Win Sky+HD for a year and a trip to Barcelona

Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is unlikely to admit it in public, but he must acknowledge that big is beautiful if he is to get his hands on the Barclays Premier League trophy again. Arsenal have played some of the best football in England this season, although they are likely to end it empty-handed for the third year in a row unless they can hit the jackpot by winning the Champions League for the first time.
Wenger was in no mood to conduct a post mortem after the draw that extinguished Arsenal’s flickering title hopes - with his extraordinary, fist-clenching dance on the sidelines revealing his true emotions – but a look at their recent results provides at least some clues. A dismal run of one win in their past seven league matches, including three successive draws at home, suggests that Arsenal have run out of steam, lacking the stamina and strength in depth to translate their potential into prizes.
The closest Wenger came to offering an explanation for his team’s alarming slump was a familiar lament regarding injuries to Eduardo da Silva, Robin van Persie and Tomas Rosicky, which although partially true also misses the point. It is the manager’s job to ensure that his squad is well enough equipped to cope with every eventuality and, judged by the harshest standards in this regard, he can be said to have failed. With the luxurious benefit of hindsight, Wenger’s decision not to strengthen his squad in January looks to be an oversight, particularly when coupled with the sale of Lassana Diarra to Portsmouth.
Wenger became used to coping with a smaller squad as the club were funding the new stadium, but it appears as if such pragmatism has given way to a dangerous point of principle. For all Arsenal’s rotten luck with injuries, particularly to Van Persie, it is not as if he they have been unduly unfortunate. Chelsea have had John Terry, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech out for long periods, while Manchester United have had to do without Gary Neville, Owen Hargreaves, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney at various points.
Wenger does not have the funds available to Avram Grant or Sir Alex Ferguson, but with a £70 million cash surplus in Arsenal’s most recent half-year accounts, he could have brought in some reinforcements.
“We have a rich budget and a big potential when the stadium’s paid,” Wenger said. “I don’t know where it went wrong. At the moment that is not my worry – at the moment my worry is to prepare for [the Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Liverpool on] Tuesday night. At the moment I wouldn’t like to make conclusions. I know we can qualify on Tuesday because we have the quality. That is more important, but at the end of the season I will see what we can say about this year.
“We go until the end of the season and then see what it is like. It was difficult to predict that Eduardo, Van Persie and Rosicky would be out together and for such a long time. The turning point this year was very tight and we started when we lost Eduardo and also didn’t have Van Persie or Rosicky. I think if we’d got everybody back we’d still be up there.”
Eduardo’s horrific broken leg in the game away to Birmingham City may come to be seen as the turning point in Arsenal’s season for a whole raft of reasons, as the 2-2 draw gave them a six-point lead over United that over the course of the past six weeks has turned into a six-point deficit, but as much as the injuries, it is fatigue that has cost them.
Gaël Clichy’s 18-minute cameo against Liverpool on Saturday was his 43rd appearance of the season and it showed, while Cesc Fàbregas and Mathieu Flamini made their 41st and 40th appearances respectively, when one or both could have done with being rested before the trip to Anfield.
Given his age – 20 – Fàbregas in particular would benefit from greater protection, but Wenger lacks that luxury. To his credit, the manager refused to hide behind the age of his team, although he insisted that the season would still be regarded as a success even if it finished without silverware. The Frenchman is particularly enamoured of Nicklas Bendtner, who underlined his promise by scoring his seventh goal of the season after Peter Crouch had given Liverpool the lead.
“We’re making progress compared to last season,” Wenger said. “We’ve been going for the championship the whole season and still are, although now it’s become a little bit more difficult. I feel as well some young players have made a big progress and next year they will be better players. Players like Bendtner, next year you can consider him a real striker. The young players have done remarkably well and carried the team through.”
With a few more experienced players alongside them, however, Arsenal’s youngsters could have carried the team even farther. How they rated
Arsenal (4-4-2): M Almunia 5 J Hoyte 5 K Touré 6 W Gallas 6 A Traoré 5 E Eboue Y 5 F Fàbregas 6 Gilberto Silva 5 M Flamini 6 N Bendtner 6 T Walcott 6 Substitutes: G Clichy (for Traoré, 72min), A Hleb (for Flamini, 81). Not used: J Lehmann, A Song Billong. Next: Manchester United (a).

