the incident to police
after Leeds’s 1-0 Coca-Cola League One win on March 1.
The Danish goalkeeper is alleged to have thrown the plastic bottle at fans
after being taunted by them at the end of the match and he has until April 1
to respond. If he is suspended, his absence will be a huge blow to Gary
McAllister as he bids to win promotion and secure the manager’s job at
Elland Road on a permanent basis.
Pienaar deal on cards
Everton are confident that Steven Pienaar, the South Africa midfield player,
will sign a permanent deal with the club. Pienaar, who turned 26 on Monday,
joined Everton on loan from Borussia Dortmund last summer, but with a £2.5
million fee having been agreed with the German club, it is now solely a case
of ironing out personal terms. Arsenal and Valencia are rumoured to be
monitoring the situation in the event that negotiations, which are at an
advanced stage, break down.
Pienaar is a doubt for the Barclays Premier League game at home to West Ham
United on Saturday evening after picking up a knock in the 1-0 defeat by
Fulham at the weekend.
Rotherham for sale
Rotherham United have been put up for sale after they entered administration
for the second time in as many years. The Coca-Cola League Two club have
been handed a ten-point penalty, which will leave them six points behind the
play-offs places. The club took the decision after a buyer withdrew because
of the terms of the lease for their Millmoor ground. They owe several
hundred thousand pounds to Revenue & Customs after being unsuccessful
with an insurance claim for summer flood damage. “Administration was a
necessary step to ensure a safe future,” Denis Coleman, the chairman, said.
