An astonishing match at White Hart Lane was not only memorable for eight fantastic goals, but also for the latest horrendous tackle to blight Barclays Premier League football.
Mike Riley, the referee, was making his return to the middle having been rested for last weekend’s Premier League programme after criticism over his handling of the 1-1 draw between Fulham and Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, March 8.
His decision not to send off Ashley Cole, the Chelsea and England left back, for his studs-up lunge at Alan Hutton, the Tottenham Hotspur right back, is again unlikely to endear him to his employers given the climate surrounding dangerous tackles.
Cole’s challenge on a player who had already missed almost a year of football with a broken leg while playing with Rangers demanded a straight red card instead of the yellow leniently presented by Riley.
What was more astonishing was the reaction from some Chelsea players, including John Terry, the captain, in appearing to protest Cole’s innocence as they massed round the official. Nearby Juande Ramos, the Tottenham head coach, came on to the pitch and Avram Grant, the Chelsea first-team coach, appeared to be becalmed by Steve Bennett, the fourth official.
Gustavo Poyet, the Tottenham assistant first-team coach, put his arm around Cole as the players walked down the tunnel and then spoke to Riley as he walked off. Ramos was more restrained after the match. “I just respect the decisions,” he said. “We’ve seen tackles which were much less serious which have earned red cards. We’re just very fortunate that there weren’t any injuries to any players, either Tottenham’s or Chelsea’s.”
Whether Chelsea will find themselves in hot water again with the FA this season remains to be seen. The club were fined £40,000 over the behaviour of their players in the match against Derby County at Pride Park in November. They were also fined £30,000 and warned about their future conduct after being charged with failing to control their players during the 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford in September.
“I didn’t see the incident as the assistant referee was in my way,” Grant said. “We need to respect his decision. The referee was two or three metres away.”
Respecting the decision or not, the incident will come under the spotlight in the coming days, especially after the fractured left fibula and dislocated ankle suffered by Eduardo da Silva, the Arsenal forward, after the challenge from Martin Taylor, of Birmingham City, as the spectre of dangerous play returned to the game.

You can jump tackle if you're a member of the Big 4.
I give you Kuyt on Neville earlier in the season, Cole last night, I'm sure other people could give many of their own examples.
If you're not a member of that exclusive club, the refs suddenly remember the directives and flash the cards.
Wiley was petrified last night with all those famous faces aggressively haranguing him.
I think when they see no marks from the little clubs respectfuly asking for a word, they're happy to flash the cards.
Disgraceful.
ps - John Terry parking on the disabled space and taking the fine. 'nuff said.
Nick, Liverpool,
the FA's "respect" (hahaha) agenda now lies in tatters. As long as they continue to tolerate the disgraceful behaviour by this long-standing hooligan, this kind of thing will go on. It is the worst incident since the disgraceful Keane/Stam/Russo affair at Old Trafford seven years ago. pathetic
Walter Cairns, Manchester, UK
The tackle was an absolute disgrace and Riley even more so due to his complete inability to act and send off Cole, if not for the tackle then for the disgraceful dissent that followed! Riley is a wet fish in a sense that he is scared off by any intimidation let alone Chelsea's bog standard 'let's get 5 or more players march towards the referee so he has to back track and gets scared off'...Disgraceful..The FA need to act on referees and start threatening them with fines for having dismal performances.
Alex, London/Leeds, UK
The FA are as bad as the players with their aims to do nothing other than increase their own salaries. The punishment now for Chelsea is a fine that will be meaningless with their fortunes. How about some suspensions or real discipline as we now know how fines are little more than a player's son or daughter's pocket money. Until this is resolved players will suffer horrendous injuries like Eduardo; Alan Hutton will be feeling a lucky man he wasn't forced off the pitch again.
Thom Mills, Manchester, UK
I don't think I 've ever seen so many "jump" tackles as I have this season.
When will refs realise that a jump tackle is the equivalent of ABH ?
When a player tackles with both feet off the ground whether an injury ensues or whether the tackler contacts the ball first, it should be an immediate red card.
Red, Bristol, England
The tackle was a socker and he should have gone.
And when will we get a ref with the nerve to flash yellows at any player backchatting. If that means 4 or 5 cards then so be it - it's the players fault.
A few games like that and it'd stop, but the FA and their pathetic, inept referees don't have the cojones.
J. Wilkes, Gloucester,
As we've all come to know and understand.... There is one rule for the big 4 and one rule for everyone else. The FA have neither the courage nor the inclination to make it otherwise, lest the Man U's & Chelsea's 'Take their ball away' and form a break-away European league.
Mesmo, London,
Riley had no problem booking Joe Cole and Robbie Keane for backchat to officials. Even though Ashley Cole's challenge should have been a red card the ref should have been consistent and give him another yellow card for the backchat when he was trying to book him for the challenge.
Gary Millar, Larne, UK
Terry's behaviour towards referees is inexcusable for a man with designs on the England captaincy. He comes across as a spoilt brat stomping his feet and throwing his toys out the pram, not a leader of men - no class, no dignity. Just as disgusting to see as Cole's tackle, moreso as he does it week in week out
Thom, Auckland, NZ