Peter Fröjdfeldt has been appointed to referee the Champions League quarter-final, second leg between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield tomorrow. The teams drew 1-1 in the first leg last week. The Swedish official took charge of Arsenal’s first leg against Juventus at the same stage two years ago, when he sent off two players from the Serie A team. He also officiated when England failed to qualify for the European Championship after losing to Croatia and will be at the tournament this summer. Herbert Fandel will take charge as Chelsea try to overcome a 2-1 deficit against Fenerbahçe. The German officiated in the final last season.

Time is come to take tough decisions for Arsenal. They have to get rid of players like Van Persie, Song, Diaby, Rocisky, Denilson, Eboue and Gilberto. They are not up to the mark and injury prone. One team cannot affort such players for long time. They should get replacement for them and those incomming players should have enough experience to play in EPL.. This season, Arsenal made bonous and achieved its maximum. Nobody expected that they will reach in the first five and they holded the first position for quiet long time with such a small ineffective squad. They can build up on this foundation. I won't ask for a replacement for Arsene Wenger. He is doing a great job.
John, London,
win the premier ? even arsenal fans can not have faith when he picks a side at home that contains so many fringe players to play liverpool at a time that a realistic chance of the title was on, in a war this would be classed as helping the enemy
Time to raise the white flag not the premier one

Wenger has been awesome as Arsenal boss. I remember the days of George Graham where the football was awful and I reckon I'd rather have today's team with the hope of trophys. With one exception. Why does Arsene Wenger have so much faith in Nicklas Bendtner? It is obvious to every Arsenal fan that he is incapable of holding up the ball or finding a team mate with a pass. Granted he scored at the weekend but that doesn't turn him into a future star overnight.
Simon, Melbourne, Australia
Sack Wenger. Are you joking? Without the Frenchman Arsenal would still be playing at Highbury and falling further and further behind Man Utd and Chelsea. The Gunners could still win the CL - would those who advocate sacking him still want him fired then?
James Ryddel, stockport, UK
We have a game in our house -the who will he blame this week game.
and sure as eggs are eggs out he trundles every weekend with that sad crumbling face, and rolls out the litany of who else it was that made his team not win this week - the pitch (wigan) the ref(most matches) the harsh penalty decisions that only his team seem to suffer the injustice of.
Isnt it about time the world wised up and just perhaps realised that he isnt a good manager.

...so the young lad fabregas is worried that liverpool "wont play football tomorrow night" sorry cesc we do play football but more importantly we put the result first, something that you and your team mates need to realise before you will win anything.
Playing beautiful footballl that you most certainly do at times does not give you the divine right to win football matches.
Besides, over two games......us the so called team who dont play expressive football have scored two goals from OPEN PLAY......how many have you scored cesc?
Sean, Merseyside,
"...after Peter Crouch had given Liverpool the lead."
I just ran this piece through MS Word and discovered that of the 836 words that comprise this "match report", these eight are the only ones - LITERALLY the only ones - that give any acknowledgement to the fact that Liverpool FC participated in the match at the Emirates.
I appreciate that Arsenal's collapse is probably a more interesting story, and one that's more conducive to analysis, but couldn't you at least make a slight concession to even-handedness here?
Geoff, Barnsley,
I am a little tired of the apparent NUJ injuction not to ever mention the word "Arsenal" without "wonderful football" next to it, and something about his "young team". His team are third and will probably stay there. They are not actually so exceptionally young - ManU rely on two young stars in Ronaldo and Rooney, and have given a big role to Anderson this year too. Whether his team's style of play is athestically pleasing is a mute point - I thought sport was about competing and winning. Its not ice dance!
Arsenal are one dimensional - they only seem to be able to play one way. Wenger (with the press' support) tries to make this some virtuous point of principle, but top teams can vary it as required.
Nor are Arsenal quite as parsimonious as is supposed. Transfer fees are on thing, but you need top wages to keep players, and Arsenal do have a high wage bill. Everton and Portsmouth are the really impressive performers at punching above thier weight.
