Chelsea and Everton are furious that their Premier League match has been moved to accommodate television schedules.
The two were meant to play on Saturday, April 19, at Goodison Park but the Premier League have moved the match to the previous Thursday so it can be broadcast by Sky Sports.
Chelsea accused the Premier League of giving title rivals Manchester United and Arsenal an advantage.
"We believe the decision to hold the match on Thursday April 17 undermines the sporting integrity of the competition by giving our rivals for the Premier League title an unnecessary competitive advantage at a critical time of the season, with more recovery time from their previous match and preparation time for their next fixture when we have to play two games during the same period," Chelsea said in a statement.
"The decision sets a dangerous precedent in changing match days still further when fixture congestion does not exist and when a sensible solution regarding other television matches that weekend was suggested."
Chelsea also expressed anger at the inconvenience for fans travelling to Liverpool, while Everton, chasing fourth place, also wanted the match to be played on the weekend.
"We feel this decision sets an uncomfortable precedent of moving fixtures from a weekend to midweek and, whilst we fully support and back our broadcast partners, we do hope that common sense prevails in the future and sensible alternatives can be reached," an Everton statement said.
Chelsea hosts Wigan Athletic on April 14 and will now travel to Everton three days later, while Manchester United and Arsenal both play on Saturday, April 19, with both matches televised.
José Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager, was holding talks with Inter Milan yesterday with the Portuguese being tipped to take charge at the Italian club next season, it has been reported. Portuguese media said that Mourinho, 44, had left Lisbon earlier in the day, supposedly to discuss a contract with Massimo Moratti, the Inter president.

I had booked airplane tickets from Rome, Italy and they are non refundable. It is disappointing, very disappointing because they sholud have more respect for the fans.
pietro, Italy/Rome,
We have allready bought airplane tickets with ryanair leaving friday from sweden. Non refundable. Thought that when the tickets were for sale they couldn't move the date. But they could..
Carlos, Stan,
...didn't they do the same thing to us (Chelsea) last year in the last few games?
There is a definite bias against Chelsea -I think Mourinho was aware of this a long time ago with some of his comments.
When you take a broad view of all the FA decisions on discipline, some of the shocking referees decisions etc. Its like Chelsea have an extra team to play against in the premiership.
Dan, London,
Ridiculous. What on earth was the logic for pushing this back to a Thursday? Was there ever a PL match played on a Thurdsday before (aside from over the xmas & Easter period)?
TV is ruining the game.
Is there any way for the clubs to appeal this decision?
Claire, Dublin,
I purchased a ticket for this game on Tuesday 25th when they went on sale. The ticket is for my wife's uncle whio is flying from Slovakia on Friday 18th April, with this due to be his first visit to a Premiership game. The ticket was received with Saturday 19th April 3pm printed on it.
How is it possible that they can bring the date forward AFTER the tickets have gone on sale?
Martin Clark, Ormskirk,
Everton also made representations to keep the game on the weekend. Chelsea also had to rearrange the Wigan fixture to Monday for TV coverage with Setanta - only three days before.
This decision serves no-one. The PL have talked some bilge about the EU demanding 138 games be televised in the season, but nothing to do with it being these teams or that they had to play on a Thursday.
A lot of hot air was expounded on the 39th game. This decision is part of the same abuse of the sporting competition by the TV channels. It shoudl be opposed with equal strength.
I'm intrigued by Chelsea's final words: "However this decision is one step too far and we reserve all rights on our position."
Harry, London,
A disgrace. The real fans don't matter. Fair play in the Premiership title race doesn't matter. Nothing matters except Sky's tv schedule and ensuring that Man Utd win the league simply to maintain the interest of millions of people who have never attended a football match in their lives. When is someone going to stand up to this blatant corruption and incredible abuse of the modern professional game?
