Bryan Robson, the former Manchester United captain, is to rejoin the club as their global ambassador. Robson, who quit as Sheffield United manager last month, will initially work alongside Bobby Charlton.

"Since signing for the club in 1981, it has always been special to me," Robson said. "I enjoyed the happiest and most memorable times of my career at Old Trafford and it will be great to play a role in making the club even more successful."

Robson scored 97 goals in 434 appearances - an impressive return for a midfielder - during his 13 years at United where he won two league titles. He left in 1994 to join Middlesbrough as player/manager.

Alex Ferguson, the United manager, hailed Robson's return, calling him "a fantastic player and a fantastic person".

David Gill, United's chief executive, described Robson as one of the Old Trafford greats. "Bryan Robson was the outstanding player of his generation; skillful, fearless and totally committed," he said. "He is someone who remains close to the hearts of anyone who saw him play. His relationship with Manchester United supporters is second to none."