Nick, France,
Having read article - was arsenal only playing with themselves !!! - not much mention of Liverpool with a largely reserve team who played the wonder kids off the park in the first half and could easily of won it towards the end - still assume your match reporter only concerned with Arsen whinger
Dennis O'Brien, Merseyside,
Er, were Arsenal playing against another team on Saturday? I only ask because there seems to be absolutely no mention of their opponents in this "report".
Stan, Birmingham, UK
I am an old style Liverpool suporter, eg back as far as at the first Inter Lpool 3-1 game at Anfield, in 1965, or so. Nothing but admiration for Arsen V, except for one issue, which is ( & possibly always has been ) an inability to 'see' the other side of the coin.
The Sunday Times, in a beautiful photograph ( page 5 ) shows one Arsenal player holding Crouch ( down ? as best he can ) by the wrist, while a colleague, leans ( completely innocently ? ) on the shoulder of another.
No one from this part of the world expects , either, honesty or intergrity, particularly from the, generally, London-based 'press' ? (professionals all ? ) to pick up much which does not support their, apparent, prejudices ( of which Arsenal, no doubt because of their excellent style of play figure very highly ) The Sky professionals are particularly poor, but it a pity that Hugh McIlvanney, cannot, with time, memory & knowledge get a bit nearer the truth. Tom Byrne, Liverpool, Merseyside
To all those Arsenal fans who think that Arsene is only in a job because of his success in the transfer market- you show a shocking lack of understanding of Arsenal's situation. The fact is that the club HAVE spent an enormous amount of money recently: 300 million quid on a new stadium to be exact, Because of this investment, Arsenal have only a modest amount of money for buying players. This is why Wenger has signed so many young players- we don't have the money for 'expensive established players. This would be the situation if anyone would take over from Wenger. Now look at the current crop of young players and suggest a manager who would be able to assemble a competitive team on such a frugal buget? The answer is that their isn't anyone in world football- apart from a certain individual called Arsene Wenger
Martin, London, England
Understand the disappointment voiced by some, but the slagging Wenger is getting here is harsh. If Eduardo hadn't broken his leg Arsenal would be right up there as he is utter class when in front of goal. As a L'pool fan I've looked on with envy that Wenger could (yet again) sign someone of that ability for relatively little. He can do that partly because clubs do not expect huge payouts when Arsenal come calling. V.Persie when fit is also superb, and losing him virtually all season has been a massive loss. Would Man United be anywhere near where they are, excellent squad notwithstanding, if Ronaldo were injured? And Liverpool without Torres and Gerrard? Of the big clubs only Chelsea (would) have done well without their principal goal scorer as they tend to share goals around more. And don't forget luck. As a L'pool fan - blatant penalty missed in the 1st leg CL QF. Wouldn't have rated our chances at 2-1. Another probable penalty missed in the PL this w/e. down. Give Wenger a break!
disso, London,
If Wenger buys the 3 or 4 quality players in the summer that the squad needs then next season could realistically be Arsenals year for winning big. It is fair to say many of the young first team squad players will be stronger next season, however even without injury problems Arsenal need extra quality and strength in depth that is clearly now lacking in the team overall. Let's hope he gets the formula right because if he doesn't, next season could sadly be his last.
Mike, Romford, Essex
I have had many a dicussion about our weaknesses. I really think 2 true wingers who STAY out wide would help the team. We always become too predictable in tight games and choose to use the central route. Theo, Eboue, Diaby and Hleb are not wingers and will always choose to come inside. it would bring a much needed other element to the play.
Oliver Trenchard, Lo,
play Bendtner on the right?
are you insane?
Matt, Slough,
Wenger has done a great job at Arsenal, but he must acknowledge that a squad with two or three more purchases would have benifitted the team during the run in. He could certainly have used Diarra, but then who wants to keep hold of a player that is unhappy. The like of Diaby, Bendtner, Walcott and Hoyte are not yet ready to mix it with the big boys.
We must also acknowledge that Wenger has been given funds, but prefers not to spend massive amounts on transfers, rather selecting players with potential not established stars. However, two recent signings have been excellent this season, Sagna and Eduardo; nevertheless the squad is still too small for a full assualt on the Premiership and Champions League.
Next year, I expect Wenger to purchase more defensive cover, but also more firepower and probably a winger to help give the side some much needed width.
