How do you stop Cristiano Ronaldo? How do you stop the apparently unstoppable? The guy is a genius. I love watching him play, the way he glides almost effortlessly past opponents. Scoring 34 goals from the wing is not bad, either. But it is time for managers to say: “No more.” If you give him freedom, he will murder you. And that is what he has been doing, time and again. Surely it is time to man-mark him, to get in his face, to shadow his every move.
I am amazed that no one has tried this tactic. OK, it is negative, it goes against every grain of the beautiful game. Accuse me of being a spoilsport and I will plead guilty. But something has to be done. Otherwise, rivals may as well pack up and go home before kick-off. All hail the magnificent Portuguese, we are not worthy.
Ronaldo may even rise above this, shrug off his marker - the irritant gnat - and make a mockery of my theory. Maybe he is even better than we think he is; maybe there is no way to blunt his effervescence. Perhaps he is unstoppable. But let us see how he likes a stalking horse alongside him.
Years ago, the Italians turned it into an art form. Pick out the dangerman, attach your limpet, watch him squirm in frustration. Only recently, Carlo Ancelotti, the AC Milan coach, complained of such treatment meted out to Kaká, the brilliant Brazilian. With a one-on-one tracker, his influence waned. It can be done.
In my playing days, we used to call them “Nobbers”. And there's plenty about today who could do the job. Abou Diaby at Arsenal, Papa Bouba Diop at Fulham, John Obi Mikel at Chelsea, Lassana Diarra at Portsmouth. Rangy, athletic and lively lads who would be up for their up-close-and-personal assignment.
When I was at Gillingham we had a cup game against Tottenham Hotspur. Keith Peacock, our manager, said that he had no plans of using the man-to-man option on Glenn Hoddle. I thought: “Hang on a minute, I'm not sure about this. Is this wise?” Hoddle sprayed the ball everywhere, he ran the show, he ruined us. And we lost 4-2.
When Ronaldo gets the ball, he is off and running. Unpredictable, uncatchable. Head up, glancing around for available team-mates, weaving his magic. Yet cut out his possession at source, suffocate his free spirit and sow doubt into his mind, and you have a chance. A slight chance.
I hate to advocate this. Ronaldo is maturing into one of the most exciting players on the planet. Long may he prosper. But for every shimmy and shake of his hips, there must be a solution. At least give it a go. Bring on the Nobber.

I work overseas and due to the amount of sports channels available, and my lifelong love of all things UTD, have been fortunate to see all UTD's matches"live".
Ronaldo is a joy to watch. He attracts people to the ball and this season has learned to release the ball earlier and then use his pace intelligently to get into goal scoring positions.
This often means Rooney pulling wide and supplying the killer pass for Ronaldo to notch.
The understanding the two have coupled with the enjoyment the two have from playing together (as a UTD fan) is great to watch.
People have siad that he was kept quiet against Liverpool on Sunday. Okay he didn't go on any dazzling runs but could have bagged a hat-trick and should definitely have doubled his tally.
I think he has evolved from a winger into something of a goal poacher.
Hopefully (for us) he can only get better and him and Rooney could be the fulcrum of our side for seasons to come.

Coming from an Aussie rules playing background, you did not need your coach to tell you that if your opposing player is getting more possession than you, then you need to get closer to them...if only to increase your own chance of getting the ball.
It is still a game of 11v11, so everyone has a man.

man-mark Ronaldo...and then what do you do about Rooney, Giggs, Nani, Tevez....?
bob digi, bradford,
Letâs not exagerate Ronaldoâs talent. Yes heâs the best player around at the moment, but I am yet to see him rip apart a top team. His goal against Liverpool was Reinaâs fault, he should have cleaned him out. As for Ronaldoâs free kicks heâs only scored 2 or 3 and it is actually the new balls that do the work, I think weâve all played with a 99p ball on the beach, just give it a whack and nobody knows where itâs going. (But credit to him for realising this).

yes premiership managers please read this article and man mark ronaldo....please do....
ronaldo is so quick and agile he drifts across the pitch, a man marker would have no chance in shadowing him the whole game
and even if he did manage too...great...just means that the opposing teams defensive midfielder is occupied with ronaldo, and Rooney Nani Anderson Tevez Saha Giggs Scholes all have the freedom of the pitch....
ronaldo is an unstoppable force either way you look at it
alex, st albans,
Well firstly you dont have the audacity to tackle him in or around the edge of the penalty, or else the compulsary penalty or free kick will be awarded for his dive and triple summersault. Next having a referee who isnt hell bent on reducing your team to ten men would again give you some sort of a chance. Finally Ronaldo is without doubt the most exciting attacking player in the Premiership and sometimes worth the admission fee alone. But couple his extraordinary talent with the type of refereeing expected at Old Trafford and he is pretty much unplayable.

People in the crowd should bring mirrors and point them at Ronaldo. He will be distracted by his reflection and stop watching the ball.

Ronaldo switches wings at will with either Nani or Giggs. Will a man-marker switch with him? What would that do to the balance of the opposing side.
By the way, I love the idea that Gillingham's failure to man-mark Hoddle was the reason they lost. Because the Gills' ability to man mark out of the game one of the most feared players in world football in the 80s is legendary...

I have to agree with Dave, if Utd were a one man team fine, but even though i do agree he is the best player at Utd there are others who would exploit the space opened up by the special treatment to devastating effect. i dont know what the answer is but looking at the table no one else does either, lol
David, Melbourne,
Pete, was Fabio Aurelio marking Ronaldo when he scored as well?
Neil, Dublin, Ireland
Ask Fabio Aurelio - Ronaldo could not get past him on Sunday
Pete, London,
It's been tried and it requires two "nobber's" often with a third to pick up the ball. Trouble is that this simply creates space for others in Man Utd team.