D Dobbs, LONDON, UK
Arsenal ran out of steam. You don't play at that enthrailing pace through the whole season without a big squad. Arsene Wenger is truly a great manager but blind allegiance to half baked players like Bendtner is killing Arsenal's pursuit of the Premiership title. It took the manager a long time to realise the limitations of players like Aladiarre some few years back.
Football is an entertaining industry not a business concern like banks, that's the reason why 60,000 men and women leave their families and work to make the pilgrimage to Emirates Staduim and buy hotdogs for £5. Football is not subjecting Arsenal supporters to ridicule by watching the likes of Bendtner waste valuable opportunities in front of goal and get our bloood pressure on the rise.
I pray the day does not come when Arsene Wenger gets the boo factor from the crowd. He has four options of getting a silverware and good gracious Emirates is still waiting for its first domestic cup.
Babatunde George, London, UK
For the record it would be the 3rd season without a trophy if nothing comes of this season.
Denilson, Song and Djourou have been injured or out of form since January.
Baptista, Reyes and Aliadiere were all lampooned by Arsenal fans before their departure so why raise them up as being great squad players now? Eduardo, Bendtner and Diarra were brought in during the summer and they were good replacements. It was unfortunate that Diarra left in January but it was a good idea to get rid of a bad influence in the dressing room.
Regarding the issue of looking long term and short term profits. AW and the board are clearly looking long term; just look at the youth team set up and the fact that the manager is a key figure in that area. Additionally look at the fact that the manager also is reluctant to spend with young players coming through!
Nicky Wan, London,
Should the team fail to win a trophy this year, wenger should not look very far for who to blame! He has the players and yet fear and fear alone has made him make refuse to rotate his players. Players that started for him last season have been kept on the sidelines even when the evidences shows that the squad needs some fresh legs. He is the only top manager that believes you can only substitute players after the 70th minute. And then when he makes the sustitute he takes off the wrong man, sometimes I wonder if we are watching the same match. For Tuesday's' game sir, please play Hleb as a striker put Bentdner on the right and Walcott on the left pleeese!! Please rest Toure and use Sanderos. Please use Eboue in defense, remember he used to play in that position before? replace the Keeper please i beg u. Its time to go back to the simple basics. So, Keeper L. Defense C, S, G, E. Mid. W, F, F, B. Strikers H, & A. THANK YOU!!!
Chenege, Silver spring , USA
Who did Arsenal play again? I'm not quite sure it's mentioned in this report and who scored???
max, london,
This year Wenger has shown that he is affraid to take chances on players that he once believed in. Why keep Alumunia on goal? Last years Curling cup run should have taught him that the younger guys surely with more heart than the "A" team full of guys with tired legs. What is up with playing people in positions that they normally don't play when you have players that fit right up in that place? We have the players we need its just a shame that the coach has managed the team wrong especially during matches. Wenger please rotate the players and please make the substitutes before its too late. Trust me, its okay to make a change before the 70th minute.
Chenege, Silver spring , USA
I totally agree. As an Arsenal fan I consider Wenger to have failed the fans this year. He did not adequately replace Henry. Whats more is that although Baptista, Reyes and Aliadiere left, replacements were not sought to bolster the squad.
The squad is simply not large enough and lacks the quality of our major rivals ie. Chelsea and United.
Wenger only has his job today due to the success he has had with making a profit on the transfer market. Otherwise, the board would have sacked him long ago. The board seems only concerned about short term profits rather than continual investment in strengthening its squad.
Its not Wenger's job to make a profit on the transfer market. Its his job to win trophies. He has not succeeded. Had he been at Chelsea, United or Liverpool he would without a doubt be sacked by now.
Hopefully he can make some educated acquisitions this summer to bolster the squad and possibly try and win some silverware this season, although it looks bleak.
Jayden, London,
It seems riduculous that wenger weakened the squad by letting Diarra go, a ready made replacement for Flamini or Cesc. Also if what are Denilson. Diaby,Song, Djourou and SIlva doing in the squad if they are not able to step in and provide cover for central midfield. How can they gain experience if he does not play them especially if players need a rest. Also the arsenal medical team needs to be looked as there always players out for 2/3 weeks as well as the long term injuries. Wenger sort it out 4 years without a trophy is unaceptable for a top european team. Goodwill can only be exploited for so long especially with the prices arsenal charge to watch the team
